When putting the tranmission in gear it just wont budge into gear. do I need to change anythign on teh tranny? What should i do? I adjusted the cable and nothing. . How many quarts of tranny fulid does teh tranny need to have for it to be able to shift . The tranny was completely drained and now have put 2 wuarts in the converter and 6 quarts in the dipstick. i know you said you adjusted the cable, but did you mean the TV cable or shifter cable? i would have guessed, (if it is a column shift car), the linkages are binding.

Unhook your shifter cables. Does it go into gear by just moving the lever on the transmission? If it does, does it do anything? A torque converter holds more than two quarts. With it being completely empty I would guess around 9-10 qts.(for the whole trans)  So if it is going into gear, and not doing anything, check the fluid level and add if necessary.  Don't overfill. Good luck.

When I installed mine,Mine wouldn't shift either (I had enough fluid),and I pulled the valvebody, cleaned every valve in it one at a time,re-installed,worked like new.Took a couple f hours and I had to keep everything near sterile, but worth it.

Yup, with a stock converter figure at least 11qts, and probably closer to 12...

The dip stick can fool you when your filling a a tranny... Because there is fluid "hanging" on the inside of the dip tube, often they'll appear to be over full(as in halfway up the stick), when in reality it still may need 2 or 3 more quarts...

block the wheels and set the Ebrake then start er up.

put it in drive.

add fluid and listen to the engine, when its R's start to drop then you know your doing something.  stop adding fluid and put it in reverse and check fluid again.

It takes a while to get the pumps primed and fluid circulating in all the various directions/voids.

hope you didnt decide to use the "used mustang" converter , it might be jacked up.
