Title: Is anyone else sick of hearing about the iPhone?
Post by: Quietleaf on June 26, 2007, 08:24:18 PM
I know I am. And I'm REALLY sick of friends-turned-fanboys pressuring me to ditch my Palm and my phone and buy one. It seems like every time I see them, "Are you going to get an iPhone?" "Why aren't you getting an iPhone?" "You know they're better than your phone and your Palm, right?" "But they're just so COOL!"
Then it always turns into a tirade against all things PC: "Microsoft stole Apple's ideas!" I heard that one four times tonight. "Apple makes a superior product!"
Can I throw up yet? People are standing in line as we speak in NYC to buy an iPhone, and my friends talk about it as if there's nothing, oh, I don't know, DEMENTED about it. If iPhone's had gender, these people would be arrested as stalkers. Good grief! People must really want to be cool or something. Should we be prescribing Prozac? I mean, there must be some serious problems with the self-esteem of a lot of people...it's like this is their only chance in life to ever be hip, and if they don't get an iPhone before it's all blase they'll miss it.
*hurl*
No. I'm NOT getting one. I didn't buy a Mustang because everyone else had one, and I'm not falling for this hype either. Remember the RAZR? I didn't fall for that, either.

Considering how SUCK ASS Microsoft's PDA OS is I am kind of excited. The ONLY thing impressive about MS Pocket PC is the ability to use Exchange Push technology. Other than that it is the most god awful product I have ever used.. And I've used many on many different platforms!!

As a long-time Apple product user, I can a) appreciate the iProduct flyer (brilliant, thank you!), and b) NOT recommend the iPhone right now. One never wants to purchase a first-generation Apple product. Things always get improved later on, with more features, and more importantly FIXES, for the same price or less. It would behoove people to wait a little longer if they can.
Now about the lines of people...there aren't going to be many iPhones to begin with. Here in my 'hood, it probably won't be an issue. But in big cities it's going to be a major issue. The stores aren't even getting the iPhone shipments until Friday! So those lining up now, you can say they're either really dumb, or really smart. Whatever floats their boats.
I really hope it lives up to the hype, as there's a lot riding on this phone, particularly to the stockholders. I don't like the non-replaceable battery...you'd think Apple would have learned from the iPod battery fiasco. I don't like that there's only one carrier for iPhone service (although I do have Cingular and they have been absolutely wonderful for me). But...things will improve, it will get better...hell, I predict even before this Christmas we'll see revisions in the iPhone and iPod (look for late October).
This morning, as the final pricing tiers were announced, I was tempted....the $59 monthly plan is affordable; would be right in line with what use, minute-wise, right now; includes unlimited data transfer; and, IF the EDGE network is available at my house, I could technically use the iPhone for a long-awaited high-speed Internet connection, possibly as a modem bridge. Like I said, it's tempting. But my logical side says to wait. ;)

Hopefully EDGE is worth the hype.. as I know its not available here and the high speed that is available is god awful slow.. so slow in fact its probably the same as a 14k dialup connection...
Now Sprints high speed... Woopee! That shiznit is fast.. Can download at like 130k a second.. Fast in today's standards.... Hardly but over a cell connection? Hell yeah! I used to use my phone for internet on my Linux laptop (easier to setup than Windows, trust me) for field needs...
When I switched to Cingular I almost cried....

I blotted out the language in the pic to keep it clean. You can search for iProduct on the net for the real one...by the way, I have an iPod as well, but I waited until the 5g to get one. That's when it met my particular feature threshold.
I HATE the iPod software, by the way (on the unit as well as iTunes). This weekend I plan on loading Rockbox onto it instead.

I don't have a cell phone and I do have and MP3 player and a laptop. No Thanks I don't want a stinking Iphone. Just another thing to stop me from doing what I really need to do.

I agree. I hate hype in all forms and for all things. The second something becomes popular, i have to abandon it. Maybe that's why I drive a 20 y/o tbird.

Maybe you missed my point... Our cars are the opposite of the iPhone b/s. That makes them classic and valuable. Not just a passing fad.

I'm sorry guys but every commercial I sit in awe over a device potentially so far ahead of anything else in its competition.

I have a perfectly good Motorola cell phone, not the RAZR, they suck ass. I have and iPod Nano 4g, and other than the py software I like it. iTunes has too many problems. Especially with burning mp3 discs.
Im not into hypes like this. Thats why I dont a)own a Dell computer, I own an HP laptop b)dont own a RAZR c)dont own a mustang and d)listen to py Emotional Rock. They are fads that will pass. The technology is infact greatly above anything I have seen, but Eric is right, the 1st gen products only get replaced with bigger and better things.

