Title: What would you give up your Bird/Cat for?
Post by: P71 on April 27, 2007, 01:03:50 AM
Carm's thread and a discussion over Overhaulin tonight brought me to this. Is there a car you would actually give up your fox for? Especially guys like us with highly modified ones or just ones we've had forever? Sure there's Ferrari's and what not, I mean an actual obtainable car? Like a specific one?

When I was 14 I was just learning to drive. My dad had a 1970 AMC Javelin Mark Donahue Edition. I helped him build the 360 when I was 13, it made 380rwhp. This car was his daily driver (he still has his 68 AMX 390 4-Speed, 11.40's n/a, since he was 15) and it was the second coolest car I had ever known (behind his AMX). It was an original Red/Red car (see, NOW you hear the truth :D ) but it had been repainted to match the Red/White/Blue Trans Am cars. It was loud, it was fast, and it had "the look". Anyways on my over the summer for my first "official" drive we were at Daytona International Speedway for a HUGE car show (Spring Spectacular, THOUSANDS of cars) and this was back when you could still drive ON the track. We pull up to the entrance and my dad hopped out of the Javelin and said "Drive it". He got in the passenger side and we were off! I drove onto the track and 3/4 of the way around the oval to Victory Lane where they shoot a photo. That was the coolest day of my life. Yes, I still have the photo ;)

He had to sell it the next summer to rebuild the engines in his airplane (1964 Twin Cessna 310I, a fast-@$$ plane) and it went to California. I saw it later that year when I was on vacation, real nice guy bought it. He restored it back to Matador Red/Red but left the drivetrain alone. These pics aren't THE car, but you get the idea. This is the only car I'd ever give up Layla for. DO you have one?

I can't think of anything that would make me want to give up my '86 TC.  Waaaaaaay too many memories and it was my first "functioning" car.  Probably only if someone offered a Torino Talladega strait up....

Nice cars Aerobird. I would have liked that Blue 86' w/a 460 that was on e-bay a few months back.

When I finished high school I had an 83 Bird which although it wasnt my first car was my first new car ( I had a 61 Bird) I traded it and got a corvette.  Just what your average 17 year old needs. Fun car didnt get into trouble with it(much). That was one of only 2 Chevys I have ever owned. After getting it I saw my old bird a few times and watched it fall into disrepair.

Right now there is nothing short of a Ferrari I would trade it for. Ok, maybe a Pantera GT5-S but it would have to be perfect.

I'd go stright up for any older mustang V8 ( 64-70) But the car would have to go to a good home. Not just anyone.

I wouldn't trade the '88 for the world... I'm planning to be buried in it.
The '86 on the other hand, I'd trade for my '76 Camaro back. Sure it was a mullet mobile but that car was the only car that stayed throughout my life. I have fond memories of my grandfather and I going out in it and then of him giving it to my sister a year before he died. Her and I always had fun in it and it was next being given to me. Unfortunately there was too much body rot and it wasn't worth fixing. I held onto that car for 10 years before coming to that realization and sold it last summer.
Of course to trade the '86 for it, the Camaro would have to be in better condition than it was when I sold it.

I always used to say I'd trade my car for an 87-88 Cougar XR-7 or 20th, , a four-eye V8 or TC 'Bird, an 87-88 5-speed TC, or an 88-92 Mark VII, but that was before I actually invested time into modifying it. This is the first car I'd ever actually done any of the things I wanted to do with all of my other cars. I've grown quite an emotional attachment to it.

Truth be told, I don't think I'd ever get rid of it now. I mean, obviously if some fool came along and offered me a '69 Boss 429 even trade I'd jump on it, or even an '05+ convertible Mustang GT I'd be all over it - let's face it, money talks, and I'd be a fool to not accept a car worth several times what mine is worth - but we all know that isn't going to happen. The fact is my car's paid for, so there will never be any reason to sell it. Even if I did sell it, it wouldn't take a big enough dent out of the price of any car I'd want to replace it with to make it worth selling anyway. If I ever took it upon myself to buy an 87 Anny, 87-88 XR7, 84-86 V8 or TC Bird, or 88-92 Mark VII I'd just buy it outright and park it next to my car.

Only thing about me trading mine is Even if I did get the stang I wanted, I'd still end up gettin another bird/cat. They are just too addicting

Yeah, I dont think I'd ever get rid of my Tbird for a few reasons:

It's my first car.
It's awesome.
I basically see it as the car version of me.

Also, I'd like to share an interesting tidbit.  My dad's parents always dreamed about getting a Thunderbird.  I'm named after my dad's dad...and my first car is a Tbird?  Sure, it's not the same car they had dreamt about, but still a coincidence?

