Title: Dialing in the Edelbrock
Post by: 84 Fila on April 28, 2007, 06:05:25 PM
A few questions on turning the carb.... Like what is the base settings for an Edelbrock 600 CFM Manual choke? Then what is a good idle speed to set it at? And anything else I don't know because I'm learning as I go here

Depending on the cam you should be good about 600-800 with auto.

Sounds good. Not about what is the " red line" for this motor? Just enjyoung the cam yesterday, got it to about 3500 then it stopped pulling. I think it's about 4500 but not sure. Just don't wana over rev

The camshaft in your motor is doing that.  My 83 falls flat on its face at about that rpm.

with a bone cold motor,,,,,,,,,

rotate fuel/air screws CW until they stop.
back both CCW three turns.

loosen choke screws
rotate choke until the trottle plates start to move open.
tighten choke setting screws

settings vary from who you talk to.

Either way, I'll try it. I'm guessing blind, and the edelbrock website only tells how to fine tune, not a "base" setting. I'll give it a try though. Thanks so far guys

i have a holley750 street avenger and an eldebrock 600.  No two like model/make carbs tune the same.  Nor will you tune a carb on one motor and install it on the same model / make motor and have it run the same.

you gotta tweek according to feel / sound / smell / sight.  Thats all i can tell you other than pick up a dwell meter and learn how to use that to although i do own one and have used it, i have not come to depend on it so maybe its a waste.

In my experience, Eldebrock is more user friendly (bolt on turn key)  but has more moving parts than the holley.  I guess the holley is simpler but you cant let em sit.

With a carb of those sizes, your heads and air passages make or break your specific reline, more specifically the cam.  Your falling out at 4.5k,, that aint right to me.  Sounds like you have the same problem i currently have.
Cam is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much for what i did and i cant say i wasnt told so.

hopefully i can start my project back up again here soon.

Umm, Scott... it's the stock cam. I just need a guess for the base setting. After I figure out this  coil thing I should be rockin out on the carb

Title: check secondary link
Post by: t.birdsc on May 03, 2007, 12:32:25 AM
On the edlebrock/carter style carb. watch for the secondary link getting flipped upside down. If the link gets flipped over the secondarys wont fully open. Found out the hard way after getting a proform 750. At least the non holleys dont backfire through the carb. Always got to mess with holleys. Thank God for fuel injection!
