Title: Cat Jam 2008
Post by: EricCoolCats on July 30, 2007, 01:36:44 PM
...because I know someone's going to start the thread, sooner or later. ;)

Let me just say that, fresh from CJ07, there's not much I'd like to see changed. Maybe some starting times for certain things. Otherwise I think this show nailed it, as far as mixing events and getting to and from locations. Very smooth, almost effortless.

Everything from the past year that we had discussed in this section for CJ07 was implemented:

- Standard registration fees were a huge success.
- Everyone seems to have loved the tour of the park.
- The response for the Angels for Animals tour was AMAZING (~50 people).
- The donation organizations multiplied without incident..
- Our donation money nearly doubled, thanks to the registration fees, the auction, and generosity.
- I understand that everyone loved the pizza Saturday night.

So...as you can see, our community message board has helped the show evolve into a more robust event. It's all thanks to YOU and your suggestions. I'm extremely happy with how events unfolded for CJ07 and look forward to setting the foundation for CJ08 immediately.

I have a few ideas for CJ08 that I'll post in this thread once I get more info.

I will be working on accommodations within the next few weeks.
We found a less expensive hotel who is willing to host us..... I'll be getting better details later.

I know I already said this to several people at CJ but I thought the variety of optional activities was great. I also liked going to AforA and being able to play with the cats.

Nothing you can do Eric but to everyone else, I wish I knew who was coming early and/or staying late when I was reserving my room and making plans. One year, I stayed until Monday but no one else did. This year, several people came a day or more early and stayed late. I may come a day early next year (if I can come at all) to clean my car from the trip so I have more of Friday and Saturday to do other stuff.

I heard that someone was very unhappy with Microtel so anyone with Microtel reviews may want to chime in.

That could have been us.. LOL, it was fine but the wall to wall sized mirror across the bed kind of freaked us out, LOL.  That and the beds were hard as rock.  But it was a hell of alot better then the floor or the car.

microtel beds did suck! however for $50 bucks a night, just to hold my stuff , two showers and a place to brush my teeth,,,i'll be in the same room next year!!! that $100 bucks i saved was gas $$ for the trip home

It costed us $95 for the night :(

When I get to working on the motels/hotels, I'll make sure to take a poll and see what everyone thought.
I agree, the beds were hard as rocks, but I was too tired to care. LOL

I also heard they are getting new beds, so I'll be sure to check on that too.
For $50 a night, I'll be staying there again too, and they even had 24 hr coffee. ;)

Ya know, we would be cool with camping too, as long as they have showers! We have at least 5 tents, and sleeping bags, even air mattresses..... camping is the bomb!

There are no real close campgrounds relative to the hotels. Closest may be around 20-25 miles away, with no direct way to get to the hotels from there. Believe me, I checked into this a few years ago upon request. There is no ultimate campground solution unfortunately.

I have to check with Diane @ Angels about something, then I can get to finalizing the dates for 2008.

I wonder if the RRI would be apposed to people camping in the grass around the parking lot.  If they are booked I'm sure they would take $20-$30 a night so we could sleep.

I'm sure there are a host of ordinances that wouldn't allow that one.

I heard that someone was very unhappy with Microtel so anyone with Microtel reviews may want to chime in.

That would be us. Based on other's experience I think we just go a really bad room. Besides the fact of it's location (by the exit door/stairwell) it was dirty. Embedded filth. Everything from the carpet to the chair to the mattress, sheets, hell even the walls was stained with something. =/

On the plus side, all the tables and floors and other hard surfaces seemed to be clean, but that was of little consolation at the time.

If we could of found another hotel we would of just left without asking for a refund. And believe me we tried finding one. Even called a Banquet Hall thinking it was a hotel, lol.

So yeah, won't be staying at Microtel next year. We are staying at the Hampton Inn next year for sures.

We stayed at the RRI and it was...okay.:disappoin  Maybe my standards are a bit too high, but even paying the higher price at the RRI, there were still stains in the carpet, a clean but generally comfort-lacking atmosphere, the beds were too soft for this goldy-locks and no coffee maker/hairdryer in the room {WTF!!!}, but seriously it was a place to bed down for the night. So you have to decide is a little luxury what will make your trip more pleasant or gas money so you can take some extra side trips more your goal? It's a choice every CatJammer must face!

I do think it would be cool to rent out a campground for CatJam someday, somewhere where there are recreational facilities (fishing, boating, swimming). What if the picnic was sandwich trays and stuff that could be ordered from a local grocery store and picked up for the picnic, rather than a few people having to do all the work? When I was a kid, we used to camp at a nice place near Sandusky...Cat/Bird cruise to the Point would be fun!!! It may not be a reality in the next few years, but could be something we could think about for the future?

Yeah I made sure not to touch any of the cats as I'm violently allergic. I still manged to catch a cold that manifested itself halfway back on Sunday and I've been in bed ever since :(
