Would the vent/wing window assembly from an 85-86 Cougar fit and 83-84 Thunderbird Vent Window Door?
Is it even possible to remove the assembly from the door?
I ask because the drivers side vent window on the doors i picked up at the yard had an attempted break-in, And they actually managed to break the weld loose on the little tab/hinge at the upper part of the vent frame.
Instead of trying to weld it back, I would much rather try and replace it with one off an '85 cougar that's currently at the yard.
Yep, they're the same assemblies. The vent window can be removed and put into another door.
Awesome! Thanks.
Need to get back to the yard before someone wrecks em' They already broke the main door windows. :-/
Any idea how they come out? I assume by the lower bolt/tensioner?.
The vent window assembly has 2 or 3 bolts in the bottom...remove those. And I think that's it. I'm not the best reference for vent windows since mine are in a convertible with a chopped door frame. ;) I'll check the manual when I get home.
Eric,
Is it possible to swap all of the door glass and vent window parts into a door that was originally a non-vent window door?
I'm curious about the vertical post between the glass and the vent window, and how it's affixed to the top of the frame.
Yeah, you can. Obviously you'd need all the parts for it (vent window, door glass, weatherstripping) but I'm pretty sure all the holes needed to do that conversion are in a standard door. Should just be a swap-out deal.
Anytime a vent window assembly is removed from a door and replaced, there is a very technical procedure to follow that ensures proper alignment. There's a hole in the top of the vent window frame, and a corresponding hole in the door. You need to stick a sharp, pointed object like an awl through both. Then bolt up the bottom. Yeah, super techincal, eh. ;)
That's actually an area where I'm screwed, because that part of the door doesn't exist anymore on the convertible. So me must make other arrangements. ;)
Ok, i've got the drivers door apart.
Got the 2 bottom bolts out and gotta wrestle the tensioner bolt inside the door off.
Does the whole frame come out for the vent window? Or is that part of the entire window frame?
I'm having a hard time getting the stuff out of the door...
I did notice the upper hinge thats got the broken weld to the vent has a small bold inside the door area... Just can really reach it.
If i cant get the hinge and vent window out that would be great, Cuz thats all i need to replace.
This prolly sounds confusing, Ill get a pic or 2.
**Basicly i just need to know how to get to these 2 bolts:

Ok, i got the whole thing out. :hick:
There were the 2 bolts at the bottom, And a philips screw at the top near the full window. (Remove the weather stripping junk to see and get at it)
If you just want to get out the vent:
Just remove the bolt thats on the inside of the door under the vent window (Mentioned in other thread for tightning) and pry the frame out enough at the top to get a tiny wrench in and remove the 2 bolts holding down the upper hinge.

Yeah, all that comes out. Would you believe back in the day those were just a $75.00 ea. option ?
Boo the original owner should have shelled that out for mine, So i wouldn't have to go through to work of changing them out. :hick:
I payed $40 for both doors in full though (Minus Mirrors), So i guess its not all bad.
You did good.
As promised, the instructions for removal/replacement:

Awesome, Thanks Eric.
These doors arent installed yet on my car, So i used a cordless drill battery to raise and lower the power windows. :hick:
Where is that on the door? What part is that mounted on? I think one of mine is rusted.
Its attached to the outer dew wiper? assembly.
It's part of the whole lower chrome trim piece of the window.
I'll get you some pics soon, I'm heading out to dinner right now.

Let me know if you need a pic of it on the door or something.
Went out to the yard and picked up a replacement Vent assembly off an 85 Cougar. :hick:
And the slider thing was a bit rusted on the dew wiper as well, Not as bad as above though.
