Post by: 86 night cat on April 15, 2007, 02:40:54 PM
well, my fuel pump is going out. i can't afford to have someone do it, so i am going to try to do it myself. how difficult is it to change a fuel pump?  how do you drop the tank to get to it?

Jack it up and put it on stands. Then lossen the 2 tank strap bolts. Then use a floor jack to lower the tank low enough to get the sender thing out of the tank. Not to hard. Just a pain working under the car. You also want to put some greese on the filler tube so it slips off easy with out the rubber getting messed up.

I backed my car up on jack stands first.I also used a piece of wood about a foot wide (thin and flat like plywood) to help balance the tank.I only lowered it enough to pull the pump, and left the jack under the tank. Not too hard of a job.I've done it so many times I can do it in about 20 minutes.

You may have to depressurize the fuel system.  I think you can do this by taking the coil wire off and turning the car over for a few seconds.  You may also want to replace the fuel filter while you got the tank down.

huh???  the filter is on the frame rail in front of the passenger rear tire and if the car hasnt been run prior to starting the work the system should have minimal pressure.