No other car can replace what this car means to me.  I wont trade the car; if somebody wants to sell me something, I'll just buy it.  I remember when my ex-neighbor was showing me pics of him and his wife getting married in his 67 Chevelle (he had the car since day 1 and still has it today) and that really inspired me.

If I could only fit one finger in it then the car would be gone.

Without a doubt, this:

1961 Corvette in Jewel Blue, a one-year-only color, total production of 855, extremely hard to find and fetching quite a price these days. My father owned one in the 1960's after he was in the Air Force. He dated my mom, then they got married, had me...and were forced to sell the car so they could buy the house where I grew up. I always told dad that if I hit the big time, that's the first thing I'd buy for him. Well...LOL...looks like I'll be saving up for another 30-40 years. ;)

Some of us have to much into our rides to let them go. There isn't any way my 84 turbo coupe is going any where. That is unless there is many many many many many stacks of $100. About 10 feet high each. I don't see that ever happening.

I understood.....

Just because some of us don't wet ourselves over over-priced muscle cars or the like, doesn't mean we didn't understand your intention.  Didn't it occur to you that some of us have these cars BECAUSE we like them?  The only car I would give the silver one up for is the silver car in it's final iteration.
Title: What would you give up your Bird/Cat for?
Post by: P71 on April 27, 2007, 11:08:37 AM
It's not that it's an over-priced muscle car (which it's not), it's that it was my DAD's muscle car. I could care less about the OTHER 2,500 Mark Donahue Javelins made, I just want HIS old one. It was the first engine I had a hand in building, the first car I drove, and other fuzzy memories like that. It's THAT SPECIFIC CAR. It could have been a rusty clapped out truck for all I care, it's the MEMORIES I would be after. That is the ONLY car that left the family that I would EVER consider dumping my car for. I'd dump it if it meant getting grandpa's 68 AMX (11K miles, all original, he bought it in 68 new) or my dad's 68 AMX, but those are still in the family and will always stay in the family, so I wouldn't have to. I'm not even saying I would dump it for the Javelin, but if it magically appeared in my driveway and the owner said "Trade you straight up" I'd actually have to think about it.

I'd probably trade mine to any fool who wants to give me something WORTH twice(sellable) what I could build another for(Hey my time is worth money)...

RED TC shutters the thought...

A couple cars I would get rid of both of my TCs for... yes that includes darkthunder. And they are both Stangs.

#1 - 85 Mustang GT w/T-Tops
Actually I would gut the 87 and use the powertrain in the Stang.

#2 - 99-02 Cobra w/Saleen Body Kit
I actually thought long and hard about selling both and using the money as a down payment for one of these a few months back. I just didn't want the increased insurance and a monthly car payment again... at least not until my son starts first grade in two years. We will be in the new house, the wedding will be over and no more friggin daycare! I hope.

Then I'd buy another 83-86 TC for a project car. :D

No one in my family ever had a cool car, or one that I would "love to have back".
Other than my brother, and my nephew on my wife’s side of the family, I'm the only “car guy”. To everyone else on both sides, cars are just transportation devices and they just don't understand why you need more than one.
My parents understand it better now, and one of the reasons is also one of the big issues they had when I bought my Cougar back in 1987. They just didn’t understand why I stored it in the winter. Well, here we are 20 years later….and they certainly understand why I stored it now. ;)

There are many cars that I would want, but if I had to give up my Cougar for another, it would be the car that I have lusted after since it came out in 1978.
A 1993-95 Porsche 928 GTS with a 5-speed.

Nothing can ever take the place as my first car; thats why I never want to get rid of it.  The closest car to it would be my dad's first hot rod - his 67 Fairlane 289.

I understood quite well, but there are no cars in my history that I'd trade the 'Bird for. Sure, I'd love to have my beloved black Bertha back, or a reasonable facsimile, since I know the car has long been crushed (it was my first car, '78 Trans Am, WS6 suspension, LT1 350 installed in place of the original 400) but I wouldn't trade my Thunderbird for it. I'd love to have a '78 Ramcharger to restomod - my father had one and we all loved it, especially on fine days when he'd take the roof off - but I wouldn't give my Thunderbird up for one. I say "Restomod" because I'd love to put the '78 Ramcharger body onto a '94+ 3/4 or 1-ton frame with the cummins. I'd even like to have the '68 Olds 442 my father had that his eyes mist up every time he mentions it, but I have no fond memories of the car because I simply don't remember it (he traded it for a Caprice when I was about 1 year old). There are plenty of cars in my past that I'd like to have, and most of them are worth much more than my Thunderbird (the T/A, the '66 Galaxie 500, to name but two) but I simply don't have the attachment to them that I do to the 'Bird. I dunno if it's sad or not, that I had to wait until I was in my mid 30's before I found "my" car, but that is indeed the case. It's the first car that I had a "vision" for that I'm actually seeing through.

