Here's what I got: SO block (dished but not reliefed pistons), HO cam. E6 heads, Comp cam 1.7 fully adjustable roller rockers. Changing block is not an option right now with the work area I have.
Question??? What aftermarket heads could I use with SO pistons, HO cam and 1.7 pedestal rockers?
Does anyone have comments on the Edelbrock performer 5.0 (1.90 intake valve) as a viable option?
What about the AFR 165, could these be used for this application?
I was thinking of self porting a set of E6's. Is this worth while? Pros - cons?
I already have a set of E7's on the work bench. How about porting these for my set up? Could they handle 1.7's, HO cam and SO pistons?
Keep in mind funds are tight, separated (car/motorcycle widow...LOL) and divorce imminent.... Whatever I do has got to be an affordable choice for what is a street driven garage toy usually taken for cruise nights and show n' shines. Thanks

Unless you just can't afford a aftermarket set, I consider messing with any stock head just "' in the wind"... Sure you can port the Hell out of them(they'll probably crack) and install larger valves, but you still have a heavy iron head... If you're on a tight budget, aftermarket iron heads or GT 40s are a far better choice, but you'll really need valve relifs in the pistons...
That said...
Trick Flows are the only aftermarket head that will likely have enough valve clearance... I've been running a set on a '86 HO shortblock(no dish, no reliefs)since '99... Plus I've had them cut .010 to true up the surfaces, after I blew a HG spraying... I also have the Stage1 TF cam with .499/.510 lift @.050 and 221*/224* duration(1.6 rockers)... This is not a combo to run on SD, Mass Air will be mandatory... Guessing a stock cam should work with 1.7s on the SD...
From your responses, I gather that porting my E7's would work with my HO cam, SO pistons and 1.7 roller rockers. Right?
TFS twisted wedge heads do sound tempting, but would the Edelbrock Performer 5.0 1.9 intake heads work with 1.7 rockers etc? It would take me longer to get the cash for theses though.
I have the mass air stuff to put on when needed. So SD problems aren't a concern.

You can get an ISKY tool to do the valve reliefs while the engine is in the car.You have to be wicked careful,and it takes quite a while.You have to pull the head and re-install it to do every valve.That's 16 times.
TW heads have the valves rotated slightly away from the piston(more toward the ports)... They even advertise, unless you use a huge cam valve reliefs are not needed(and exactly why I bought mine)... I dare say NO other aftermarket head is going to work with flattops...

You could port your e7's and they MIGHT work with 1.7's but I'm unsure of the exact v/p clearance you would have. In addition, even with a port job, out of the box tfs' will out flow the ported e7's any day. Plus, with the tfs twisted wedge, adequate valve piston clearance is easier to come by with higher than stock valve lifts.
I'm all for low budget builds and making stock parts go fast, but there is only so much even a professional porter could do with e7's.

I hear ya's. Porting the E7's could be touch n' go with the 1.7 rockers, That's why I even considered doing the E6's.
I've long thought that forking out the bucks for TF twisted wedges was the way to go; but from all the reading I've done, I started to get concerned that the 2.02 size valves may be a little big and might cut the lower rpm HP and torque that's needed with an AOD stock tranny. Nice to have high HP but if it only comes on after the tranny upshifts then "OH WELL!". What are your thoughts on this? Valid concerns or would I get "seat of the pants" type burn outs anyhow?
ISKY tool? Yikes! on the head install & removal for each valve, I'm sure I wouldn't be the first one cutting corners by the 7th valve. Is it doable by your typical half-ass shade tree mech?
PS: I also have an Explorer intake to put on when I change heads.
Worry more about port volume than your valve size. The smaller intake runner promotes velocity, which promotes torque. The valve size makes a difference in torque, but the role that velocity plays is greater than the valve size.
I would also say, go with the twisted wedge heads. Theyve proven themselves many times, and will work with your pistons.
I would LOVE Twisted Wedge heads,but for now,NOT in the budget.After buying everything I've bought in the last 2 months,my budget is wicked small.I'll probably end just selling the cam and stashing the money away for other projects.

I dare say a little less even. The 2 fully assembled heads felt slightly lighter than one of the iron E7's I pulled off 2 winters ago....

You could do some simple porting to the e7's. Labor is "free" if you do it yourself. That explorer intake probably didn't kill bottom end much over stock. If it did it may have made up for it in the midrange.
The e303 would probably do the same. It would probably work great with that explorer and pypes exhaust system. Your set up. The only way I may not try that FREE cam is if I stayed speed density. It can't hurt to try it 1st. Then you know for certain to keep it or sell it.

Just looked at the Summit site. The TFS Twisted Wedge heads shown are for stud mount rockers. I already have a set of pedestal rockers. Are Twisted Wedge available for pedestal rockers? What do you suggest otherwise?
No they are not available in pedestal. Thumper heads are a good option: http://www.thumperoforangepark.com/ They have a head/cam combo that includes a double roller timing chain with 9 position keyway far cam advance/retard for $995.
I may just install the E cam and see what happens.I'll be installing timing gears anyway,so that's the time to try it.I just did the Mass Air mod yo my extra computer harness.All I have to do is install it.

That thumper website sure was interesting. Getting back to E6's deeper valve setting allowing greater valve lift (1.7 rockers), with SO pistons, has anyone tried to port E6's for as good or better flow than stock E7s?
