Title: Turbo Options
Post by: tc² on April 30, 2007, 04:06:13 PM
I'm getting an '86 TC.  I already have a Garrett/AiResearch .60/.63 T3.  Would it be beneficial to put the newer turbo on power-wise, or would there be no difference?  Thanks

If the factory one is in good shape, theres no benefit.

The other thing to consider, if youre going FMIC, your new turbo might have a more ideal compressor housing. Does the new T3 have the d compressor housing, or the one for the intercooler hose to slip over?

The new T3 is d, the car has an '87 intercooler so that one has the one where the hose that slips over.  And yes, I want to go to a front mount  .  You are good 232ci...

If you have a d housing you can just grind it down to a round outlet with a die grinder and carbide cutter. That's what I did, it's not perfectly round, but once you put a rubber coupler on there and tighten it down, it won't leak.

Thats what I did with the T3 I put on my '87.  The FMIC's have the couplers that slip over the turbo, not bolt up, correct?

Well, you can buy little elbows that bolt on to the outlet and give you a 90 degree outlet, but they're hard to find nowadays.

Otherwise, yeah it's easiest to just put a coupler on there.
