Title: TC Chronicles --- Engine Assembly
Post by: CougarSE on August 06, 2007, 08:48:50 PM
Stage One = Engine Tear Down---

This is an 88 Mark VII engine, 170k miles.  I got it for a little over $50 bucks on Pick-N-Pulls %50 off weekend.

I've bounced back and forth between just dropping this engine in the car or rebuilding it.  After realizing what I plan to do with this car I chose the latter.

So far I have one head off the engine and I'm very pleased at what I've found.  Very nice bores with crosshatch still intact. :)  The engine has nearly no sludge, I was only able to find one small crusty spot. Now the water jackets, :yuck: very crusty.  Looks like I'll be cleaning this block up myself and putting new bearings and rings in it.  No machine shop visit for this engine.  I will be tearing the heads apart and porting the hell out of them as I'm not ready to purchase new ones.

Here we have the engine as it sits.  I may take the other head off tonight and I may not.

Here we have some nice bores.

Only bit of sludge in the engine.

What will be your technique for porting the heads?

Probably follow one of the many online guides out there.  Plus I'll call Nick every 20 minutes :)  I have an air die grinder, I'll just buy a home porting kit for it.

Cool. I forgot if you told me this, but are you putting a T5 behind it?
I'll be excited to see pictures of the progress.

Out of curiosity, just an engine swap because you have the engine? Or did the 2.3 go to hell? Nice find on parts. Are you putting a different cam in, or are you just porting the heads, and rebuilding and going HO?

$50.00.Awesome.My block also has the "xxx" designation. What does that mean?My friend took the original engine that was in my Sport and it had a "yyy" stamp in it.Those heads need a lot of porting on the exhaust side for sure.Tiny little ports aren't they.Good luck with the project.Keep us posted.

If i sell the 83 then this shortblock will see the machine shop.  I'll probably pick up a set of GT40/p's to wake it up a bit.  The camshaft will be changed to something that suits my needs and plans.  When I purchased this car it was purly for parts only, yet arriving to pick it up I was presented with a car in better shape than both my Cougars.  It had no motor and the only 2.3 I have has a toast #1 cylinder.  Plus I don't want a 2.3, they are cool and all.  Blah blah not a turbo coupe anymore.... lol  Its a TC, and 5.0 or not it will still be a TC.

I just wondered about the background. Finding cars in better than suspected condition is a blessing. Sounds like it should be a nice running car in no time then.

So thats what a clean 5.0 block *should* look like.
What all do you have planned for the 5.0 combo parts wise?

I'm not one to condone this with a TC but STOCK 5.0-302 WTF? If you are gonna go that route go all forged bottom in and maybe even drop the compression just a little run 8-1 or 8.5-1 then you will be set. As in set to make that thing live up to its name and twin turbo that puppy. Then atleast you are keeping with the one turbo per four cylinders. Either that or MONSTER shot of NOS! You have to make it be able to rape and pillage the unsuspecting Stang, Camaro, Vette, Porche, many many many things that think they have it made. Then you will make them respect you and your car! LOL

I'm taking the block back to the machine shop to have cam bearings and freeze plugs installed in about an hour... should be ready for me to pick up mid next week..

Oh and the engine will be in the car stock, to get the bugs worked out ;)  From there who knows.

the only time i will condone doing a v8 swap on a turbocoupe is if the v8 in question is turbocharged.

Block is at the machine shop..

The machine shop guy wants me to align hone the mains after I told him what I wanted to do with it. Also wants me to get all ARP fasteners..  I told him this is going to be the running mock up engine.

Looks like the engine will be having GT40P heads and an explorer intake.. granted I find a lower.  Have to find a decent cam for the combo and buy an A9L...And a tweecer.

Going to pick this up soon.. :)  I just bought it.  Then I will pick up the intake from Fila and have a set.  Who knows I may not need to go with a spacer to clear my fuel rail on this intake.. but then again I might.

