Title: Exhaust droooooooooooooooooooooooone!
Post by: GrannysBird on August 22, 2007, 06:39:12 PM
Ok guys I'm currently running 2.5 inch pipe with cats and mac prochambers and the drone at 40mph and 55-67mph is excrucitating! what I'm wondering is what kind of setup I need to run in order to eliminate drone.

Do I either need to buck up and buy a bunch of sound deadening or do you know of any type of ler that has little to no drone.

First did you remove your sound deadener? Second what lers are you running? I ran my without a ler just cats, and it droned, but not as bad as I thought. I have a magnaflow on and it quieted the car so much, but its really really deep. Everyone seems to put Flowmaster on 5.0s, and personally these Magnaflows are awesome and distinct. Just depends on what specific sound you want, and what your are going to run as far as the whole system goes.

Exhaust from front to back:

Bkk shorty headers into a mac h-pipe with cats then into mac prochambers which exit through tailpipes that extend past the bumper.

I wonder if wrapping the lers and h pipe in thick header wrap would help?

A MAC prochamber is just Mac's version of the "H-Pipe". With a little chamber replacing the crossover pipe. If you are only running that then you need some lers yo.

Maybe a nonchambered straight thru ler?

Flowtech Afterburners aren't bad (that's what I use).

this might sound silly, but try putting some higher(numerically) gears in the rear. "droning" usually occurs at a low rpm(1200-1800).

this would work, too. my truck had a glasspack on it, when i bought it, and it was quieter at cruising rpms, than the flowmaster i replaced it with.

So I called Flowtech and asked about the afterburner ler they claim that it has almost 0 resonance and have a moneyback guarantee if i don't like it. So Exactly how quiet is it at cruising speeds Thunderjet?

The whole point of the thread is to find a way to eliminate the drone. If I wanted to permanently damage my hearing I would not even address the problem and do just that. Oddly enough though I like my hearing and not having a ring in my ear.

At crusing with the windows down I hear more wind noise than exhaust noise. They do rumble at idle and WOT though. I do have a catless 2.5" H-pipe which is connected to 2.25" lers and tails which probably quiets it a bit. Next year when I replace it with 2.5" lers and tails it will probably be a bit louder. Your cam will also affect how it sounds. I have a rumpy cam so the exhaust sounds rumpy.

WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!

I have a set of Flowmaster 40s if you are interested. Not sure if they are the supers or not they are kinda short and I can only see where one baffle is welded in the ler. I also have a set of Dyno Max turbos but they are 2.25 lers.
