This is going to be fun. Ive decided to loto off the 1987 evtm on cd as the bootie!
Go to the end last page of this topic and scroll backwards to find the latest question.
Rules,, ill ask a Fox related question (suject to change) and the first correct reply will win a copy of the EVTM. You must back up your answer with some rational dgree of knowledge or database.
if you have already won,, dont answer, but you can assist others by helping a little.
If the time stamps are the same within the replies,, there will be a double winner If i see an answer not quite correct but the closest, it will be pointed out but no winnings will be awarded I will decide who won, that way its kept fun. Thunderchicken investigated the Trip minder installation into a car that did not come with the Trip minder itself.
According to him,(to which i consider the authority on this topic) what wiring mods need to be done for installation into your car if it was designed within the years trip minder was an option?

Cut the Tripminder loose with its connector on the back intact. Take a look at the wires on the back of the Tripminder. Notice how there are more pins in the harness than there are wires. Here are what the pins correlate to and their wire colors.
Pin 1: EMPTY Pin 2: EMPTY Pin 3: Ignition Power (light blue/black stripe) Pin 4: Dimmer (light blue/red stripe) Pin 5: Power (light green/yellow stripe) Pin 6: Fuel Flow Input (light blue/pink stripe) Pin 7: Ground (black) Pin 8: Speed Input (dark green/white stripe) Pin 9: Ground (black) NOTE: the wire colors may differ slightly from year to year. NOTE: Pin 7 and Pin 9 may or may not be connected together at the factory
Once you acquired a junkyard Tripminder, it would be wise to test it outside the car to verify it works. Hook up power, ground, and ignition. If the unit works you will see “12:00 RESET” on the display. Try the buttons. If some or all of the buttons don’t work, do not worry.
This is how you fix the buttons: take apart the computer (when turned off, in a static electricity free area) and clean the metal contacts of the buttons with that sandpaper. The Tripminder comes apart pretty quickly. A flathead screwdriver inserted into the four slots on the sides will separate the case into a front and a back side. Pull the back from the front and unfold the computer’s circuit boards. It unfolds like an accordion: I never said this was a well-engineered computer!
The last board is bolted to the front of the Tripminder via four 4mm bolts. Unbolt these and pull the circuit board free of the Tripminder. You will now see the other side of the circuit board: seven little push buttons (metal, not the plastic ones) that surround the vacuum fluorescent display of the Tripminder. Fold a small piece of the sand paper (sand on both the top and bottom) and GENTLY slide it between each of the seven buttons. You should be sliding the paper between the metal you see and the circuit board. Push down on the button and move the sandpaper up and down a few times. This will clean both sides and remove all corrosion/oxidation from the contacts. When this is done blow off any sand or residue with compressed air or your mouth. Reverse the disassembly process. Congratulations: you now have a brand new Tripminder computer!
Now take a look at the standard (what is currently in your car) digital clock’s wiring. When you compare this to the Tripminder you will see that you already have 5 of the 7 wires given to you! Who-hoo!
Pin 1: Ground (black) Pin 2: Power (light green/yellow stripe) Pin 3: Ignition (Light blue/Pink) Pin 4: Dimmer (Brown) NOTE: the wire colors may differ slightly from year to year.
You will need to remove the wires from your car's clock harness and splice them into the Tripminder's harness. Your brown wire (pin 4) goes to the Tripminder's brown wire (pin 4). Your black wire (pin 1) goes to the Tripminder's black (pin 9) wire. Your light blue/pink wire (pin 3) goes to the Tripminder's wire in pin 3 (colors may vary). Lastly, your light green/yellow wire (pin 2) goes to the Tripminder's light green/yellow (pin 5).
So yes, there are only two extra wires needed: all the others are there with the factory clock. One is for the fuel flow, which you will have to splice from PIN #34 at the EEC-IV engine computer. The other is the input wire for the speedometer.
For the speed input, you will have to remove the gauge cluster and disconnect its wiring harness. This is where the Ford EVTM manual will come in handy. Judging from my EVTM, the signal you want is located in circuit #150, remember its a dark green/white stripe wire. The buttstuffog performance cluster (XR-7 models) has the speed input at PIN #18. The regular cluster supposedly has it at PIN#3. Double check all wires and circuits to see if you are getting a pure speed signal from the engine computer. My 1988 model XR-7 with buttstuffog gauges had it in PIN #18 and there were two dark green/white striped wires feeding it. Your car MAY vary from this. Once you are sure you have found the right circuit, use a tap splice and connect a length of wire to this circuit. Run the wire back to the Tripminder and connect it to PIN #8 on the Tripminder. You now have speed information to your computer.
The fuel flow input works on the same principle. From what I have seen, all Ford products using EEC-IV computers have a “fuel flow” signal that comes from PIN#34 of the EEC computer. Judging by my car and many Lincoln Mark VII LSC owners, anyone that has done the Mass-air conversion should have no problem getting the signal either! Just remove the passenger side kick panel, slide out the computer and look for PIN#34 and a light blue/pink striped wire coming from it! Use the tap splice again and connect this wire to the Tripminder’s PIN#6. Route the wire between the glove box and the blower motor. I would suggest using a very long wire and tucking the extra length away, just in case you have to replace the blower and need that wire out of your way.

