i thought it was 1996 when the bronco ended, but today at work i saw a 1998 explorer with a 5.0!!!!! i had to take a double glance, then go back to the paperwork to see the year again. it was pretty cool, allthough it looks nothing like my 5.0 from 86.
2001 in the Explorer/Mountaineer.
It has GT40 heads and a variant of the GT-40 intake for Explorer use. :)
off topic but still a 5.0 question. what head casting did they use in 84 and would the gt-40 and e7 heads bolt up without any problem?? and has anyone done this?
I'm not 100% postive but ford kept running the line for the 5.0 block for a while after they stopped putting them in cars. They may actually still be manufacturing them, but somehow I don't believe they are.
Cougar8775. They'll bolt on, but you may or may not need different pushrods, lifters, etc.
You got that right... Summit Racing carried the 5.0 bare block up till a couple years ago. Supplies are gone, only the HP 5.0 blocks are still available.
As I recall, a bare 5.0 block was pretty ed cheap from Summit, too. Under $500.
In contrast, they also once had a 426 hemi longblock for sale for... $16k?
The 5.0 blocks started out at $279, increased to $299, then $329....
I think they still carry the HEMI....
Sheesh, if only I'd have been able to get one. Then again, building up from a bare block is costly as opposed to rebuilding a complete engine.
I know ford racing still sells long blocks and short blocks, and that summit has a few of them, but not many. It would be cool to get ahold of one of the aluminum 5.0 blocks for kick and giggles.
ok so those type of heads will bolt up so what is special bout the pushrods rocker arms becides them possibly being rollers? different leingth pushrods??? and what casting of heads are on the 84 5.0??
'84 I'd guess would be an E4SE. Nothing special, you should just replace them when you do heads. Right along with checking pison-to-valve clerance.
just about any small block ford heads bolt up, with a few exceptions, and pushrod length may vary depending on roller/non roller and the cam etc, but im not 100% on the pushrods
now the 1 million dollar question. where can i find engine specs on all 5.0's made and different head variations?
well here is what i found in one of my books tell me if im right or wrong. valve lift spex. 302...1983-88 intake (.3753) exaust (.3909) 302 ho 1984-85 intake (.4130) exaust (.4420)
valve timing (intake poens before TDC) 302 exc ho 1983-88 16 degrees
valve clearence 302 intake .096 exaust .146 302 ho .123 .264
now am i correct or no?
well, thats the wrong information, thats mostly cam information, telling what lifr you get and the clearance with that specific cam
there isnt many complete pages with head information on 5.0's
