Title: bbk headers/ 84 tbird ?
Post by: JrP on July 10, 2007, 10:10:45 AM
It looks like I am going to get a set of bbk shorty headers  #bbk-15150 for my 84 tbird.  Has anybody installed these on an 84?        Have you run into any problems with clearance around the steering column or shift linkage?  Which type of plug wire boots do you need --straight or 90 degree?
I know that some custom pipe work will be required to hook to my  existing exhaust.

Get a double hump tranny cross member and an h or x pipe. You may have a litle clearance problem with the shift linkage, which, some members here have been able to overcome by adjusting the linkage a little to adapt to the header fitment. Also, with my BBK's ('88 Bird),my header on the driver side slightlu rubbed the steering shaft,I just barely tapped the header a little flat spot about the size of a quarter and all was good.Looking at the header, you can barey tell where I tapped it.Get all of your parts before you even start. You'll need to fit the driver side header on and check your clearance of the linkage and steering shaft and adjust as necessary.

thx for the info,i was going to get coated headers and am afraid that i will have to tweak them, that the ceramic will break.. It may be best to skip the ceramic and just paint a steel header. Hedman makes a steel shorty header #hed-88380 that is made for 83-88 tbirds. Do you know anything about these

The only ones I've used other than factory Stang headers are the BBK's,and I love them. They have proven to be great. For a stock engine, factory Satng headers are plenty, and ultra cheap.
