Title: window trim question
Post by: turboranger91 on August 02, 2007, 04:33:12 PM
so i bought this turbocoupe, and it's got chrome trim around the windows.  thing is, turbocoupes didn't come with this.  this car was "restored" by the uncle of the kid i bought it from (or someone).

question is, how much of a pain in the ass is it to swap back to an all black trim?

here's a picture for reference.

i'll give it a shot, but it looks like the trim is shaped like a "C" and the black rubber is filling up the inside.  so it's holding on.  do i still just pry it off?

i don't think it looks bad, but it's just not my thing... i'm not a big fan of chrome, plus it's not how the car was originally.

To replace the stuff around the door windows you've got to remove the door windows, then their channels, and then you'll find that trim riveted onto the door.

The quarter windows will have to be replaced - the trim is part of them and is not replaceable.

The windshield and backlight trim are actually fairly easy, as they're held on with clips (the side trim pieces on the windshield are actually held on with screws). It can be a pain in the butt to release the trim from the clips, though, especially with the rear window. The trim bends very easily.

jesus christ!  so what you're telling me is, i've got to wait till this car gets broken into too?  since i've moved out to kansas city, my old neon, my ranger, my cobalt ss/sc, my 85 turbocoupe, and my sho, have ALL been broken into.  when i lived in florida, i had about 15 cars and none of them were ever touched.

anyway, good god.  that's pretty in depth.

Look, just mask it all off and get a can of Krylon. In three hours time no one will know the difference.

Looks like that's what someone did with the silver... It's about three times wider than the factory striping...

Agreed. I'd put a beer on it too. Just paint it all black again.

Aha. When I first saw pics of your car I wondered why the trim wasn't blacked-out. If it means anything, I'd leave it as-is. The car is so glossy that I think the chrome trim sets it off nicely.

i'm not sure about painting it... that seems like the cheap way out.  besides, it's got a spot on the driver side quarter glass where the trim has been... "repaired".  (http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=11773&stc=1&d=1182476210)

Those are starting to look like the "real" trim, but I don't think it peels off. If your's is peeling, it's just add-on trim. Peel it all off!!
