Title: Cleaned up some under hood
Post by: 84 Fila on August 06, 2007, 02:03:50 PM
Here are a few pics from me cleaning under hood. It may be a repost to a few people pics wise, but I have a question. When I was cleaning the strut towers, firewall, inner fenders..... the paint kept coming off and I was left with a grey primer I assume. I didn't use any harsh cleaners( a rag, dawn with bleach and a scrubbie pad for the really tough sticky black stuff) and paint still came off. My question is do I scrub ALL the paint off and have the underhood grey primer or re-paint it white?

looks like you should tend to the oil leaks first.

I'm soaking the block in de-greeser today hopefuly if it doesn't rain again. It doeasn't apear to pour out any oil, and that may be from when I pulled the water pump and just didn't clean all the fluid off or something. I'll know soon.

After you get the engine clean, paint the under hood area.Did you install a new o-ring on the distributor? You may need one. Also,is it leaking oil from the front and rear of the intake?

Around the intake was from when I pulled the radiator hose. As for the oil leak it was the old seal from the timing chain to oil pan. All it cleaned up now. Dizzy o ring was replaced. What color should the underhood area be painted? Oppions?

White is just not a good color for under the hood, That's for sure. :hick:

I was gonna either keep my factory midnight charcoaly color, Or go black on mine.

BTW~
Are you running the car without the coolant overflow tank thinger? And does it run fine without it?

At the moment yes, I don't have the stock one in. I'm going to mount one in front of the radiator like the later V8 cars.

As for the color I may try to "wash off" all the white paint and leave it grey primer. Then again kinda like the body color white as well. It really sets off the underhood. Atleast it's something pretty to look at

Hmm, Sounds good.

The reason i say it isn't the best choice is because the dirt likes to cling to the white and make it grungy looking. :hick:

Yah,
I was thinking primer too for mine, So i could do small areas as i went along.
Then it will already be mostly prepped.
And later i could pull the engine and junk out, And paint the whole thing up nice.

Thats the whole idea. This motor isn't staying in forever. Even if I just rebuild it it has to come out and I can weld all the holes and paint it. Just looking for a solution now as it looks worse with grey and white area's then it did covered in dirt

I gave up my loosing battle underhood and cleaned up the rest of the car a bit as well. Still looks like  but I think it's getting better

yeah it looks better clean.  Pull the motor and scuff up the inner fenders and paint the engine bay body colour. Looks way better.

black will show less dirt and make touchups a breeze.

Yea, It would go along with the overall color scheme of your car too.

I dunno... Maybe look for some pictures of white cars with black engine compartments to help you decide or something?

I think you sold me on black. It would make all the allumnium stand out as well. Is there any way to paint it and do a good job with the motor still in the car? Just mask things off and take my time?

TAKE YOUR TIME and mask everything off really good. Some platic wrap on the wiring harnesses,a lot of tape and paper.I use old magazines with shiny pages.they work great, and I've nt experienced bleed through with the paint.

Semi-gloss,or semi-flat.Same thing.No gloss,and no flat.

I was thinking newspaper and blue painters tape.

aluminum foil works good for hard to tape items.

Newspaper bleeds through too easy (my own opinion).

Well, for painting some semi-flat black, newspaper will probably be fine.that paint dries fast.

This we shall try:hick:

How many cans you think it will take, 3-4? And what all should be painted? I was thinking firewall, radiator "frame", framerails, inner fenders... Just about everything white now
