I have an 84 Cougar. 5.0 CFI. Kingcars and I were discussing the HO conversion. What exactly would my CFI engine take to do the HO conversion apposed to the "newer" SO EFI engines?
You'll probably need all the stuff I just bought from vinnietbird as I'm doing the same thing, sort of. Because '85 and earlier weren't roller cams, I have a different cam than the stock Mustang piece. What you'll need is basically the EFI intakes, harness, fuel injectors, fuel rail & lines, fuel pump, computer, and a lot of other odds & ends (Sensors and stuff). I think the easiest way to do it would be to find a junk T-bird/Cougar with SEFI and do a side-by-side swap. That and an EVTM will be your friend. I got one for about $12 on eBay.
I agree with the EVTM.
The single greatest tool you will ever buy for a conversion...period.;)
He's looking to go HO not just do an SEFI upgrade.
About the only thing that would be useful to him is the wiring harness and a few sensors from an SEFI t-bird or cougar....
D'oh! I guess buying a whole car for essentially the wiring harness is pretty dumb. I'm just re-capping the parts that I've acquired. I have the computer for a MkVII because I'll be using a cam with a 351 firing order and the E7TE heads... so mine's kind of a half-assed HO conversion I guess.
I dont have a set plan for what I intend to do to my engine as of yet. I would like to just get wheels, exhaust, and suspension done. Paint is pristine on my car(for now). I would like to rebuild it and stroke it to a 347. Anthony(kingcars) and I were discussing his power gains, and how much more responsive my Cougar seems to be after I chopped the ler off(odd I know). I pointed out that mine was CFI, and neither of us knew exactly what it would take to do such a conversion on the older style "EFI".
How is that a half-assed conversion? The HO 5.0 and 351 share the same firing order........
The biggest differences are of course your CFI setup AND your tappet-style camshaft. If you wanna go roller cam you must do one of 2 things.
1. Buy a retrofit roller cam for a flat tappet block
2. Swap your block.
Believe it or not #2 is cheaper..... Find you a wrecked Mustang with a good motor for the easiest way to obtain all parts needed.
If your not really set on SEFI you could just throw a 4bbl and intake on it. You could then modify to your hearts content.
As before mentioned. I have strongly thought about buying a 5.0 out of a Mustang and rebuilding mine seperately. Also thought about carbing it. I dont know yet, that is farther down my to do list. But it got me thinking. I almost had an wrecked 83 Heritage, but the Motherf**kers crushed it.