It is, apparently and typically of Ford, plug-and-play on some vehicles, but not on others. Mine was plug-and-play, but some people have had to run the wire to pin 34, and some don't have the jumper harness between the clock and main harness. Some quotes from the original thread:

Regardless, I still think of this as a very easy modification, much easier than, say, installing an aftermarket stereo. All of the circuits required to make it work are already in all 80's fuel injected Fords, but in some cars you have to go looking for them. Most of the circuits required to make the tripminder to work will be in the dash by the clock, whether you have the connector or not. The tripminder needs:
Power (constant 12V) Accessory (switched 12V) Inst Cluster lighting (switched on with dash lights) Ground
All of the above are at the clock, whether you've got the removable harness or not. It also needs:
VSS input (from speedometer) Fuel flow input (from pin 34 at the EEC-IV computer)
So if you get a tripminder with the connector still attached, at the most you'll have to run two wires, one to the cluster and one to the computer. You can find all of the others at your existing clock, so if you have to, you can cut the factory clock connector off and splice on the tripminder connector.

In my honest opinion, a memeber of this board has done the most unique engine swap that i can think of to date. No one here has done this swap but him and its a 3.8 SC. If i am incorrect on this then correct me please but i cant think of anyone but him. This car is a one of a kind.

The one that comes into the rear center of the CFI body? As I recall the return leaves at an angle toward the right (from sitting in car). Also, I think that one's the bigger of the two, plus it's right inline with the FPR.

which one is the feed,,,? i cant make heads or tails on your reply. It looks like your talking about both of them. no cfi fuel line came into the rear center.

hard one,, might have to pull an abe lincoln and do some reading.
On a CFI setup, its easy as hell to get a gallon of gas if you need cut the grass ect. all you do is unhook the passanger side fuel line and stick it up to your gas can. Next you would turn on your key but only a spurt of fuel would come out. :mad: to make the fuel pump run as long as you want,, WHICH WIRE DO YOU GROUND ON THE EEC TEST CONNECTOR TO MAKE THE FUEL PUMP RUN?

I am not sure of the color.
Well looking at the connector it would be the terminal on the right bottom close to the 4 terminals. Though i am looking at my 88 Sport so it could be different on the older cars.

*HINT* the color I posted on the pic isn't the best pic in the world, but the answer is there if you look hard enough. Also remember that colors fade over time. A red can turn to almost a pink, and grey to white.

the flag nees to be on the other way around. That is a left arm flag badge,, i hope the boyscouts know this cause its very important to apply badges correctly. Imagine there was a staff attached to that flag,, and you were holding that staff, you are in "RETREAT" mode.

