My father will be soon be doing an engine swap on an 88' Cougar XR7 with a 5.0. He will be taking out the original 5.0 which has a few problems and swapping in a low miles 5.0 from a 86' Lincoln town car. We needed to know that since the Lincolns 5.0 Throttle body point to the left and the Cougars throttle body point to the right can you just swap the upper intake from the Cougar onto the Lincoln motor or would the whole intake need to be swapped? Also is there anything else that we must consider in this swap any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Peace,
Ho?
if seen a ho intake reversed and used on a town car, so i would guess use the cougars intake and you would be all set
No differance in engines just unbolt the intake and change it's direction.
Will that work, changing the direction of the intake?
The easiest, guaranteed to work way is to re-use the upper and lower from the Cougar and just install it on the Town Car block. That way you avoid all frustration of potential minor differences in the manifold set-up on the Town Car compared to the Cougar. Also while you have it apart, check those sensors mounted in the manifold to make sure they're clean and good. If they look cruddy, now is the time to replace them.
Don't bother using the Town Car's throttle body since I believe the mounting for the throttle is a bit different since it points to the 'wrong side'.
Also, take the oil sending unit off the Cougar block and install it on the new motor as the one on the Town Car may not work with the Cougar's gauges.
Again, since you will have it all apart take the time to clean the Cougar's throttle body and spacer to get any carbon build-up/oil out. Pull the Idle Air Control valve and clean that as well.
I agree, swap the upper and lower.Keep the Cougar's fuel rails as well.Take a minute and look at them compared side by side ,and you'll see the difference.
ABSOLUTELY NOT NECESSARY SWAP THE UPPER OR LOWER INTAKE... The are designed to bolt on in either direction... You'll need the Cougar throttle body and EGR spacer as the hookup is different... Easiest would be to use the Cougar upper, and not have to swap parts between intakes...
You'll need to look at the fuel rails, they possibly may need to be swapped...
OK guys every HO or SO lower intake is identical, NO difference in any of them. Of course the uppers are different but either bolt on facing right or left....
GOT IT????
This also applies to the Cobra & GT40 intakes... My Lightning GT40 intake faces left, the one on my Bird is a Lightning upper bolted on a Cobra lower(which is identical to the GT40 lower)...
Wow quick and very direct responses, I really appreciate the info this will really help speed up the engine swap. Again thanks alot guys.
Peace,
I disagree TurboCoup50 every HO or SO lower intake is NOT identical. For Roehm’s purposes here they are. But there are differences for my purposes.
Read over this guys findings (http://"http://www.tmossporting.com/tabid/2807/Default.aspx")specifically this...
“The SAC intakes have the least amount of material, the ALCAN and CAE have more, and the M 3 intake has the most. The M3 has enough material to produce a 1250 size cross section at the head without having to weld the top of the runner. It holds potential to produce the best flow un-welded. Happy Hunting! “
And then if anybody happens to come across a M3 let me know, I have yet to check my 93 Cobra lower but when I start on my motor I will be needing one of these M3’s as I do plan to port.
He means with rotation. They are identical in the way that they bolt up.
Hi Jim
Yes I was referring to bolt on... As far as different castings, yes I'd heard some were better than others... Never explored the possibilities, I give them all to the s guy...
Anybody interested in a ported HO setup(upper and lower)??? Got one that has been cut open ported and rewelded(basically what we did before decent intakes were available)....
I didn't say that HO and SO intakes were different.
The Lincoln lower intake may be different in that the sensors may be different, obviously fuel rails, etc.
If he uses the lower thats on the Cougar already, and uses his existing fuel rails, he won't have any problem with this. Even by re-using the upper, it won't be necessary to pull the throttle body and put it on the Lincoln upper since they are the same. Yes, both lowers are the same physically but why bother removing all the stuff from the Cougar lower to install on another identical lower. It would be eliminating a lot of hassle.
Besides, weren't Town Cars SO 5.0s? There's nothing HO to fuss about.
Who was fussing about anything HO???
YES Town Cars are SO, same setup as the Crown Vic and Grand Marquis...
Probably the biggest pitfall wasn't even mentioned... Those reversed intake SOs use a std rotation water pump, ours is reverse rotation...
Hey Roehm you're gonna need to swap the Water pump...
That wasn't meant as a personal cut Tom. If it sounded like it, I apologize. I've seen HO thrown around in this thread and didn't want to confuse Roehm with it because I even began to get confused. Just reinforcing that it isn't an issue.
I really didn't know about that water pump difference though. I'll file that one away into my memory bank. :D
No problem... :D

right click,,,,,"save as":D
but as for what the question was in general,, the intake will flip and work.
Thanks for that link,, interesting.
stupd thought here,,,,,, wondering if the 351 upper bolts to the 302?
and
what about the 302 truck engines with those duel throttle bodies,, has anyone tried those on a car?
Nope the 351 trucks have a oval port AFIK it only mates to it's self ... Lower sucks as it is very short and has a sharp bend from the plenum mating to the ports... Gave one of those to the s guy as well...
The 5.0 truck intake is fairly efficient and and the lower is the basis for Holly's aftermarket intakes... Those use trapezoidal ports at the plenum to upper, AFIK same deal as the 5.8, doesn't bolt to any other factory intake...... Saw a LSC Lincoln with one, was defiantly a ghetto rig...
i thought atleast the 5.0 truck upper would work. that kinda sucks cause ,, i ,, well,,, nevermind:D
never actually tried it but i've always heard that the std rotation w/p have a different bolt pattern than rev rotation w/p. might have to change timing cover.
