alex's clutch cable broke on him in Hamilton, and he is stranded. I thought the four bangers had a hydrolic clutch, but alex says it is a cable that snapped. If it is cable, Will the 5.0L clutch cable work on the turbo 4's tranny? as I have one here I can give him.
I think so (83-86 Turbo birds and cougs had cables). If not he should be able to drive it home by powershifting and shifting into neutral when coming to stops, then shutting the car off and starting it in gear when it comes time to start moving again
4banger tranny guys should carry a spare dogbone cable in the glovebox. they tend to break. not sure that is exactly his problem or not, but it is common.
no, a 5.0 cable wont work AFAIK. the 4banger tranny uses a shorter cable with a bellcrank and a dogbone to the clutch fork.

If you know how to drive 'em without the clutch, it ain't a real problem... I drove a old work Econoline back from Portsmouth to Va Beach twice without the clutch... Even came through the tunnel and paid the toll(was a while, back tolls have been removed for some time)... Just knock it in neutral and shut it off... Stop pay the toll, pull it in 1st, hit the starter and away I went...

Of course you'll have to start it in gear, but once it gets rolling just bring up the RPMs to say 3500, let off the gas and firmly pull back to second at the same time... IF you get it right, it will fall in gear as easily as if you were using the clutch... 1st to 2nd is defiantly tricky, but it gets easier as you shift to higher gears... To down shift(also if you don't get the up shift), slip it to neutral, rev the engine, let off and pull/push into the needed gear, again if the RPMs are correct it will almost fall in... Trick is the right pressure applied to the shifter as you go into each gear... Basically when the engine speed matches the speed of the next gear, it is easy...
I showed the daughter how to do it in the old '87 Stang(long gone), and she said she often shifted to 4th & 5th without using the clutch...

Did the same thing back and forth to work for about 4 days waiting for "payday" and the parts to come in to fix the clutch on my 70 Torino years ago.
I will add when comming up to a red light, try to creep up on the light and time it so you never HAVE to go to neutral idle in 1st (5 mph or so) until green light then just go. Saves starting it in gear.
But like he said if Speed and RPM match, the tranny will drop right into gear just as smooth as a baby's butt.
yeah I know how to do that, but alex doesn't. That is how I drive the Bird all the time, I only use the clutch if I am driving hard or to start and stop.
