Title: What holds on the door mldg?
Post by: Dansbirds on June 27, 2007, 06:08:58 PM
Have a 87 bird and on the back edge of the door, would be at the b pillar area is a black mldg on the door. At some point in my cars life it was painted black by what appears to have been a brush.(and not very well done either) What holds this piece on as I want to remove it and repaint it correctly. Thanks

You talking about the black molding in the front side of the quarter glass?

I don't think that's removable without taking the glass out.

Are you talking about the rear most part of the trim at the back of the window? on my 84 is snaps off  from a bracket that is screwed into the door. Simple to get off if its the same way.

On 87-88 models it's glued on (if you're talking about the black panel at the rearmost edge of the door glass). If you can get yours off without destroying it let me know - I'd like to take mine off for the paint job :hick:

I was hoping it wasnt glued but feared it was. I can wiggle it a little so I figure the adhesive to be breaking down. I will let you know how it works out

Take a heat gun, and/or hair dryer to it, that should soften the adhesive and you should be able to gently and slowly(time consuming) pull it off.

Yeah.... I need to take that off and paint it. I really dont like the idea of trying to mask off the ENTIRE side of the car to paint it in place.

83-86 cars it is held on by a clip setup on the door. I have mine off. If I remember right you pry up on the front edge and then once it pops up you push the piece to the rear of the car. Then is should be off of there for you. I have proof for you all.

And also you don't have to remove any windows to take off the rear trim either.

The 87-88 setup is different if I remember right.  It uses no clips that i can tell anywyas. thats the problem. if the 87-88 trim was as easy as that, id do it in a heartbeat.
