Anyone familiar with the liquid fan clutch operation? How tight should the fan be when the engine is warmed up? Lately, the temp gauge needle is heading into territory I do not like--and it is not even summer yet. I see no other obvious problems and noted comments on threads here about the fan clutch. Yes, this clutch is 19 years old. Tonight--upon arrival home I checked the fan--engine off--and the blades could be spun without resistance. Somehow that doesnt seem right, but I would not know the difference, frankly. And yes, I replaced the thermostat last week--no difference. Thanks.
On mine, there is *some* resistance but none, that sounds bad. I think got a few spair fans if ya need one
i would try running the motor then putting your hand back by the firewall to feel the airflow. then rev it up to the same rpms you see while cruising, and see if the airflow slows down.
Its in my DIY link,,, but,,,,,,,
With a bone cold motor, you shold not be able to spin that fan no more than a 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn no matter if you played football or lift weights.
if you wait too long, you can find out that the clutch will wobble on the shaft,,(like i did once) and eventually you will next find that your radiator got disected:evilgrin:
now,, to make a fan clutch a solid fan,, simply remove one of the bolts that mates the fan blade system to the clutch. Install a longer bolt. You will crush the clutch system in the clutch and put it in a bind, therefore making it a solid fan for increased cooling (for emergency use only of course:hick: )
Sounds like a personal problem.
Well here's the scoop=
Bought a new clutch tonight and put it on. Not too bad of a job considering you have to work the fan out of the shroud. I found the old clutch face front to be crudded up with oily soot--which by feel was silicone--so I am almost sure this was the problem--see picture. I started and ran the engine and the air rush sound at the front of the engine was almost deafening. I look forward to learning of the result tomrrow. I will report here. :D
ill let my people take care of you:flame:
Thanks Scott.... I just spit pop all over the computer. Kitty assissin!!!
yeah,, that one is a "right clicker, save as'er"
