I can't even imagine. Once again, it's time to re-evaluate your stance on gun control. (just don't go the registry route. That's a waste of everyone's time and money).

My sister Ivy is in Virginia right now, and that may be the school she was taking the odd course in. Wow.

This is a horrible thing. I couldn't imagine if I was sitting in class and something like that happened.

I just hope this doesn't turn into a huge gun issue. It's the person, not their weapon of choice.
The guy could have just as easily mowed people down with his car while they were walking between classes.

It always does seem to be a gun though, doesn't it?

I agree. It always seems to be a gun. Unfortunately it will probably always be until they find a easier more efficient way to do what they intend to do... kill.

Terrorists use bombs. I think it's only a matter of time before these kind of people start doing that instead of using guns.

I prefer gun-safety training over gun-control, my opinion only.  Sad thing though.  Worked all day without knowing til I got home.  it's all over tv.

Well, there are varying degrees of gun control. Believe it or not, the US uses forms of gun control as it is. I think they could maybe just use a few more.

I'm a farmer at the core, who ate lots of venicine growing up, so I'm not on the whole ban guns side of the fence.

Actually the largest mass murder in the US had no guns involved. A man upset over his girlfriend leaving him tracked her to a NYC night club, poured a gallon of gas out on the floor and lit it. 54 people died in the blaze. Was mid 80's IIRC.

Guns are not the real problem, crazy people are the problem.

On the other hand hand, it seems men distraught over a significant other are a common link. Maybe we should ban women? :shakehead

As one who was raised around firearms, and taught firearm etiquette, I cringe whenever a tragedy like this happens. Banning a firearm, or mandating even MORE gun legislation does little to curb the violence.
25 years ago this thing was almost unheard of, most of the violent shootings have been influenced by the mass of seemingly everyday acceptance of the .
Even if firearms are banned, those people that want them will still get them, while the lawful citizens get their constitutional rights trampled on.
The fact that most of these crazies kill themselves after such an act just drives home the fact they have something seriously wrong upstairs.
My point is this, there's no one small thing that we can do to to stop this, and mandating more firearms laws will solve very little.
It's a tragedy...my condolences to all who have lost someone in this sad ordeal...

I always thought the biggest mass murder in US history happened on September 11, 2001.

Please, people, have a bit of respect for the dead here. Don't let's grab this as an excuse to push an agenda, be it pro gun control or con. Let's just agree that people suck.

I've always said that if you wanted proof of how creative mankind is, simply look at the numerous methods we've come up with for killing or torturing each other.

all i have to say is to many people die every day that shouldn't, and that whole thing is a perfect example.

I'm always amazed the human race has survived this long without wiping ourselves out. Too many nut jobs trying to screw up life for the rest of us. RIP to those innocent lives ended so early.

I can agree to that.

(Just to set things straight, again, I didn't say ban guns. Not even close. Guns aren't banned in Canada either. If anyone wants to keep this issue going in a new thread, feel free. I'm happy with leaving it at this.)

As can I.  I went to school with a girl who goes to VA Tech.  I'm really hoping everything's well with her.

I just graduated from Tech in December and my sister lives in the dorm where the shooting started.  The RA's body was found just around the corner from her dorm room.  This whole situation is crazy.  While I do have very strong opinions on what to do about gun control - like others have said, this isn't the time for that argument.

There is another board member who is still a student there - can't remember his name though.  Edit: It was jlewis05 and he already posted.