The first "real" car is always the most important, and most of us still have it. If my first TC still existed I'd still have it (T-boned by a red light running drunk into a ditch). Second one too (a tornado threw a roof and a tree on it). Layla's my 3rd out of 32 so I'm doing the best I can :hick:

There are some I want back (my 83 TC, the 87 Code 33 TC) as well as some non-foxes (my 87 RX7) but I wouldn't give up any of the "current" crop for them (well, I'd give up the truck for the 83...). I DO want to find my first truck just for the grins of it, 1986.5 Nissan Hardbody King Cab. VIN #000409 :hick: It was 18 different shades of tan and I airbrushed a HUGE set of tribal flames on it in black/red! That poor truck got me through high school (I didn't get a TC till the first time I went to college). It had 187K when I bought it, the original Z24 dual-plugger and 5-speed put up with a LOT of teenage abuse. Went drag racing, sand duning, road rallying (won 2nd place!!), off-road JUMPING (blew out a tire I landed so hard once), and drug home COUNTLESS cars. It had 268K on it when my dad sold it while I was busy buying Layla (I left it to him when I moved away, I took the SHO). *sigh*

The only vehicle that I would get rid of my cat for is my dad's '71 Mustang fastback. I grew up with that vehicle and when he had to sell it to keep his family in there house, lets just say it took some growing up before I forgave him.

That is the one vehicle I will always want no matter what happens in life.

This is the biggest picture that I have.

In that case it would be the '68 427 GTE Cougar I owned back in '77-'78... They're six figure cars now(fully restored)... Only Cougar I've ever owned, defiantly spoiled me for life on buying Cats...

As far as first car.. Was A '57 Ford SW, don't want it... I'd defiantly swap the Bird for a nice example of my 4th car(or another of my 5th car, the Cobra Jet)... Fourth car was a '64 Galaxie 500 Fastback(a 63 1/2 Fastback would be OK too,  or a '66-'67 Fairlane or Cyclone)... shiznit their's a bunch of stuff I'd swap for...

O.K.,if a Hemi Superbird costs more than a Ferrari,I'll take a Superbird with a 440 4bbl;.That knocks the price way down (still very costly),and I'll still like it.

I have the one car that means the world to me, and thats my mustang. Its been my dads since before i was born, and ive worked on it with him all my life. Its far from perfect, but i wouldn't even trade it for a ferrari. My fondest memory is at like 5 one of the first times i remember him taking me out in the car. I was hooked, the look, the sound, the sheer power it has. Now the lincoln id only trade for something worth wild, its far from perfect, but not for long! I think maybe ill trade my lincoln for a lets say 70 boss 429, or maybe a 1969 yenko camaro, or chevelle, a 66 fairlane, 69 gto judge, 66 olds with a 455, ah a hemi dart, 68 challenger r/t hemi, 69 charger r/t hemi, i could go on for days, one things for sure id rather have any of those in good shape over a new car!

I try and be dispationate towards cars and never get emotionally attached to one. Hell, a spring time Texas thunderstorm could easily total out my 86 with baseball sized hail if I were unlucky enough to be caught out in one... Not to mention all the other Texas road hazards driving around out there.

A few years back (1999) I was just cruising down the road doing about 50 in my black 87 TC (loaded with sunroof)... a drunk driver ran a stop sign and took out the passenger side front 3/4 ahead of the front tire. It sucked but life went on. I stripped all the good TC parts and used them on my Sport. If my 86 gets wiped out by a storm or something I'll do the same thing. It's just alot of work, but life goes on...

So remember, ITS JUST A CAR!

eh, my 'rents had a bunch of junkers while i was growin up. and all my early vehicles were junkers too. and ive heard cool stories about a pair of grand torinos my dad had(one 72, one 75), but none of those "meant" anything to me. the first passionate car memories i have are both fox birds. a few wild rides in a HS kids 85 TC(i was 14), and my 'rents 87 bird(purchsed when i was 13-14 and the car i drove while/after gettin my license).
so no, i wouldnt trade my 87 TC for any other vehicle. it is a mix of my two fox bird memories, and im building it exactly how i want it to be.

'70-'71 are OK, I'm a fan of the '68-'69 body style(course there was no Cobra model in '68)... Ford only got off their ass and did the Cobras after the '68 Road Runner did so well(Was even unexpected for Plymouth)... I believe they projected something like a 10K run, but sold something like 44,000...

My ride would be my dad's '71 Cuda Gran Coupe w/383.  Unfortunately he sold it before I got my license.

My father had several early to mid 70's Gran Torinos, both two and four door. One in particular, a '73, he used to say he could sit in the livingroom, looking out the window, and watch it rust before his eyes :hick: I don't have much in the way of memories of those cars either, as I would've been anywhere from two to five years old. The only memories I have of Gran Torinos at all was seeing teenagers drive 'em as beaters in the early-mid 80's.

