Title: Back from the track! Times and stats pg 2!
Post by: kingcars on May 31, 2007, 11:14:56 PM
Tomorrow I plan to go to the local 1/8th mile track and do a couple of runs.  Dad is coming with me and I'm hopin he'll do a run or two also (and maybe shoot a vid of my run).  Any tips for me since I've never raced before?  I do know how to stage, though :) .

Nonetheless, hopefully tomorrow night when I get back, I'll post the times and take pics of the slips.

I think it'd be fun for everyone to take a guess at what my best time will be, then see who's the closest.  Whoever wins gets an internet cookie from me!  :D

My guess (ps - I have no clue):  10.2 @ 71mph

10.50@72

I assume 60's will be in the 2.59 range hence the extra MPH

Yeah I figure my 1/4 (converted) ET should be anywhere from a mid 15 to a low 16, which is right where you all seem to be pointing right now.  My guess converts to 15.91 @ 88.04.  It's gonna be interesting to see where she lands :) .

10.34 @ 72.5MPH

My bird ran a 9.53 @ 74.6, which was a 14.79 @ 93MPH

Yeah...I'm gonna be manually shifting into 2nd so I can hold it out to about 5k instead of letting the auto shift at 4500.  Hopefully that'll help a tad.  I just hope she doesnt bog on me...that would be terrible.

pull as much weight out as you can(seats, spare tire) and pull the pass  side marker off, to get a "ram air" effect into the airbox. since its 1/8th mile, id pull the belt off right before you go into the burnout box, then put it back on when you turn off the track. dont do a john force burnout on street tires. in fact, i wouldnt recommend doing a burnout at all on street tires. also pump your front tires up to around 40psi, for less rolling resistance.

Yeah, I'm not planning on doing a burnout, especially since I've never done one hahaha.  Thanks for all the tips!  I'm also hoping that me weighing only about 100lbs will help too haha.  But what belt are you talking about?

I would recommend against taking the belt completely off, just run a "short belt" that bypasses the power-steering and air-pump(if still equipped)...those are probably the two biggest parasitic loads.

My car ran pretty consistent 15.30's when I first swapped the HO in...still with the 2.73 open rear at the time...Set your timing to 14* base and put some 91 octane in it.

I wouldn't shift into 2nd that high...I always shifted mine at 4700 from first to second and around 5100 from 2nd to 3rd...seemed to trap better with the higher shift point from 2nd to 3rd.  If you HAVE to go through the water box(like you do here at ATCO) then all you want to do is spin the tires enough to dry them.

I'll have to experiment with the shift points.  The only prob with bumping the timing is that I'm pretty far from running the tank down so putting in 91 Octane wont do any good; I'd have to drive another good 150-180 miles or so to dry out the tank.  I'll run everything by dad, though, and see.  I'm not sure we're gonna get really serious about getting every thousandth of a second and I know we dont have any shorter belts or anything, so I dont know what all we'll do.  My biggest worry is that she's gonna do that stupid bog  and limp off the line.

Well guys, the Tbird ran great tonight and we pulled off some good times.  I did two passes and dad did two passes.  I did my passes when it was a bit hotter out; dad went out a bit later and it had cooled off quite a bit.  Stats are as follows:

My 1st run stats:

60ft:  2.375
E/T:  10.291
MPH:  72.591

My 2nd run stats:

60ft:  2.429
E/T:  10.308
MPH:  73.082

Dad's 1st run stats:

60ft:  2.347
E/T:  10.146
MPH:  73.322

Dad's 2nd run stats:

60ft:  2.35
E/T:  10.162
MPH:  73.153

For the contest, I won closest E/T and 1WLD BRD got the closest mph.  Heres your cookie!  :D

Also, you guys should know that we did NOTHING to the car.  We just drove it there and ran it.  I'm sure bumping the timing and a few other odds and ends could get the Tbird close to the 9s.  Running the car has helped us pinpoint the bogging problem too, because during both my runs she was idling just like she does when she bogs, but I floored it and she launched great both times (even with a chirp of the tires) so there was obviously no bogging going on.  So thanks to that info, we're pretty sure it's a TPS problem.

As dad and I were chillin out, a man and his son came up and told us about their 85 Tbird 5.0, so I wrote down this site and told them to check it out, so we'll hopefully have a new member here soon. :)

All in all, dad and I had a blast and we're definitely going again.

I'll take pics of the time slips too, if anyone would like :) .  I'm sure Aerobird would like this info for his top 25 thread.

And I hope 32V is happy now!!!!  hahaha

Yeah right after dad did his last run, we started talking about how to break into the 9s :D .  I think next time we go, we're gonna take his 85 T/A to see how it compares.  Our reaction times suck though, but I'm sure we'll improve.

Oh, and while we were waiting in the staging lanes, the kid next to us was revving his riced out Honda Accord.  Turns out thats who dad was lined up against on his first run, and dad blew him away.  That kid ran an 11.0 and dad ran a 10.14.

Good for 19th overall, 7th on the small block n/a list, and 21st on the 60' list.
