Title: 1987 Sport Coupe is here, pics page 2!
Post by: P71 on April 15, 2007, 12:59:15 AM
...but I bought it anyway. :hick: :D

It "high centered" on a really, REALLY BIG rock (the car is physically bent). Not to mention the extreme rust in the shock towers, radiator support, and trunk floor.

It did however have a near mint BLUE interior! So I paid $250 for it :D Stripping to commence tomorrow once we drag it home (unfortunately). You guys have to see the rock impact though, it's the 2nd most bizarre fox Bird/Cat wreck I've ever seen.

The first was a 83-86 Cougar that got the left rear 1/4 panel FLATTENED.

The thing is (on the crushed Coug), the smash is straight and level, like a dumpster or Mack truck, not round like a tree. *shudder*

So, I drug the Sport home. Observations:

87 Sport, Oxford White on Shadow Blue cloth. Dual power sets, EATC, etc, loaded except moonroof and leather! The rear axle code is M (2.73 trac-loc), AND it's an 8.8"
The interior is just stellar! Headliner is mint, dual lighted visors, UNCRACKED dash! The "Systems Sentry" plate is blank though (wierd). The wack to the passenger side intruded the door jamb BAD. Poor car was really nice maybe a year ago. Jerk parked it in a field of grass to rot for 6 months. I gotta figure what's wrong with it (cranks, no start, has fuel and spark from coil). Here's some pics after spending THREE HOURS washing it!!

Also, it has the metal rear window trim, "Star Wars" gauges, EATC, keyless, and that stupid overflow bottle I wanted :hick:

That friggin' thing looks better than my old '87 Sport, underside damage or not.

The systems sentry panel is blank because the disco dash incorporates those functions. I've got a blank one in my car out of that parts TC (it didn't have systems sentry - is that odd in a TC?). I note it has the non-sport seats as well - the Sport seats didn't come in Sports until '88.

As for the rear end, if it's an 8.8 it's the first '87 non-TC I've ever heard of with one. I've heard of a few 88 Sports sneaking out of the factory, but never an '87. All Sports had traction lock, though
Title: 1987 Sport Coupe is here, pics page 2!
Post by: P71 on April 15, 2007, 10:59:44 PM
It's DEFINATELY an 8.8. The thing is, when we were towstrapping it, the truck read 55MPH (and the truck is within 1-2 MPH of actual), the Sport read 61. Could be a swap? Or a really late 87? I have to dig some more.

Don't let the pics fool you, it sat in a flooded field for the last 6 months, the underside is RUSTY! I can touch the gas tank through the trunk floor! It's sad too, because you can see it used to be really well taken care of. Tomorrow I'm going to crawl all over it with the camera to assess whether it's "safe" or not and document the damage/options. The paint is stained to all hell (sap tree) which sucks. At least they didn't mess up the interior. The non-sport seats have power recline though, kinda neat!
Title: 1987 Sport Coupe is here, pics page 2!
Post by: Thunder Chicken on April 15, 2007, 11:06:29 PM
Yeah, it looks pretty loaded up - mine didn't have the EQ, only had one power seat, didn't have power recline, or any of the lighting options. Some day I WILL own one of these cars with the automatic lights and mirror! Just to say I did!

I know you haven't spent much time under it, but is that rear sway bar as big as the TC one? My '88 had a rear sway bar, but it was only about half as thick as the TC one. The  was about as big as a pencil.

Post by: crystal on April 15, 2007, 11:17:45 PM
Wow, another power recline car... I've been trying to find another forever. My sport came like that and the only other one I've seen was in a junkyard and I definately nabbed the power recline stuff from it (seats were trashed)

The rear end looks IDENTICAL to Layla's (except the brakes). Remember though, I've never owned a Sport, and I've spent maybe 5 minutes under this thing. I did go through all of the paperwork on the car and checked off the options:

5.0 V8 EFI
AOD
Sport Coupe (blacked out trim/mirrors/taillights/locks)
TC style center console
floor shift with leather shifter
dual power seats
power recline
power windows
power mirrors
EATC with rear defrost and A/C
Premium Sound with EQ
Power antenna (chrome antenna, black base)
front license plate thing (yes, it is NOT broken :D )
auto-dim
automatic headlamps
illuminated c-pillars and footwells (and glovebox and console box)
dual lit visors
power trunk release
power gas release
star wars gauges with trip do-hickey (a LOT fancier then the "base" gauges my Cougar had)
digital clock
cruise control
almost but not quite TC style steering wheel
interval wipers
tilt
keyless entry
lit locks
2.73 posi rear (has an 8.8 with sway bar, unkown whether it's original yet)
TC sized front sway bar

lots of rust, a big dent, a wrinkled 1/4, and warped rotors :hick:

Also the blue seats have a lighter blue/grey middle. I've never seen that (made them look Charcoal/Raven in the py pics I was sent). And the drivers seat belt receptacle is perfect, the passenger one is busted. Wierd...

What are "star wars gauges" ?
And power recline? is that just the tilt back and forth front and rear up and down type recline? i have that and thought all the bird power seats were like that.

Star Wars guages are the full digital dash option. Power recline is a kind of rare option. The seat backs are power up and down. That is in addition to the 6 way power seat option. You couldn't get power recline with Sport Seats though.

