Title: Converting my v8 5.0L 302 into a HO
Post by: Crusher on August 13, 2007, 07:04:28 AM
Hey Guys,

I would like to know on what I would need to switch my engine from a stock to a HO.  I'm also looking to see the price of it because I need to know how much I gotta save.  I would be also switching it from Automatic to a T-5 manual, and this is for a Mercury Cougar LS 1986

Look through the rest of Eric's site, answers a lot of FAQ's.

Like $500-$600 worth of parts depending on what you can find. I found a set of E7 heads for $50. But that doesnt include exhaust stuff and other odds and ends you may find you need. I spent much more than I thought I would because Ive never torn down an engine. All the gasketry adds some, new timing chain, this and that.

I might have spent upwards of $800 total, but it was soooooo worht it.

I'll bet all of the parts needed could be had for $350.00 or less if you shop around a lot and be patient. You can pull the heads from any 5.0 fuel injected Ford pickup. They have the E-7 heads, plus, for some reason,I've seen the "pickup" heads sell cheaper than the exact same "Mustang" heads.Stock H.O cams are wicked cheap, factory headers (which work just fine, even with minor engine mods) can be had for cheap,Mustang H.O intakes are also cheap.I've seen the upper and lower go for $30.00,sometimes less.Computers are from a Speed density Stang or Mark VII.I have one of each.Start gathering parts one at a time as cheap as possible until you have everything you need, then assemble the engine.

LOL WOW u r a very interesting one eh Vinnie? LOL LOL LOL Whitewalls is what the car original came with, why remove the classic look it was intended for?  Tsk tsk tsk.  Also thanks for the information.

I found:
E7 heads, the 60mm throttle body, HO upper and lower plenums, the HO valvecovers, 19lb/hr fuel injectors, Mark VII computer

all for 250 bucks, so I guess I just need the cam and Im doing a HO converstion to my baby.

Also if anyone can help me I need a full center consule for my cougar, its a 1986 cougar ls, even if it isn't my blue I can die it I was told because I Need to install a automatic floor shifter for temp till I find a good T-5...  I guess I would be also looking for the floor shifter and cables...

The 20th anniversary Cougar I saw yeas ago had blackwalls on the turbine wheels. Not to say that whitewalls are "wrong",they'rejust friggin' ugly, and those are also real skinny. No offense Zonda. My car will have a few comments made as well when it's finished.

As far as the stock H.O cam, check the Corral forums.I've seen them for $10.00 and $15.00.CHEEEEEAP.IF I decide to use my E cam,I'll have an H.O cam for someone.

Yeah, HO cams do come a dime a dozen...two reasons I don't want to sell him mine...#1 I believe it to be bent, #2 when the crank snapped it f'ed the timing cover all up and the effort to try and remove it isn't worth it.

Yeah man if you shop on ebay for a little while, you can get all the parts for $300.  I got the E7s for $50 + $50 shipping, the intake for $0.99, the cam for $10, the TB for 0.99 (guy threw in a free K&N filter too), the injectors for $20, etc etc.  You can read through my thread for pics and info.
