Title: Miata
Post by: P71 on May 21, 2007, 09:05:12 PM
I've had a hankering for a Miata for awhile now. Difference is now I'm actually test-driving them! :hick:

I'd love me a Soltice GXP Turbo (260HP, sub 2500 Lb car) but they're new and $$$. I like old, previously loved, cheap stuff. I found a 93 in Blue for $4400 that's cherry. Do I resist, or is it futile? How long till it's turbo'd? How long till a 2.3T goes in? Or the AMC 401?

More importantly, where do I put it?

i love thoes cars. almost bought one in 90 but didn't. just like an mgb but reliable. if i had one i would put a 2.3 all aluminum dohc out of a 02 or newer ranger with a turbo. although there is a kit to put a 5.0 in it. how bout a world products aluminum 5.0 w/ twin turbos?

If you buy it, I would try and keep it in its cherry stock condition.  I don't see too many 1st gen Miatas in that color and in good shape.

LSx fits! Hmm, all-aluminum 364 ci V8, 400HP/400TQ stock, 2200Lb car with engine, 6-Speed. Can you say Cobra?

The LS7 Soltice is a bad-@$$ but WAY out of my league! A cheap little LS1 Miata with some mods or a turbo (cause I'm good like that ;) ) would be 95% of the performance for 5% of the price.

Visit Monstermiata.com, they sell a complete kit to install a 5.0 t5 swap complete with brakes, springs and all the handling goodies to run with Vettes and Porche's Anyone been watching the show Gears with Stacey David? He is doing the complete car, very cool

5.0 weighs too much, even with aluminum heads. Stacey's is way cool, but it's not nearly light enough. Not to mention n/a it would be running in "B" Class, with up to 2.5L turbo cars (think modded STI's and EVO's). With a blower/turbo it's stuck in "A" with ZO6's, Ferrari's, etc. AN any LSx cars, with or without boost. A 500+ whp all-aluminum LSx would rock ANY car, but an aluminum 2.5 or less 4-popper (or that 13B, mmmm) would be the ticket for competitive auto-xing. Maybe an S2000 motor with a turbo?

The KA24DE in my truck is all-aluminum, but it's more gutless then the Miata's 1.6 .

I like where you are going with this.  Haha, as the resident LS1 guy on the board now, I was going to suggest it, but hey, great minds think alike... ;)

For $4000 you can buy a complete kit to put a 5.0 in one.  0-60 in 4.6 sec and 12sec 1/4 times with a stock HO.

Thats what I wanna do.

EDIT:  nvm, dad beat me to it...

Is this a Duratec or based on the ol' pinto 2.0L? I can't find sweet  all on this motor, other than it came in late model Rangers and has a stupid frickin plastic engine cover!!!

I've had a hankering for a Miata for awhile now....

.... Or the AMC 401?

With an 8/71 and duel 850CFMs...

And you could tub the rear and put put some HUGE assed rubber in there....

Oh... Oh... And a 50lb nitrous bottle on fog and injected...

And...

And...

Nah, it'd never work.

I don't think I'd ever V8 a Miata. It sounds cool but would ruin the character of the car, IMO. Miatas aren't about straight line acceleration, they're about being nimble. Now, a 2.3 turbo pounding out in the neighbourhood of 300 horses would certainly be intriguing...

actually with a few suspension mods a V8 miata will handle quite well thank you.

IRON V8's ruin the Miata. The motor HAS to be light. A fully dressed AMC 401 is around 600 Lbs so that's a big fat hell no. 302/5.0 isn't musch better. The 2.3T sounds fun, but it's too heavy as well as too tall to clear the hood.

Turboing the Miata motor is good. Or slapping in a turbo ECOTEC from a Soltice/Sky ($$$). My personal favorites are a 13B rotary (turbo or N/A, either way sounds wicked) or an LS1/T56. The rotary sounds like more fun but the LSx would be a Cobra killer. Decisions, decisions...

BTW, a 4.6 (SOHC or DOHC) will physically not fit without cutting out the shock towers and framerails, forget that!

Didn't realize there was that much room in those cars. Could something like this possibly be the best performance/fuel economy ratio? I could see 30-35mpg highway and 25mpg city with the stock 5.0HO/miata combo (going off my car's 20/33 at weight=hellofalot). Good DD/commuter. This thread intrigues me, even if I don't ever plan on owning one. Always interesting to read/see.

Go buy a Z3 or Z4 BMW body kit and stuff a 5.0 under the hood.