The orientation of that flag promtes the fact that we are moving "backwards", not forward in battle. The badge needs to face "FORWARD" in your battle direction as you would expect of a brave soldier.

The only people allowed to wear a "backwards" flag on their right sleeve are soldiers. This is because they're the only ones that will be going to battle.

Any of the CFI cars. It's the round thing on top of the CFI. You take the little cover off (about the size of a dime) and you can adjust the fuel pressure.

no to the next loto question for a cd ot the 1987' EVTM (Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual)
You engine idle is rather high and you cant figure out why. Its not really too much to bother you but it exceeds specs.
With you key on only (KOEO), Someone on here told you to check and make sure you have less than 1volt DC on your green wire and about 4.6volts DC at wide open throttle.
What part are you checking on your engine?

It fills in the air gaps naturally occuring inside the barrel of a lug between the bands of wire and the inner wall of the lug. With no air present, there isnt much room for other chemestry involved in making corrosion happen.
Most electricians use the black stuff (actually not many use it cause they dont give a rats ass. The tube in the link will someday be held in the hands of someone who works telecom as it appears the color of honey but is transparent when applied cause its so translucent.

Pin 26 is the 5v reference(should have remembered that)... Since there is .833 ampere current being drawn, resistance is a hair over 6 ohms... 6.0024009 to be exact...
Divide the voltage by current for total resistance of the circuit...
or as Ohms Law states... E divided by I = R

for the posters,,,
in the drawing you got an E over an I and R E could also be V depending on what decade you attended electroics or what engineering style is applied. I-current R-resistance
so if you put your finger over E, you are faced with an I times an R value which will give you voltage. if you put your finger of I, you are faced with an E divided by an R value which will give you current if you put your finger over the R, you are faced wtih an E divided by I value which will give you resistance.

I just Yahooed EEC "pin 26" and found the info on the net... Yes I have the '88 EVTM, but was too lazy to go out to the garage to get it... That and I'm so friggin' senile I forgot my '86 Bird and Stang EVTMs are in the bookcase maybe 6ft away...

Since no one answered yet(and you said it would prob get tossed anyway)... In those systems there are only two injector drivers in each EEC... The CFI fires one inj at a time, while the EFI(not SEFI) fires three at a time, as they are wired parallel groups and not individually(want me to figure the total resistance :D)...
Ford refers to the systems as "bank fire", which is very confusing... What they mean is bank of injectors, not engine bank(right or left)... GM more correctly(OK less confusingly) refers to these systems as "batch fire"...
BTW the 2.3 turbo uses the same system, as does my '93 Lightning...

This problem came from my math cheet sheet quick reference guide i put together for homeschooling with an explaination. X=4 Y= -2
-3x – 10(x-y(5-4) + 7) -3 -3x – 10(x-y(1) + 7) -3 -3x – 10(x-(-2)(1) + 7) -3 ** insert -2 for Y but y was negative as well so a negative times a negative is a positive -3x – 10(x+2(1) + 7) -3 -3x – 10(x+2 + 7) -3 -3x – 10(4+2 + 7) -3 -3x – 10(13) -3 -3x – 10(13) -3 -3x – 130 -3 -3(4) – 130 -3 -12– 130 -3 < here is where some people get confused. When you have a bunch of negative numbers in a row,, you only need to add them up as though it were money you owe. So,,, you owe 12 then you owe 130 then you owe 3. No matter how you look at it, your still adding in a negative direction. Answer : - 145
The only difficult part of this problem is watching when you first insert the value of Y into the problem.

You have been told that your sluggish starting problem might be caused by a starter relay/solenoid getting worn out or the same for the starter.
you end up installing a new starter relay and suddently your car does not start. NO click, no crank, no nothing. you have interior power / radio / headlamps/ instruments ect but no crank.
whats likely to be the problem?

You overtightened the two posts on the solenoid, therefore creating internal pressure (warping?) and ruining the new solenoid.
