The time has unfortunately come that I need to part with my baby: my 88 Turbo Coupe 5.0. But the problem is, after putting roughly $9,000 into it I can't decide... would I be better off parting it out or selling it outright? Here's the lowdown:
- Maroon 88 TC, power windows, locks, mirrors, drivers seat, cruise control, premium sound
- 89 Mustang 5.0 (90k, refreshed from heads up at 89k), plus all new sensors, water pump, etc...
- BBK Ceramic coated shorties (1 5/8 primaries) in BBK H-pipe, Flowmaster 40 Series lers
- Aeromotive Fuel Pressure Regulator
- K&N conical filter
- 89 Mustang T5, only 20k miles, MGW shifter, King Cobra clutch on new flywheel
- 89 Mustang Wiring, computer, custom wired into TC harnesses (removing a TON of unused wiring) - throws no codes like a lot of converted TC's do
- Mustang pedal assembly with summit clutch cable
- 140 mph speedo
- New Headlights
- Griffin aluminum radiator with elec fan (and temp switch)
- All new A/C plumbing and components (needs to be charged)
- New fog lights
- Viper 600HF alarm system
- 95 Cobra R wheels - 17x9 - 5 wheels and tires to have a full sized spare
- 94 Mustang spindles, hubs
- 98 Cobra Master Cylinder, new cobra calipers, crossdrilled rotors, stainless lines, for motorsport proportioning valve
- 88 Mustang Booster
- 86 Lincoln Mark VII axels and brakes (11.65" discs I believe), new calipers and rotors on stock 8.8 with 3.55 and posi
- Awesome interior, stock premium sound system
- Custom rotary heater panel from 93 mustang (in stock heater panel location to prevent blockage from future added flip up navigation)
- New shocks and struts
Downsides:
A very small bit of rust on the bottom of the drivers side door, a bit of bubbling/rust (about 1x3") on top of passenger back wheel lip - under the paint, passenger door needs new pins? (door sags a bit), passenger back corner has a gash in it (1x4") from a 5th wheel trailer hitting it (have replacement taillight), parking brakes cables and cruise servo need to be replaced...
It's in overall great condition but I just can't decide if I'd be better off parting it or selling it. I'd hate to part it and then see a perfectly amazing 88 TC die, but I also can't not get what I need to get $$$ wise from it. What do you guys think? Here are some pics (passenger side is fine, just didn't want to pull it out into the rain to get pics on that side...also, it doesn't really have 140,000+ miles on it, just the speedo)...
Here's pics:

that works !!!!
Other than the blemishes, that is a sweet looking TC. I hope you can sell it whole.
Thanks a million Ether. I was so pissed when the car got hit in the back. It's SO close to being absolutely amazing (couple fixes and what not) and is so fun to drive. I really hope I can sell it whole for the right price as well because another 'bird lover deserves this car! I'm really gonna miss it...
if you can sell that for $9,000 i wonder whats mine's worth.
Not a bad car lots of work done to it i'd pay around $8-10,000 only cuz i know how much of pain it is to swap all that stuff out.
Nice ride shame its gotta go
Wow that is a nice car. I'd pick it up in a heartbeat if I had the money.
Ha! you're telling me it's a shame! This was the first I car I bought and it's been quite a few years to where it is now! And if I could get 9000 I'd be happy, too! I think we're still a few years from everyone really realizing the value of these ever rarer cars...
But anyway, thanks for the support and input... glad there are so many broke t'bird lovers like me that would like the car but have no money! LOL
I want it too! I'll trade you my truck for it, and Im not even joking.
Why are you selling?
Need to focus on my music career... not only am I putting to much time and money into upgrades, changes, cruising etc... which you all know never ends... but I need something that I'm not afraid to dump my gear in to get to shows. Hopefully prioritizing now will let me have another TC in the future...
I hate to be a realist, but I'm pretty sure unless you find the right person, you'll never get that kind of money for it. I'd almost have to say someone on this board would have to get it. It's a shame too, since it's such a good looking well put together car. I hope you really do find a good home for it, and that it gets to stay whole.
What kind of music vehicle? I actually might be able to help you there on a title swap...
Hey DakotaEpic, I never actually put a price, I'm actually on here trying to figure that out. Some other people have just mentioned a few things... but youre right it's gonna be tough.
As for a vehicle for getting around, I'm not really sure... I may just use my girlfriends car for a while until I figure things out... that may just work for the time being. I haven't really thought much past that. But as far as a swap, I'm really hoping to sell/part instead and come out with some money on top... not so much JUST a car to get to shows and work.
As much as you like music the aerobirds sound great with a sound system in them. Where all broke so keep it my T-bird is my 1st car i want a 1997-1998 mark 8 LSC but i would not trade my car for one so i gotta wait a year or 2 to get one.
I have a 1998 GMC Sonoma. I'll trade. I have replacement Intake gaskets. Thats all it needs done. It just pissed me off so its sitting right now, because I dont want to work on it.
Sorry cougrrr302, not exactly the outcome I'm looking for... even though you sound like a great owner for it.
I hope someone planning on swapping a 302 into a TurboCoupe see's this first. There's no need to do it again if it's already for sale.
Instead of selling the thing perhaps you should just look into putting a hideaway hitch on it and buying a little enclosed trailer to pull behind it. I think that would really be the best route to go instead of selling something like that which you've put so much effort into.
Not really a place for a trailor and having it still makes we want to put more money into it and/or cruise and go out which I can't afford right now... idk, I'm still toying with it all. just kinda weighing my options I guess.
DONT PART IT, its to nice for that!!!
Hahaha, I know... I'm working on it!
And I'd love someone with 5.0 TC plans in mind to find it, too. I love the ride and am SO happy with the 5.0 but if I had another I'd probably keep the 2.3 just for the originality factor...
Honestly, Id keep it.
While im not trying to get anywhere with a music career, I know music can get frustrating, and you need something to clear your mind.
Cars are my thing, but I need something else. Id get frustrated, and pick up my guitar, hop on my bike, call the girlfriend, or something like that. Not to mention, its hard to progress at music when you have a lot on your mind, and cant clear it.
Id keep the car, I dont know what you play, or your style of music, but these birds can be quite versitile...unless you play drums.
Seems to me you're looking at it a little backwards. Why not find a enclosed trailer to haul your music stuff with the bird? If your sick of the car or something that's different. On the other hand you can set the bird up for towing. There's no reason to let go of your investment. Then again, with gas prices inching up  a V-8 daily has to have a cause. You know, cause this, cause that, cause I like it. Remember your personal standards must be maintained!;) No matter the cost. That's what my brother-in-law keeps telling himself ... about his gas guzzling SUV.
:dunce:
thanks Jonathan... that has been suggested, just don't have room for a trailer... nor the cash to make it all happen... LOL
So I'm assuming there isn't some other vehicle you could spare?
If he had a second vehicle...do you think he'd have started this thread?
It really is a bad situation you're in...it looks like you really have spent your time making a very nice ride, it's unfortunate because 9.9 out of 10 times, you never get your money back. Most of the time, you're lucky if you can get half of it back. Sometimes parting is the answer, but it would be ashame to see that thing ripped apart.
However, if you do decide to part, let me know about the speedo.
Goodluck,
Don