And yes on the star wars and power recline. This is the 1st power reclin I've seen in real life.

Sports are identified by the VIN - base Birds would be 60, Sports, 61, LX's 62 and Turbo Coupes 64. All T-Birds start out 1FABP, so a Sport would start out 1FABP61

Stupid Sport! How do you guys work on these 5.0's?? There's so much stuff in the way! Anyways, I replaced the inertia switch on a hunch, and got fuel to spray from under the hood like crazy at the schrader valve. There's air outside. And the #8 spark plug wire will zap through a screwdriver onto the shock tower. Hmmm, still no start (turns over forever). SO I hook up trusty scan tool, got a 21, 23, 24, 10, and 11 (KOEO only obviouisly). So 23 is TPS, great! I have a new one leftover from my Cougar a billion years ago, so I replaced it and checked the voltage. I took of the air hose and looked at the TB, looks OK, so I spray some starting fluid down it (yum). STILL no start! WTF? So I drag the neighbor over to turn the sucker, hool up the timing light, no dice. Timing is right on the money. Unless both HG's are blown to smithereens I can't figure this beast out. Anybody have an SO EEC for cheap :hick:

I crawled under it agai, DEFINATELY an 8.8 and the sway bar is the same thickness as Layla's. It has quad shock mounts too (but no quads). The rust is pretty gnarly underneath, mostly the trunk floor and the front k-member/shock area. The rock hit on the passenger sill is BAD too, it actually ripped through the floorboard and tore off the fuel lines. The fuel lines are replaced, but the mounts are all gone. .

PS, Vinnie wuz right on the door cups :(

There's plenty to do. In between running ABM, shipping boxes, making re-orders, and fielding phone calls/emails/PM's I'm swamped on "open" days. Plus dealing with painting the office and the rest of the honey-do list on the house. On top of all that Layla's been apart since January, John's TC since Febuary, and I still have to take care of the truck, g/f's GP GT, John's GTO, neighbor's Explorer, and the rest of the family's cars. :hick:

Pfft, the 4.6 and the LSx's weren't designed by COMPLETE morons. If I ever find the guy that came up with the water pump/front bracket assembly on the roller 5.0 I swear I will gouge his eyeballs out with a plastic Taco Bell spork. Of course the fact that they let the monkey loose on bolt sizes doesn't help (he got the TC's too, stupid standard motor with metric accessories).

At least ALL the bolts will be metric instead of only half of them :hick:

Although I DO have to admit, absolutely NOTHING is as bad as working on a 4th gen f-body. I had a 96 LT1 and OMG that thing was a *&%$!!! You need a lift to change the plugs, you have to pull the entire front cradle from the bottom to swap motors, ahhhh!!

No wonder I like my 2.3T, I replaced EVERY bolt under the hood, and all of the bad Ford designs, and it's a joy to work on! AMC's are too, the V8's have a small "footprint" and the engine bays are HUGE.

WOW, a little behind on the posts but I just learned that I have a Sport thunderbird! All this time I thought it was an LX. I just checked the VIN on my car to see if it had a 61 after the FABP and it does. I got to thinking after reading in here that they have blacked out trim. Mine has all the blacked out trim and a "star wars" dash. Which I have never seen any other Tbird with a full digital dash and very rarely a digital speedo. Might be sad, lol, but this excites me! I wonder what else I will learn....

I have a working SO computer if you need it. I pulled it out of my Bird. Dumb question but is the TFI module ok? Is the egr working ok? Your best bet would be checking all the sensors to see if they're getting juice. I bet your problem lies somewhere with a sensor.

Post by: P71 on April 19, 2007, 06:19:30 PM
I'm trading Vinnie for an ECU and some clips ;)

I have NO idea if the TFI is good because the dizzy bolt is stripped. I do get enough spark out of any plug wire to zap John though :hick:
The timing light reads bright too, so I honestly don't think it's spark.

The EGR rusted off of my old Cougar and it still ran :P

I'm going with HG's. The oil looks green and the coolant looks like oil :hick:

Probably 80-85% of 85-88 Thunderbirds and Cougars had a digital speedo. The base dash had a digital speedometer with buttstuffogue fuel and water gauges, and idiot lights for BAT and OIL.

As for being sad - don't be. The Sport is actually a better car IMO (here comes the hate mail and death threats from LX owners). You get a traction-lock rear, quad shocks, stiffer springs, bigger sway bars, and a floor shifter. The Sport was kinda an in-between car - it was in between the LX and TC.

Mike: I dunno if bad HG's would prevent the car from starting, unless it was bad on just about every cylinder. It would run like a bag of shiznit, and smoke, and belch, and other nasty things, but unless it was hydro-locked it should still start. Blown head gaskets on both sides of the engine would be highly unlikely (remember, this is a real engine - two banks of four cylinders :flip:).

The timing being off is still a possibility, regardless of your results with the timing light. The cam timing could be off if the timing chain slipped a tooth, and somebody else may have rotated the distributor when trying to get it running again. You did say the dist bolt is stripped, so unless you did it somebody else was at it.

Another possibility - are the plug wires on in the correct order?

And a question: If the car is a write off, why are you bothering to get it started anyway, if you're only gonna take it apart? ;)
