Title: 351 swap needs headers HELP
Post by: Wheelman - JoZeF on May 25, 2007, 04:22:15 PM
hey you guys..ive recently swapped in a 351w in my 87 t-bird, and space is at an unbelievable premium now, the steering rod is more or less leaning on the mustang stock headers..i know this has been asked before here on this forum but i never found an answer. i would like long tube headers, and i would like to know if i get the 351 swap headers for a stang would they fit directly? the exhaust is a custom h-pipe no problem i can adjust that..

thanks for your time in advance..oh and the car has a t5 on it..

i know summit sells 351w swap headers for mustangs.. and i'm also pretty sure you have to swap to a mustang K-member in order for them to clear correctly.

will it clear? because it is very tight in there..and you guys are talking about long tubes right? would there be a big difference in performance/sound between shorty headers and long tubes?

yep, long tubes. and as for the difference, from what i was told.. the the tubes give you more top end power, and shortys are good for low end torque. but i'm not sure if the kid was right. i'll have to find out later today

They should clear just fine, they are the same basic chassis and
k members etc swap with negligable differances.

hopefully they will,im about to run into some cash and ill get those from summit. The problem is that i have to run an international order..with next day shipping and express and all those expediting services ill still get it after 3 weeks, and it would be a MAJOR pain if i have to ship them back because they dont fit, this is why ive been worried. Thanks for the help you guys, if anyone else wants to chime in i would appreciate it, i need this encouragement =p

one more question, on The Corral forums many people say that the quality of MAC headers are ,is that something i should go by and just stick to BBK's? thanks for the help in advance =)

to tell you the truth, i don't know anyone that has ever used BBK or MAC. I've used HEDMEN and FlowTech and they both work great. they're even made specifically for tbirds/cougars.

oh really?  you must have some demented love affair with thier dumb ass  design.  i had to pinch off the tubing in order to go with a decent bolt rather then those stupid ass 10mm bolt heads they recommend.

and headman does not like to use good quality paint either,,, it burns off on the first few passes to the grocery store.  "high temp heat treated paint" my ass.

right here in the engine swap section, you can expand to see all threads by selecting the options at the bottom of the page.  As it is now, this page loads with only a few threads by default.  just click on the option that lets you see all threads or atleast all threads in the past year.

there are several 351w swaps posted.

I had MAC shorty headers on my '87 Sport and they rusted out in less than two years. The seams in the tubes split and I ended up having to install stock Mustang shorties to get through safety inspection (any exhaust leak will fail). I was quite disgusted...

i did look through the older threads but it didnt say too much about long tube swap headers..i have a 10.3:1 cr 393, and i am choking the  out of it with the mustang stock shorties as a temporary solution..

i had no problem with the  on either of them. and as for the paint, i wouldn't know.. i sand blasted mine and used VHR header paint or whatever it's called. problem solved

I have 351W with T5 in 88 TC. I am using BBK ceramic coat Mustang swap headers for approximately 5 years now with no problem from leaks or fit. It is a PITA to get them in place as steering column shaft goes through the pipes between 7 & 8, I think.
