Question: which would u do?

i just bought another fox! a bird this time. 1988 ford thunderbird sport. only 68,xxx miles on it. the body is nice, no rust that i saw, paint only really had one spot that should buff out, and no dents. needs front tires and allignment, the headlights arent the clearest either. its not as well optioned as the cougar, and its blue with blue cloth and it has snowflakes on it. no major flaws, pass side window doesnt go down(i think its the regulator, i can hear the motor run), the oil, fuel, and temp gauges work but 'cant be trusted' according to the previous owner. the worst part is i heard a slight lifter knock, nothing major, hopefully i can run some trans fluid through the oil and change it with a little thicker grade and that knock will clear up. all in all im very happy with it. im gonna pick it up on wedsnday so ill be sure to have lots and lots of pictures up then.

heres my biggest question, its just a matter of opinion if u were in my shoes. if u had a 88 xr-7 (more info in sig if u can read it) that has 200,xxx miles on it, both fenders dented and an inner fender/(subframe?) crumpled pretty good, but still plenty of life left in her(driven everyday, plenty of power and shows no signs of breaking) and a bird matching the discription above. which would u drive everyday, and which would u fix up and make into a lil hotrod? im partial to having a badass cat...but im curious as to everyone elses opinions cus im pretty much torn 50-50

I'd say use the Cat as the DD since it already has dents and dings.  If you use the Tbird as a DD, theres a chance of it getting damage too.  Sounds like the Tbird's engine could use a going-through anyway.  I vote Cat as DD and Tbird as project.

um yeah, what they said.  Lifters "tick", bearings "Knock"  Either one is un-desirable.  TRUST ME. ;)

yu. trust me! rod bearings suck and lifters do too. [end sarcasm]

the window deal sounds like the problem I just fixed on my cat. The gear stripped a couple teeth... changed it and re-greased the tracks and it works fine.

wow, i dint realize it was gonna be so one-sided. i kno it isnt a good thing by any means, but its not a loud tap at all, i isnt even noticble when the hoods down, my father whos been a mechanic for 25 years now said that it can probably be fixed with a good flush and thicker oil because we've caught it in such an early stage.

and to clarify, the damage to the cougar's inner fender is all before the strut towers, alignment angles, motor mounts, and any other major things were not affected, i forgot to say that in the first post.

Screw you guys. Fix the tick. Then drive it and fix the Cougar, if it has damage in the subframe tear it down fix it and mod that .

that was sorta my dream, but i dont know how fixable the subframe is, i should probably take it to a body shop and see what they have to say. it seems like everybody fix's up mustangs...but it kinda seems everyone picked the same car to be different with, the t-birds. hotrod cougars seems more scarce, especially in my parts of town.

I was never aware that either birds or cats had a leg up as far as popularity.  Around here, I see an equal number of each (very few), but mine is the only actually modded one.  Every time a cet vs bird topic comes up, all I see is a few of the cat guys whining about Tbirds being popular.  WHAT!?

And it's not about which one is more uncommon or whatever, it should simply be the right choice.  The Tbird is the better candidate.  Why damage a perfectly good car?

Sweet, congrats on the purchase. I saw that bird online somewhere. I would have loved to pick it up for myself as it is a very nice car.

Drive the Cougar daily and preserve the bird. Since the Cougar already has battle scars from daily driving, it's silly to take that chance of destroying a perfectly good Bird.

in the name of practicality, fix the bird and drive the cat, only because of the imperfections in it already. it would suck to put dings and such on the bird as well and have 2 dented-up cars instead of just 1. just get a dd beater later on and fix the cat at a later time. ;)

correct, this tbird was on ebay, thats how i found out about it. i didnt bother with the actual bidding, i just asked the guy for his phone number and did everything directly with him. the thing is...the bidding started off at 1,000 and no one bidded on it till the last hour where only 1 person put out a bid(and they bidded exactly $1000). for a car this clean with that low of mile, i couldnt belive pretty much no one bid on it. thier loss is my gain. the tapping stopped, i just think it had to be driven, it was sitting for a while. i think i am gonna make the bird my project tho, its nice tostart with so its really gonna be nice when its done! i wanna drive it around so bad, but with my luck, itll wind up looking like the cat and i wouldnt ever forgive myself.

DUDE fix the Cat. That Bird is fine. If anything throw any left over parts off of the Coug onto the Bird. The Cat need attention!!! That bird needs no work done to it. And that subframe needs attention. I dont think you want to drive a vehicle with damage like that. Perfect reason to fix it, and it needs paint, plus its BADASS!!!!! Cougars FTMFW!!

all damage is before the shock towers, it did not affect ride quality, steering geometry, braking, nothing was different...sitting inside it, you'd never know it washiznit untill u got out the car and walked around and looked at it.

i washed it today, it looks even better now. i swear that bird looks almost brand new... almost. might post a pic or two more tomorrow. and i think im gonna make that my project car, its alot nicer then the cougar and if i hop up the engine, i'll have a pretty nice cruise night/lad-ie-da car. still undecided, but thats how im leaning right now.

I got an idea! Throw all of your mod stuff onto the Bird, and completely restore the Coug. That way you have your nice modded bird to drive, and then you can have a KICKASS Cougar!

Hey Keith forgot to mention something about tags.

If you can wait until January to tag the Bird, you can get historic plates. (20 years old and a discontinued model)
This means $51 to register every two years and no emissions.

I'll probably get mine the first week of January and I am counting down the days as we speak, er type.

But why make the Tbird a DD and get it dented up?  Then it WILL need work, and that's work that could be avoided.  Hell, the body on it looks even better than mine.  For practicality, fix the Tbird up.  I wouldn't risk having it damaged.

That sounds like a very good plan.  That Tbird is a perfect cruise-in car, and doesnt need body work!

yeah thats what im thinking. if i fix up the bird the drivetrain, brakes and suspension are the ONLY things i need to modify. whereas the cougar would need, drivetrain, brakes, suspension, bodywork, paint, interior, and so on. i mean, this isnt a really tight budget project, but i really dont have money just to throw around like that.

now i just need to figure out what excactly im gonna do, how mild or how wild its gonna be. i dont think im gonna get too crazy with it tho.

and 3 more after a good wash...

and if someone knows what color this is, i'd be very appritiative.
