The trans in the bird has a problem when I get on it and it tries to down shift. The RPMs go to about 5000 then it down shifts and barks the tires. It only does it on down shift. If you just take off its fine. There is no kick down linkage that I found to adj beings its a computer controlled trans.
I just don't want to break the rear end on the car because its exspencive and a PITA to change out.
wouldn't your trans. be a 4r70w if its a 96'? just wondering. My 94' tbird with a 4.6 has a 4r70w.
They are the same thing.
I thought the castings look quite different, and the 4r70w has modified internals. Oh, the AODe seemed to also only have a SB windsor bolt pattern.
Correct, but the computer controls; for the most part; are the same. When was the last time you did a fluid change? Sounds like somethings stuck in the valve body. I take it that it shifts that high under light loads?
Yes, going down the road around 65mph and 1/2 throttle to pass some one it will jump way up in RPM. Then kick in and bust the rear tires loose.
I just got the car in Oct. I don't even know if the fluid has ever been changed. Its still bright red.
OOOOHHH! you're slipping. gotcha. I thought you meant you were HOLDING gears. Drop the pan and see whats goin' on.
They were know to have random shift problems but I can't find anyone thats had the RPM jump problem.
Mlps
Mlps??? Please explane
lever position sensor. tells the computer what gear you're in. something that's not on your trans.
Nope I have a AOD-E in a 4.6 '93 Grand Marquis...
It has slipped on the 1-2 shift since approx 30K mi(1998)... Dealer tried to tell me the clutches were bad, told them they were FOS as down shifting into 2nd has always been fine... Fix??? I installed one of the B&M electronic shift improvers and with "F" type fluid it's still shifting good at 126K mi... Guessing it has a valve body issue, but I don't really care...
