I've had my '78 bronco on the road for 2 weeks with no problem then out of nowhere it started sputtering, and stall when no throttle is applied, have to hold it to the floor when I start it, even then it just chugs belching the ol' black smoke out of it. going down the road about 1/2 throttle it runs good, but I let off and it stalls. I set the carb up right. Duraspark maybe?
Engine:
Ford 400M
holley street avenger intake
Edelbrock 600cfm manual choke-fresh rebuild
MSD cap/rotor
new plugs/wires
not likely, vac advance hooked up? dist. bolt tightened down? did you install the timing gear "straight up"
the duraspark II is pretty reliable.
try asking here: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum54/
I didn't have the engine apart so I do't know about the timing gears, the dist is tight.the advance was hooked up last I knew
How hot was it? putting 1/4" spacers behind the spark box on the fenderwell is a plus to keep it from frying.
like 80 degrees yesterday (monday)
it's odd...I let off it sputtered, I put it in N and revved it...cleared up, was fine till I hit the brakes and came to a stop then stalled
FWIW, try my link, these guys know their 335 series engines. If you don't want to register, and/or can't posta question, I can post it for you, but right now I have to get my wife at the airport. So it wouldn't be til tomorrow afternoon.
which link?

I had this problem in my cougar but its been a while. try running some seafoam down your carb to clean everything. it may be possible that your float could be sticking if it has sat for a while.
Motercraft carb?,has the outside gas pump, they drye out .
78's I have fond memorys with them,It could be the box, solved many of my problems.Probably has the blue wire connector.