I do remember a few others from the early 70's - the big green F250 4X4 that I had to be lifted into and could almost walk under without slouching, and several full sized Cherokees (including the one we were in an accident in while vacationing in Bangor, ME) but again, these aren't particularly fond, or even vivid, memories.

Since the 20th Cougar was a replacement for the musclecars of my childhood, I have no desire to replace it - I much prefer the better chassis of the Fox Cougar, better suspension and EFI w/roller cam engine that will dust any of those old musclecars achieving twice the mileage of my GTO.

the mark 8 LSC 1st or 2nd gen could have one as soon as next year.

The G-force hemi cuda where muscle meets supercar with 1 million dollar build saw at barret-jackson got the owners signature. 870hp all motor with a 300 shot no side mirrors because i doubt you need them.

The 2008 RT with the drag pack 615RWHP wheelie bar and slicks and weld racing rims come stock.

And a JAGUAR XJ220 will add a picture later of it.

There isn't a car in the world I would trade my '85 Cougar for.  It was the first car I ever bought, I paid $250 for it.  At the time it had a decent paint job and was a solid running carbed 3.8L/C5.  After a year or two, me and my dad swapped in a 4.2L V8 from an '81 XR-7 that we bought from a local s yard.  It ran OK for having a hole in a piston and a piston with no rings at all.  :hick: Managed a 17.1 at 85MPH in the quarter with that motor.  Once I got ahold of a good 302 2Bbl, we swapped that in and instantly ran a 16.1 at 89MPH.  Me and dad spent ALOT of time working on this car together, 4 motors, 7 trannies, and 4, 7.5" differentials. I swapped in it over the years.
So as you can tell, I learned how to swap 5.0L's into these cars in under 4 hours because of it.  I drove it hard, for 4 years, Then when A deal came up on a Stang in town I really wanted, I bought it.  After a week or two my wife said "the stang or the Cougar has to go, you have too many cars."  So I had a kid in town offer me $750 for the cougar, so I jumped on it. I regreted it from the day I handed him the keys.  It only took him a month to put it broadside into a ditch and mangle the front end.  I let him sit on it for a few months and went out to look at it sitting in the field behind his barn.
As soon as I walked up on the car I could feel my emotions stirring from saddness to anger at the little POS for killing it like that.  He told me they were planning to crush it with the loader and send it to the s yard, so I offered him $250 for it.  He took it.
the damage he did to it has since been fixed, but it is now undergoing a full on resto.  I hope to have it running with the 351W that is in my barn by the end of summer.  This car will NEVER leave my ownership again.  WAY to many memories to tell about here.

Umm, actually, those are T-Bird tail lights :flip: Cougar lights have vertical bars and aren't smooth like those ones

DMC24Guy: I know where there's one of those brand new, with 7 kilometers on it. Yes, seven kilometers, as in 4 miles. The very rich owner of a local Pontiac/Buick/GMC dealership took delivery of it in 1987 and put it in the basp00get of the dealership, where it has sat in climate controlled comfort (including filtered air) ever since. It has never been titled, and has never even been PDI'd. Technically, since the car is still brand new and has never been titled, and is still in the custody of a Buick dealership, it would still have full factory warranty if he ever sold it.

We all know GNX's are rare. Imagine how rare a Canadian-spec one with metric speedometer would be (figure the Canadian market is about 1/10th the size of the US market - for example we got approximately 500 20th Cougars). Then imagine how rare a brand new one would be 20 years later. Now, put it back in your pants :punchballs:

They may have been modified on that car, but every article I've read to date says '67-'68 Shelby's have Cougar tailights.

Strange, every article I've read, and everyone I've had write me looking for a sequencer for their Shelby clone says they have mid 60's T-Bird lights. They did sequence like the Cougars, but then again, that was a Thunderbird first, too :D

*EDIT* I stand corrected - apparently the '67 Shelby did use Cougar lenses, but newer ones used the T-Bird lights

Yeah, well, eagles may fly and cat's don't get sucked into jet engines, but Birds never get neutered :punchballs:

Forgive me, I'm suffering another kidney stone (my fourth in two weeks - according to the CAT scan there are two more to go) and am quite gooned up on painkillers right now...

1970 Ford Torino Cobra with a 429 ram air, 4 speed, and a drag pack. My dad used to have one in the late 70's but had to sell it after he married my mom. He misses that car. It would have to be red (the pic isn't his car though). He's driven the T-bird and he says that the punch it has now reminds him of the Torino, and that it needs a 5 speed;) .

I didn't notice the grill till later. I noticed the decals and though "oh it's a 1970". Someone put the wrong grill on that car.....

It has a '71 grill and a '71 hood, so I would bet that it is a 1971 car.
