Title: '86 Cougar XR-7
Post by: cougarcragar on July 13, 2007, 09:16:10 PM
Serious inquiries only.

The car is located in Parkersburg, WV, 26101. It is right on the OH/WV border and about three hours from Columbus or Pittsburgh.

1986 Mercury Cougar XR-7

The Good:
The car runs pretty well. The turbo spools up and creates boost. The engine has a freshly rebuilt head (3,000 miles). Nearly all of the cooling system has been replaced, including the heater core, water pump and radiator.
The transmission shifts perfectly and makes no noises. The clutch is nice and tight.
The interior is in great shape for its age. The seats are dry and cracking, but I've done my best to make it look good. There are some subtle modifications, such as the gauge pod with boost and a/f ratio gauges.
All of the glass is in excellent condition; the vent windows operate as they should. I've replaced all of the weatherstripping and trim on the door glass.
All of the lights work as they should, but I can't get the hazards to function. The Marchal fog lights have been rewired with a relay and function perfectly.
The car spent most of its life in Florida, so the undercarriage is in fantastic shape. The car has never been wrecked to my knowledge.
I've replaced so many parts since I bought it. It has a fresh head, head gasket, cooling system, most if the front suspension, exterior lights, interior trim parts, and much more.
The plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and many vacuum lines have all been replaced (Motorcraft parts).
The tires have only 8,000 miles on them.
The car has new front shocks, inner tie rods and upper strut mounts, but something is still making noise.
The car has been upgraded with an 8UA computer, big VAM and a top mount intercooler with hood. It has the original T3 turbo.
I have the original keys for the car.

The bad:
The turbo may be on its way out. There is some shaft play. I believe the impeller is making contact with the compressor housing, as I sometimes hear a high-pitched sing sound while driving the car.
The head was reinstalled without dowel pins. This means that the head may have a propensity to "walk" and blow again (or so I've read over at NATO). I have no idea, but I thought it should be mentioned. It has shown no signs of failing.
The brake booster is hissing. The car still brakes fine, but I can't be sure of how long the booster will last.
The car has some rust, but it's minimal. There is some rust on the bottom edge of the driver's door, on the sides of the roof (where the top of the door meets), and some light rust on the lip of the trunklid.
The paint is toast.
The cruise is fully functional, but I swapped to a later throttle body and the cable won't reach the throttle linkage, so the cable has been disconnected.
The power door locks do not work. I'm not sure what's wrong with them; I just got used to it.
The AC system has been totally gutted from the car. The condenser, compressor, and lines have all been removed and thrown out (it was all bad).
The exhaust may need to be replaced within the next year or so.
I think the power steering pump may be failing. It's making more noise than usual (for a Ford, even).
The brakes squeal, but they seem to be fine otherwise.
The suspension squeaks up front.
Update: 1/14/08
Now, for whatever reason, it will occasionally and quickly grind going into third gear when the car is cold. It only happens for the first few minutes of driving, and it only happens about 20% of the time. It engages into third just fine, but there's a slight grind during the shift. I have no idea why it started doing this and I don't really care. I thought I would mention it, though.

Extra parts:
Included with this car will be the original 10-hole wheels and centercaps. I also have an IHI turbo that has minimal shaft play, but I have no other information on it.
I have all of the body trim for this car, including the often-missing XR-7 badges on the front fenders. I worked hard to get those things. The trim will need to be refinished. All of the trim is off the car, but it will be included.
I have brand-new front rotors and pads for it.

I also have extra parts that I could sell at additional cost, such as NOS XR-7 emblems, header panel, spare fog lights, mint trim bezels, switches, NOS uncut turbo keys, and a few other small parts. I was preparing to restore this car, but I must sell it for personal reasons.
It has been a very difficult decision for me to sell it, and I want the new owner to keep it as it is. I don't want to see a V8 under its hood after I hand over the keys, in other words.

Added new info to the first post.
Guys, save this car. Don't make me sell it to some local hilljack who will swap the engine.

I drove it today and discovered at least one of the injectors is leaking; there are small pools of gas on the lower intake.
The price has been adjusted accordingly.

Bump.

There may be some confusion due to my first post.
I need to clarify that this car runs and drives exactly as it should.
In fact, I drive it two to three times a week.
