Title: 6.14 Gears
Post by: ztrane on April 25, 2007, 12:40:09 PM
I have never been in vehicle lower than 3.55 gears.  What is 6.14 gears like on these 5.0's?

That is an absurd amount of gear. Why would you want something like that? 3.73s and 4.10s are your typical options. I can tell you that 4.10s in a Stang are borderlining excessive.

6.14?
It would be about like a Tractor! Except maybe slower.

Really? I want quickness, not really speed.  I like to get to about 50mph really fast.  Not much of a fan of 80+mph. How fast is 4.10's?

410's you'll be reving a gear out...  it'd get absurd after a while.  i'd stick around 3.73's unless you HAVE to have 4.10's going from 3.55 to 3.73 is a bigger gain than what you think, it's the FINAL gear ratio.  4.10's on some mustangs is excessive..

6.14 are you serious? LOL.

Just to give you an idea... with a .79:1 5th gear (like my TC) 65mph would be at about 4000 rpm, versus about 113mph at 4000rpm with the 3.55, or about 2400rpm for 65mph.

With a 4.10 65mph is about 2750rpm.

4.30 is pretty much the absolute max i would go with on a car that would be driven on the street. Id want to keep the rpms under 3000 at cruise. Probably nothing over 3.90 with a daily driver. If the car is just for racing then thats different.

With a 6.14 your top speed is probably not much over 100mph depending on engine and transmission. With my .79 5th gear and 6500 rpm rev limit its 106mph. 1st gear would pretty much be pointless.

The only thing you'd want 6.14's in would be a truck with about 44" tires on it.

Why in gods green earth would you want that high a gears minus drag racing. Thats like drag only gears, not even really. More ot a truck gear now that I think of it

LOL!!
Okay I will be sane and stay with 4.10's. What Kinda of tire chewing can this 5.0 muster out wiht them gears?

shiznit my 4.10's in my stang are nuts, id never think of anything more. First gear on that t-5 is useless. All it does in first is roast them, unless you granny drive, and you still shift within seconds. Gas mileage SUCKS (351w sucks on gas anyway), and its wound up going down the highway even in 5th. I will say when you stomp on it, WOOHOO it will shove your ass into that seat!

With an automatic, 4.10's aren't such a bad idea, but you'll still be screaming down the highway.

4.10's are a little better for a built engine that can rev up a bit more, IMO. On a stock 5.0 they probably wouldn't be much fun, unless, as I said, you had an auto behind it (and avoided the highway most of the time)

I should add that 4.10s seem to be the favored gear ratio for AODs. As least that's what I have noticed. It is also a "love it" or "hate it" gear ratio. After making a 1200 mile round trip with a T-5, it always felt like I needed to shift up another gear. At highway speeds, the gas pedal is super sensitive. So much as a slight movement of the pedal would cause a very noticeable change in speed. Fun for passing cars... not so much for cruising (90% of the trip). Around town shifting from a dead stop almost became a c... and as mentioned first gear is almost useless. But you shouldn't have to worry about that if you have an AOD.

Some days I love it. Others.....

EDIT: dadgum you Red!!!

HMMMM... Well I wont be driving it on the highway, i got a brand new pickup for that. I was going to just have fun from 1st to 2nd and turn a corner and lightem up and shift to 3rd kinda thing.

Tire roasting if you have a 7.5"open will be a one wheel wonder. Now if you have a TC/XR7 it could be fun

You're wanting to do a lot of work just to spin the tires. That can be done without any work or money.

with my around 320's hp 351w and nine inch on 225's its scary trying to get it to hook, it will rost them in first and second with the t-5. Only time till the t-5 takes a shiznit though. pos soft gears

If/When I swap to a V8 T5, I'll probably put in some 4.10's to make the .6:1 overdrive a little more livable...

Take a second look at the overdrive ratios. The T-5 actually has a numerically lower OD.

t-56 would give me allot more strength, and i like the thought of 6 gears over the 5. That t-5 is not meant for the torque produced by that 351. You can feel it. its not gonna last very long once it starts getting driven more

4.10 Gears are awsome, I had them in all my 5.0L LX coupes.  I could do 3rd gear brake torques with ease.  Like has been said first gear doesn't last long though, but if you have sticky drag tires, you can pull the tires off the ground at the track, with minimal mods. ;)  at least in a Stang you can.

Okay, now for install.  I have never took trac-lok apart.  Is it difficult to place 4.10's in my mercury?

You sure?

t56's as put in Camaros and Firebirds had a .5:1 sixth gear (that's why those  things can get almost 30 mpg on the highway)...I know the T5's fifth gear was not that low.
