The rarest of the rare! If we were to break it all down what would be the rarest T-bird and rarest Cougar 83-88. You know the Holy Grail of these cars? Does anyone know?

Left-the-factory rare? or Left-the-dealer rare?

Dark Sage Green, 85-86 (though, might have been a 83-84), tan interior with wing windows. I saw one once. TC, V8, or V6, it was cool!!!

If I had to guess, maybe a Mach 1 Red/Red leather moonroof 88 TC. Or maybe an 83 TC loaded (I've seen a few 0-option ones). Or maybe a 84 1/2 XR7 turbo. Who knows?

So no one knows or there isn't any proof either way. I would think the older the bird/cougar the lower production would mean they are rarest Also I would think the Holy Grail would be the rarest from the factory. Those dealer options would have there own class I would think.

Factory-wise, it would come down to options and colors.
Options: completely, fully loaded (for 1983-86, that's uncommon) or completely stripped (again, very uncommon for a luxury-oriented car). Bonus points for 1983-84 cars with factory 8-track decks. Any 1983's with the Opalescent interior option are uncommon. Option-delete cars (radio, a/c, rear defroster) would be novel.
Colors: Motormenace got it...a full Dark Sage 1985 is very uncommon, the Light Sage Metallic also. 1986 Wine is not seen often by itself; usually it's in a two-tone with Taupe Metallic. Any of the 1983-86 light blue colors are becoming scarce. Some later colors are uncommon (1988 Rose Quartz, 1987 two-tone blue).
Non-factory: Hrrmmm....well, hate to say it but since very few were tweaked outside the factory, we'd be looking at the Bill Elliott converted HO 5.0 T-Birds, the Tiffany Cougars (let the flames begin LOL) and of course the convertible Cougars. Unsure of any convertible T-Birds...I've always heard rumors about them but have yet to find any proof of existence.

Eric, funny you shoud say that about a convertable bird. My GF is in Outerbanks, NC right now, and she said she saw one. Last time I talked to her, she said she had a picture of it on her camara phone. I'll see if it's real or not, then post up
As for rare I'd go with the uber loaded 83 TC
On a side note, would the Fila's be in a dealer option or a seperate group like TC's? I've learned not to call them rare, more uncommon

There were just over 5,000 20th Anniversary cars built in 1987. Fairly low number for a production car in the 80's but I wouldn't consider them real rare. I wouldn't be surprised if there were less FILA's built per model year than 20th Anny's

I'm talking like, confirmed from a legitimate coach builder or conversion company. I don't know what's up with that red one....homemade? Hard to tell. I have real literature for some of the Cougar convertibles but have never found anything on the T-Birds. I'm sure they exist but finding solid information on one has been frustrating.

The PPG car would be just as legitimate as the convertibles, Elliott cars, or Bondurant Birds. It was sponsored by Ford, and the modifications were done before "delivery". There was only one. And it still exists:

Two different cars :D That 'Vert pic (note the lack of wing windows) was taken off Coolcats a few years ago, so Eric knows more about it than I do. I think it may have been made by the same company that made the 83-88 convertibles, and was actually considered for production.
The '89 wing-window (hard top) Bird I'm referring to was specially built for Bill Ford JR, and was the only MN12 ever released by Ford that had 'em. Apparently wing windows were considered for production so some concept doors and glass were made, but the idea got nixed. Billy Ford, who signed the paychecks at Ford back then, liked 'em, so they saved a set of the doors and put them on his car. He also had a custom interior, including a steering wheel with the initials BF instead of the SC that would have been in an SC wheel (the car was a base V6 Bird, though). The car sold on eBay within the past year, and IIRC, it went dirt cheap.

Here's the cool thing about the PPG car, Mike - it started out as a four-eye. It's based on an '84 Bird. You can clearly see that Ford used some ideas from that car for the 87-88, though (most notably, flush glass)

Sucks that our cars arn't thought of as a " buy um now before it's too late" car. People really don't take them into consideration when looking for a car or hearing the price of one when your selling it. So I guess a T-bird/ Cougar that is super clean is rare enough. I do believe that there were only 7 of the SWB MN12's If you need better info go over to http://forums.tccoa.com/index.php.
Also I guess what I would really like to know is there a Bird/Cougar out there that is so rare that if some one modded it they would be given a serious flamming! I know a Turbo coupe right! Yes I'm one of them guys. But is there such a thing a so rare that it is looked down upon doing anything other than factory? I know in other makes/models and such there always seems to be that one that is rare enough to make everyone respect most it in factory style, not some modded up one of a kind prototype car. Not dealer mods just plain ole from the factory!

From what I know there were about 5 NYAS 20ths. There is NY SHOW stamped on the radiator core tag for those cars. Aside from the gold-rimmed logo and grille and that tag, I know of no other differences vs. a standard 20th.
Quote
what about the short wheel base MN12's?
From the information that I have, there were 5. They were started by a company in Missouri. Plans were to make many copies but in the end only 5 were completed. Four of them went to sale to the public, with the owner retaining one. One of the public ones got wrecked autocrossing several years back. That leaves 3 public SWB Thunderbirds that exist...and 2 of them are in Cleveland, OH. those Ohio cars, right? ;)
The black 1990-ish Cougar XR7 that was at CJ07...the woman that arrived at the park late, with two kids...Connie, I believe is her name...her husband has one of the SWB SC's. I've seen it in real life; it's a bright blue coloUr. I was prodding him to bring it to CJ but he kind of brushed me off. Later I found out that he didn't want to admit it, but he did a number on the motor and yanked it without having a replacement engine ready. So that's why it wasn't at CJ. Maybe next year...
Anyway, the SWB's look kinda funky but they are cool in their own way. I understand the handling is much better vs. a standard MN12 wheelbase...and that's saying something, considering they already handle very well for such hefty cars. Normally I would cringe knowing that a car was cut completely in half, a section removed, and then welded back together. But I'm assured that all the welding was top notch and there are no ill effects from the surgery. It's a novel car, that's for sure.

I'm sorry. I musta read the original post wrong. I thought this was about what is the rarest of the rare. Not the best looking/ best optioned/ personal favorite. Evidently there are a few one offs from the factory or special officially licenced post-production conversions. In any event, one of a kind is as rare as it gets. Any less would be non-existant, any more would be less rare. Doesn't matter what personal tastes you have, one-of-a-kind is just that.

Brent: VERY nice! Any info on that?
Zonda: I don't recall if there were whitewalls or not. Whatever was factory (which I think was blackwalls), it still had the factory tires. The car has been on and off trailers its whole life, just to and from shows and whatnot. The original owner said he drove it around the block once a year, never more than that, just to get it warmed up and "keep the seals in good shape". I don't know whatever happened to the car...the original owner was, at one point, on Team Mustang within Ford. I last spoke with him in 1999. The car was at an all-Ford swap meet for sale in the mid-1990's; that's where I saw it in person. Far as I know it never sold. It was unique, that's for sure. Taste...that's another thing altogether. ;)

He stopped by the NATO site a few years ago looking for info on his car because of the stamping on the tag. Here is a link to his site with some more information on his car.

I'm going to say the 20th's.. Super cool cars, one year only and way more than a flashy red paint job.
The '83 Heritage is a one model year car also, with some of the more desirable options, keyless entry, vent windows, and factory alarm just to name a few.
