That's going to be the rarest TC on the planet! Only 500 Red Mach 1's were made, and yours has the factory power moonroof (9% of TOTAL production, so figure on 45 Mach 1's). That's insane, it's like the Hemi Vert Cuda of the Fox TBird/Cougar field.
Other then the RR 1/4, everything else looks good. No rust on the floorpans or framerails.
That car is definetly worth saving. If you gave it a hell of a polish you would be amazed. 2 hours and I could have that thing gleaming, you should fix that 1/4 and the surface rust and keep it. That is an awesome car.
Yeah. It's one of those cases where it looks worse than it is. Definitely worth saving.
if you want this summer if the 1/4s are good on my black one ill cut them out for ya
Your car looks better then mine... save it!!!
We cut the 1/4 off the 83 TC before we sped it. Not sure if it will work, but were gonna try. Obviously im not gonna use it if its a total missmatch.
let me know what you need
I don't see how you guys live with rust.I suppose I'm spoiled down here in Oklahoma (although I'm in Cali right now).My car is solid.
9im with vinnie... i have surface rust on the exhaust system and some dings and dents.. other than that my car is virtually rust free. i see rust and i think "throw it away." i mean on these cars its hard to go around and look till you see a rust free one, but i wouldnt dare buy one with that much rust on it... i guess its from living in the south east when they salt the roads one or 2 days a year (if it snows that year)
btw, i've seen even worse rust on ohio cars b/c at nti there were a bunch of guys from ohio and i swear they were the worst when it came to rusty 80's-90's cars. of course there were worse rust bukets from even further north cars.. but whoa...
My car has a few tiny rust spots that need to be taken care of, but nothing major.
In my experience Michigan cars runs FAR worse than Ohio cars...
and guess what? My car is a Michigan car......
Personally, I wouldn't worry about saving that car. Just drive it until you find something better.
^^^ what he said. that car is rough. good beater, but there would be so much work involved to get it right it'd take a thick wallet to be nice. if you like to take the challenge of cutting out rust, fixing dents or replacing fenders etc. go ahead, its a lot of work which i would apreciate if i saw that same car lookin good. i mean it's very decent it just has some problems that makes it a beater IMO.
its not even rough............. a beater is something with lots of major rust, runs like shiznit, drives like shiznit, but still moves. that is far from a beater. you should see what my friends drive around before you call that a beater!
heh im used to a 2000 elantra gls 5spd being a beater... (in 2000) to me a beater is a car that you just drive. not a pos that you drive. basically a daily driver IMO is a beater, b/c it gets beat on on a daily basis. imo thats where the name beater comes from.
but what if you just drive a 2007 gt500 as a daily, its not a beater. its all opinion.
nah, still a beater b/c it gets beat on a daily basis. its like having your tbird for shows and cruisin and what not, while you drive your escort to work. you see, if your driving it to work, and you live more than 12 miles from work, whatever your driving is a beater. the milage kills a cars value, so even if you drive that gt500 every day, everyday your putting miles and miles and miles and miles on it. making it worth less and less day by day. but yeh, i guess you could throw it in the opinion basket.
My TC has 178,6xx miles on it. Is it a beater?
depends, is it your daily driver? if not it was at one time a beater IMO, but if you take care of it and dont put 5,000-10,000 miles on it a year (the average in atlanta) then its not a beater anymore.
i dont understand your logic......
So what about the people that take their cars on the Hot Rod Power Tour and put more than 5000 miles on their car in a year? Are their cars beaters?
Well basically his logic is if you drive your car everyday(no matter how well you take care of it) then the car is a beater. Oh and if you have the slightest bit of rust it is a beater too.
ok first off, your supposed to take care of a car, beater or not. wow. look at it this way.
it comes down to what you use it for... DD? BEATER. garage kept and looked after like a hawk... NOT A BEATER.
Beater. As defined by Wiki.
/thread
^^^ +1eleventybillion
See thats just it, to me(and it seems most others here) a beater is a car that has
not been well taken care of that is used as a DD or even just for winter. As far as i am concerned just cause you buy a car that hasnt been taken care of before you get it doesnt make it a beater if you plan on fixing it. I would love to find a cheap car that was someone elses beater and fixing them.
ah ok, well your logic and wikipedia has the logic that a car that looks like shiznit is a beater. the thunder bird, no offense to the owner, looks like a mess. dents and rust from every angle. i guess i have to make this as dumb as possible. you drive it daily, your ruining your car with milage and everything else the road throws at you.
