Title: Power window motor?
Post by: ipsd on June 25, 2007, 09:41:19 AM
Yesterday on the way home my passenger window wouldn't go back up. So I took the door panel off. I could hear the motor try to move with a click and noticed the power drain on the car. So I just tapped the motor with a screw driver and it went right up. Then on the way to the gas station I tried to roll it back down and nothing. So my question is can you use the motor out of the 85-88 cars in the 83-84cars. The ones in my 84 look alot bigger than the ones I took out of my 88 cougar. So does anyone know if I can use the 88 motor in the 84? They look to bolt up the same and have the same lookig gear.

you would be surprised how many fords share the same motors but the size of them may vary.  I know that once upon a time, i installed a motor from a crown vic in my 84.  the vic was in the same range of years as well.

there are three dimples on the inner part of the door where you would drill out in order to get an extention and a 10mm socket in there at the bolts.  you can see the dimpels after you remove the door panel, kinda below the speaker area.

good luck but this is something you just have to do a stare and compare while at the jy.

You can use an '88 power window motor in an '84. All of the window motors are interchangeable from 1983-88. I've never seen a different kind in there. Ford made a second style, common in 1989-up vehicles, that won't work in our cars. But for our era, virtually every Ford vehicle had the same style of motor as what we had.

I just had the same problem with my convertible, driver's side motor. It was a "new" motor...unfortunately it was a bad one, as it exhibited the identical behavior as yours. I purchased one from a different vendor and it's been perfect so far, plus has a lifetime warranty which I WILL use. ;)

The worst part is the motor was replaced right before I got it. My buudy that gave me the car is pissed at the place he got the motor from. I think he is gonna take it back for me. I do have the one form my 88 that was totaled.

I replaced the gears on one of mine about a year ago . The Ford Dealer still had the rebuild kits. They call it the window regulator rebuild kit. That gets you the gear and the grease to repack it with.

I think as the lube on the window mechanisim gets old and stiff it puts extra strain on the gears. They are designed to be the first thing that breaks.

Otay I went out and changed the window motor. There is a difference between the 84 and the 88  motors. The 84 is a large motor and the 88 is a small motor. The bolt pattern is different, and the bolt sizes are different.  The small one will bolt in you just have to leave out the bottom bolt that holds the motor in. I just reused the 84 motor the P.O. did a piss poor solder job on the wires when he installed the motor.