The stock 5.0 fuel rail bolts right up like it belongs there (On the GT-40).I have an Explorer intake on mine.I had the hole for the ACT sensor drilled and tapped,as well as the water line at the rear of the passenger side of the lower.

No. I made a thread on it..  They are unique and only usable or desired when converting a TC to 5.0 and keeping the TC hard lines.

Ok time to spill the beans.

These will be strapped to the side of this motor.

Attached to these...

Rebuilt stock short block with ARP Main bolts, ARP rod bolts and ARP head bolts..  GT40P heads and an Explorer intake.. All will be ported before being installed..  Twin IHI's at 10psi,  I'll be using 30lb injectors or 35's if I can find a 8.  They will do for 10psi..  I figure the IHI's will be capable of 15psi before they are done.. but 10 is the number for now..

A tweecer and an A9L will be controlling this.  Probably a 75mm maf as well..

for what it's worth, i've seen BONE stock 302's with a home made single t3 turbo setup make 390 horse and 440 torque at the wheels.

with a set of good sized turbos, forged internals, and a good fuel system, your block will be your limiting factor.

it was a t3 from a turbocoupe... one of my old ones.  i "think" he was running about 8-10 psi, but honestly i don't remember... this was years ago.

No you havnt. There is no way in hell a 5.0 can breath through a T3. I maxed out a T3/T04B V-trim on a 2.3L...how do you think a 5.0 would do with a single T3?

Actually it will be very easy.. The tubes go up instead of down so the plugs are exposed..

Are you running SD on your GT40P headed engine?

Yep I'm running SD and an aftermarket cam (Comp Magnum 266HR grind 35-308-8) Runs great. I just had to adjust the idle a bit and it runs fine.

Had to tweak one of the tubes so it would miss the FPR.  I'm thinking about getting a earlier model truck rail so I can use three bolt FPR's, I'm limited to my selection of boost referencing FPR's now.

That is all. I won't  in your thread anymore.

Just throwing it out there.
PM if you are interested.

Should go good with the *P* heads. Just make sure to use stiffer valve springs. The stock ones probably won't hold up to the lift of the cam.

He just didn't mask anything. That's ok. The oil filter will catch all that. I think. ;)

Depending on what camshaft I go with.  Right now I'm looking at a Trick Flow Stage 1, if I go with it I wont have to go with new springs.  Now I've been looking at a Stage 2 as well, If I go with it I'll have to get new springs..  Rockers are just not in the budget at the moment.

If you spin the motor to 6000 RPM or above with a TFS 1 (which you SHOULD) I'd get new springs......

Yeah I have a .533 lift Comp 266HR cam and I had the machiene shop put in high lift Comp valve springs. I spin the thing to 5,500 some times and with the stock GT40P springs I'd get some valve float :hick:

They are a good piece, but there are (according to a few engine builders) even better ones out there.  I have the Trick Flow springs that came with the Twisted Wedge heads I have and they seem to be doing just fine.  Here's some good reading:

Sounds like a nice cam. Comp makes a very good product. It might be a little weak down low (under 2,500 rpms) but it'll pull like hell up high:D

a lot of times custom cams are ground by comp/crane. the builder just sends his specs to them, and they cut it.

This one has the part number machined on the end...

I just got back from Jegs an hour ago with a set of crane valve springs..  Decent price and spring rate of 330#  they take a .580 lift.

Yeah the 24's will be for n/a.. The engine will be in the car n/a for a while.. until I can afford the rest of the turbo stuff..  I was going to go with 30#ers but I think I will up it to 42's.

I just mounted the timing cover on the engine.  I was going to do more work to it but I'm getting dragged to steak and shake.

I'm glad to see that you didn't get the F cam. I think the cam you got with the 114 LSA will be alot better.

What are you doing for an intercooler? I was going to run 2 87 TC intercoolers up front for my set up. 1 for each turbo and Y them together on the outlet side.

Anyway, good luck with your project. I sold most of my turbo stuff because I got cold feet... I didnt think I could pull it off. I'm lookin forward to hearing how that thing is gonna run. It should be a beast!
