Title: what exhaust do you run?
Post by: turboranger91 on August 06, 2007, 10:12:56 PM
my car came with dual 40 series flowmasters out to two magnaflow stainless tips.  i like the tips, but those flowmasters are KILLING my performance.

what kind of power do you think i'll pick up when i take those off?

what's everyone else got for exhaust?

on the tbird I am running true duals, with stock stang headers/h-pipe, into 2.25" Cherry Bomb glasspaks, into tails.

On the XR-7: stock up to the lers, then it is dual Summit race lers and turn downs.  Basically a cheap flowmaster knock off.

well, i guess it was more geared to the turbocoupes, but i know 302's also, so i guess it doesn't matter.

I ran a Full 3-inch Stinger exhaust with a Magnaflow ler in my 87TC. Sounded pretty sweet.

I've heard Flowmaster lers don't work well on the turbo 2.3 cars.
My turbo '86 still wears its stock exhaust with some leaks past the cat.
My '96 4.6 has the Dynomax mandrel-bent cat-back kit. I love the way it sounds, actually. Very smooth and mellow.

you heard right.  a chambered ler (not to mention TWO of them) will not work well on a turbo car.  you want the exhaust as free flowing as possible.

3" ATR stainless

Stock Mark VII (Mustang) shorty headers.
2¼" mandrel bent exhaust without a crossover (no H or X) to glasspacks and out the sides in front of the rear tires.

Might be a bit unrefined sounding, but I would think a glasspack or two would be ideal for a turbo car.

Mac 1 3/4" full length headers, Mac pro-chamber, flowmaster 40's, down to y 2" crimped tail-pipes(wasn't my doing).  Too much header, not enough tail pipe.

My parts TC had a pair of Magnaflows, a 3" DP with no cat, a 2.25" Y-pipe and stock cheapy replacement 2" crimp-bend tail pipes. I only drove it a few times before killing it, but it seemed to work pretty good. Of course I didn't have anything to compare it to except my stock 5.0 'Bird which has stock manifolds, 2.25" custom duals with no cats, and a pair of Flowtech Terminators.

The '83 has a full 3" system from the turbo back.  I'm using a DynoMax straight through ler (round case) and a 3" Stinger tail pipe.  I need a bit of stainless for the tip to finish it.

I haven't run at more than idle and no-load revs though as I put it on while fighting with the cracked head/oil issue.  Fairly quiet and deep toned though.

im running a 3in down pipe, 3in cat, after the cat its 2.5in, then splits to 2.25 to the lers then 2in out the ler and over the rear to 2.25 mustang stainless tips. not exactly performance oriented , but works well the 3in downpipe really woke the car up.

BTW its all crush bent by me for next to nothing, so its works and will stay that way for a long time

I bet those sound lovely inside the car.

I had mine like that for about 2 days while I was working on the tailpipes and I would NEVER actually run them like that without some sort of turnout.

Anyway I have a stinger's "prototype" (as in the first one he ever made) 3" to dual 2 1/2" exhaust on my car (with a few tweaks). 2 1/2" Hooker Maximum Flow lers, 2 1/2" Flowmaster tailpipes and some nice little stainless tips.

I've had this system for about 3+ years now and I still love the way it sounds.

*Runs and hides*

Stock 2.5" downpipe, no cat, off-the-shelf quietest he could find turbo ler and a downturn before the axle.

I REALLY need a new exhaust!

I haven't yet. I will but I'm debating turndowns ( like a 45* maybe) or have some tubing bent and have a side exhaust. All the way to about 4" in from of the rear wheel. Kinda like an AAR cuda. That placement. Just keep then black so they match the underside of the car and the lower black trim. I have the hangers just haven't put them on yet

I was gonna point that out - they look like they're dumping directly onto the diff housing:hick:

*EDIT* Actually, after looking at it again it looks like they're the wrong lers anyway - they look like "center inlet" lers. They're actually touching each other...

BBK 1 5/8" shorty headers, BBK catalytic H-pipe, Flowmaster 2 chamber 40 series, 2 1/2" throughout to tips, sounds great and I love it. :D

At the moment. Stock manifolds, cats, Y pipe, cut at stock ler with a Magnaflow hanging there.

I have shorties, but am in dire need of a catless or high flow catted H pipe. I have Stainless Stang GT Tails, and Magnaflow tips, just missing the center section.

That ler arrangement looks atrocious Mikey...cut'em off and start again!  As far as turndowns, go with just enough so it looks like it's directing exhaust gas just under the rear axle...otherwise the sound will just reverberate off the ground and give you a headache...either way, i still say tailpipes are for pusswads! lol, j/k...

I was driving next to a concrete highway divider today and my exhaust sounded like absolute ...sounds WAY too mellow for full length headers, no cats and 40-series flowmasters...off with the tail pipes, I say!

I had a 40 series on my birdie for quite a few years before breaking the stock motormounts. Sounded pretty good but the rest of the exhaust was stock :(

As it stands right now, Slopoke's exhaust is pitiful  . Fake factory duals, some turbo knock off lers and the cats were supposedly gutted.
That will change soon,  upr x pipe, borla xs lers, pypes flowtubes, and jba coated headers. Just need tailpipes, hangers, clamps, and exhaust wrap.
To desktop dyno exhaust seems unimportant for forced induction, because it 'grays out' that section and won't let you change it. Maybe they think if all that fuel and air is going in it has to come out  or is it for some other reason? It shows to definately make a difference in normally aspirated engines.

uh factory ho headers, factory h pipe, thats it right now sounds OK, a little to quite for me, no joke, 4 cats kills is big time
coming soon, mac h pipe with gutted cats, flowmasters and 2 1/2 tails.

dang, all of you guys have good exhaust systems.
all i have is a catback..... my father told a exhaust guy for a whole new dual exhaust but the idoit only did a new cat and bigger pipes after that.. everything is still stock from my stainless steel headers to the new highflow cat. (yes, i still even have those 2 little cats after the headers....
the exhaust guy said a true dual exhuast couldnt be done without alot of prep work because there are wires where the pipe had to go underneith the drivers side.