I wonder when the "Iwontdothisbecauseeverybodyelsedoesthat" fad will pass. (not aimed at anyone in particular) :D
Anyhoos, since the iPhone is only available thru AT&T so I won't be getting one, even if the price tag was within my range. I'm stuck with Verizon forevermore! :( That said, I'm pretty excited to see how well it will do in the real world. It's got some pretty sweet features. Once everybody has calmed down a bit I'll head over and check it out.
Push FTW!!!

It demonstrates amazing functionality and a very smooth interface that is years beyond anything Microsoft has. Windows Mobile sucks so bad its ridiculous! Everyone I've had/used will randomly end a call, thats if you can get it to answer the call.. Most of the time it takes so long for it to actually register you answered the call you just miss the call. AND THE NUMBER ONE THING.. THE GOD THING JUST WONT RING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, I it just walks your dog for you, they haven't upgraded it yet. ;) That avatar makes me laugh every time I see it JeremyB, just because of the video it's from. lol.
I heard about the phone today for the first time at work. It's a sign
As far as to what is in and what is out, WHO CARES! If I like it, and it's popular and I can.....I buy it. If I like it, and everyone else hates it....I buy it. I've never gone for the popular, or just as bad, anti-popular stuff. I like Mustangs allot. I like my cougars better. I mean, everyone loved my 04' mach1, and I miss it a bit. My cougars mean so much more to me, even though it continuously breaks my heart and screams for more money.
I had to buy a cell phone for the first time a year ago, when I washed my last upgrade in the laundry. Oops. I have no land phone, just the cell. I bought the "sliver" for the features and the micro memory cards that go with it, and it's very small. It's nice, but it's just a phone.
I'm still waiting for the phone that folds out to a holograph flat panel monitor, with attachable sub woofers and true digital surround sound personally.

For me, the problem isn't the phone, it's the fanboys. This isn't the first time fanboys got downright obnoxious about an Apple product. Allow me to quote a couple of things from two years ago on another board, regarding the parody I posted on page 1:
Quote
The rebuttal is funny, except that it completely misses the point. My ad doesn't bash Apple or any Apple product on quality or ease of use; that Apple products are solid and easy to figure out is not in dispute, which makes the Microsoft bashing in the rebuttal ad so bizarre. Let me repeat that: the ad doesn't bash Apple or Apple products. The real target is described in the first paragraph:
Do you live for every product announcement, every incremental upgrade, every rumor and fake screenshot? Do you toss and blare and drone and ****ing gurgle about Apple products morning, noon, and night?
I'm bashing you, not Apple. The attack is directed at Apple fanboys and fangirls, not against Apple products. You guys are crazy about the Apple stuff. And you are so incredibly defensive of Apple that you interpret an attack on you, the maniac fans of Apple, as an attack on Apple itself. You then invariably defend Apple products while bashing Microsoft. I've seen this happen time after time.
So, let me recap: Apple -- good. Apple products -- good. (Expensive, but good.) Apple fans -- crazy and annoying.
Quote
If you want to use a Mac, use it and be happy. But dear god PLEASE leave the rest of us alone!
That is the only point the author of this truly brilliant piece of satire is making.
And, because he is too much of a gentleman to say it, I will. The rebuttal is a pathetic turd. It's not funny, contains TYPOS and is just an immature and unoriginal schoolyard jab back at his satire. Ironic that it came out of the supposedly more enlightened, intelligent and artistic community!
Everything else is noise. Windows is nowhere near as horrible as 1000's of debates would have you believe nor is the Mac anywhere near as good (or as bad depending on perspective). Both platforms do nearly the same job, nearly as well, for nearly the same price. The PC IS cheaper, so the Mac folks need to let that argument go. The Mac Mini is $500 bare bare bare bones and built on a G4. Even buying from Dell, you can beat the Mac Mini pricewise. The Mac Mini design is, of course, excellent. Apple is a great design house.
Summary: if you want an Apple, buy one and enjoy it. Keep your politics out of it (notice the stab at Bush in the rebuttal satire? so obnoxious) and dont wear it like some badge of accomplishment. If any PC user wanted one, all we would have to do is save up a little more cash (there's REALITY again), go to an Apple store, put up with a facetious, goateed, know-it-all in a black shirt, and buy one. Then head to Starbucks and pose with it =P
The discussion I'm quoting from is below, and IMHO there are some very good arguments being made:
My point is: I'm sure the iPhone is an outstanding product. Most Apple products are. I've simply had it with obnoxious fanboys pressuring me to buy one. I don't take kindly to pressure and I'll refuse to get one simply because of the pressure being applied to me (note, I'm not talking about anyone on this board -- I'm just ranting  ).
