Title: How to Rebuild the Traction Lok
Post by: jgonza2 on June 15, 2007, 02:39:26 AM
I've got a limited slip diff from an 84 Turbo Coupe, and it has preload springs and spring plates.  From what I've read elsewhere on this forum, it may be an Auburn unit.  I want to rebuild it, but I need step one: how do you remove those springs and plates?

Thanks.:D

I have never done one but Google is your friend, lot of info there, here's one http://www.redpulsar.us/~coldfusion/tlok.html

Sounds like putting the S-spring back in is the hard part.

I lucked out and found a F-150 complete unit on eBay for a good price so I did not have to go through mine.  I needed to unit for 31 axle anyways.

Just did it a few mounths ago. Yes is as simple as it sounds and yes putting the spring back in is probably the worst part of it, and thats really no big deal, I just compressed it a bit with a pair of channel locks to get it started then tapped it into place.

I think the trak lok with the s-spring is probably not as difficult to reassemble as the one I have--it has preload springs and spring plates instead.  I did google this and found this http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:slzGqe5wVOMJ:www.auburngear.com/aftermarket/common/literature/Differential_DisAssy_Assy_Instructions.pdf+rebuild+auburn+spring+plates&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a does seem to explain it, but doesn't sound too easy.  Has anyone tried it?

I've edited the link, now it works.  The html version shows pics.  I'm wondering if I'll be able to get the spring plate back in...