Well, cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed, and I do just that with my car. I take it for what it is, a $300 in good mechanical condition.
On a side note... I never thought tailpipes would be so hard to install... though I think 99% of the problem is I think the lers were mounted too far forward on the car by the shop I took it to...
I hate that way of thinking. I don't care if i owned the rarest car in the world i would still drive it whenever i wanted to.
Cars are made to be driven The other day on a show(dont remember what it was right now though)they were at a big show(I think it was the Year One show) and
everybody they talked to said they drive their cars.
The last guy said:
"If you see my car on a trailer, call 911 because it has been stolen"
if my cars on a trailor its not street legal ;) not stolen. yeh i agree cars are meant to be driven, but come on guys, you dont drive your prize possession (unless its newer than 1995) against the elements. thats what the beater is for. im sure you guys up north with all the salt dont drive your birds in that . at least i hope you dont.
I drive my "prize possession" when and where I want. And belive you me, just because it has rock chips and 178,000 miles doesn't mean it's a "beater".
:birdsmily:
I started rubbing out the paint on the car, heres just a little bit of the progress, gives you an idea of how that mach 1 paint really should look.
also got the tailpipes on. the looks are nothing fancy, its all about function here. no fancy chrome tips or anything like that, yet. the drives side pipe needs to be moved towards the outside edge an inch or two. I also think they stick out a little too far. Id like them to exit right at the bottom of the bumper.
I think i might wash it today and really get to work on bringing back that paint. The back of the car is all oily from my leaking rear end cover. I need to get the gasket for it... apparently RTV doesnt work.
Lookin good. Glad to see some progress :) .
You're alone in that one, buddy. No one else defines Beaters by being driven daily. That's why we have the term Daily Driver. :)
My Tbird is my Daily Driver. It's not the cleanest car around nor is it garage kept, but it is washed A LOT and I surely wouldnt call it a beater.
I drive my Cougar against the elements, and it is in pristine shape except for two dings, and needs a tune up. If you guard your car in a garage like a hawk and dont drive it, then you are wasting a car. A beater is a car that is like what daboss said. Rusty, barely runs, but still moves. My truck is not a beater no matter how much i drive it, the Cougar gets driven just as much, I treat the truck nicer when driving because it has to get me from A to B everyday. Mileage doesnt ruin cars, dumb drivers do. If you take care of your care, no matter the road conditions it will last. I'll drive the Cougar year round, and can keep it in the same condition. Test me.
I love a debate spuppiesed from someone pictures. Great way to hijack a thread.
yup
More new pics, got a lot of the paint rubbed out really nice.
New exhaust clip too.

Looks AMAZING now
That looks really good. That is no beater. I've had my share of beaters when I was young. I've had people drooling over my yellow 86', but most of the time the car feels like junk to me, but, after driving around with a brand new Mach1 for a few years, and now a brand new F150XLTSupercab, yes, anything 15 years or older will feel like a beater if it needs a little work. Trust me, it's no beater. I think you may want to change your choice in terms from "beater", to "used". After driving new for a few years it does spoil you. There are cars out there allot older, rustier, and need more work than allot of our cars, and yet, if it's the right car, will go for more money than most of us make in a year. And another note to you spoiled :hick: southern car drivers, it is so wierd, we were sitting at AppleBee's in southern Louisiana, and I tried to find one, but even the beaters down there have no rust on em' (This was before Katrina mind you). I saw one old toyata w/a small amount of rust driving by, after 1 half hour of heavy traffic. It's JUST NOT FAIR!!!:shakehead
Holy shiznite! Day and night, man. That is anything but a beater. Keep her and keep her clean.
A "beater" is simply a matter of perspective same as "classic".
I remember 20 years ago my father telling me stories of taking his "beater" out in a field and jumping stumps with it when he was a kid.
It was a 32 Deuce Coupe (http://"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:1932_Ford_Deuce_Coupe_Hot_Rod.jpg"):flame:
Heres some more "beaters", depending on who ya talk to.
