Title: surface rust
Post by: 86 night cat on April 03, 2007, 03:34:45 PM
hey all! question: i have some surface cancer starting to show on my door. it is bubbling up the paint, but i don't think it's all the way through . after i sand it clean will primer and a layer of spraypaint keep it from rusting for a while? i want to fix the rust spots on the body, but i will only be able to do it a little at a time. once i get done, i plan on having the whole thing repainted. it could ake all summer to do the work and save for a decent paint job. do you think primer and spraypaint will keep for a few months?

Sanding it won't work, you have to sandblast it and make sure it is clean of any rust pits then bondo, sand and paint.
That will keep it at bay for awhile.
Also if their is no visible rock chip that the rust started from check the insides of your doors(remove door trim panel)with a light,i guarantee you will see rust from the inside out, bubbling with no chip means this,1/4s are the worst for this.
Ford did not treat any of the inner panels to paint or rust protection unfortunatley.

putting a rust inhibitor would help, and same on the inside if there is any. if you sandblast mask around the area and have plastic around it to to keep the spray in that area, other wise you might mess up the paint around it, and make one hell of a mess

Yeah, there are some rock chips. i don't have access to a sandblaster, what about the gels i have seen, do they work at all? or is that a bad idea all together?

if its a rust inhibitor it is what you want, it will seep into the metal to stop the rust for now.
