Title: Saved from the crusher
Post by: dw43935 on March 25, 2007, 09:25:51 PM
Bought it for $75, with a locked up 3.8. Sat in the garage for 2 yrs, and was forced to start fixing it up after totalling my F150. Luckily my g/f's brother had a motor from a '85 cougar, in exchange for a roof repair. So after the engine swap and some minor trans. repairs, this is what I ended up with, for around $350-$400. Future mods.....paint, wheels, and hopefully a V8/ 5 spd. When the funds are right!

That is one smokin deal. To bad your buddy didn't give it to you for free like the way I got my 84 turbo coupe. The grill say 83-84 and the tail lights say 85-86 so witch is it. It looks to be an 85 from what I can see of the dash in the pic of the rear of the car.

The grille has the later ('85+) emblem on it....

Judging by the C-pillar emblems, tail lights, grille and third brake light I'd say it's an '86. Oh yeah, and his user title, too :hick:

I greatly appreciate the compliments. It is an '86. The grill & tail lights are factory. My buddy's dad bought the car new, so I've had my eye on it for about 15 years, but it took him 230,000 miles to finally decide to let it go. The 3.8 that's in it now only has around 70,000. It was alot of wrenching and cleaning, but you guy's keep me motivated. I've seen alot of sweet ride's on this site!

*sigh* alright. my dad bought it in 1998, with 70,000 miles on it, for $5000. although is that really that bad? with that mileage, and it being only 11 years old thats probably normal, right?

i gotta talk to my mom and see what he thought about it at the time. but even if the price was a little high, he was desperate for a thundercat. he bought brand new in 1987 a thunderbird EXACTLY like thunderjet302's. totalled it like 2 years later when someone sitting in a turn lane with his wheels turned was rear-ended, smacked right into my dad as he was going by. that was the story he told my brother and i several times, to "NEVER sit waiting to turn with your wheels turned."

he had a couple ford tauruses from GE as company cars. he liked them. then he moved to a Power Systems from I&SE and that didnt include a company car. he tried but couldnt find a tbird, and he really missed it. this cougar was right near home and the closest he could find. had the v8, and the special anny. edition helped the decision too. he really loved it. he always told me he was gonna put a Paxton supercharger on it. that or "well make a stroker motor out of it".

my mom always says dad's "tu-tone tbird" was his pride and joy.

what can i say, im not surprised, after reading coolcats over and reading about everyone's experiences with these things on here, these things are just flat-out GOOD CARS. nothing more to say.

That's a good looking car. $5,000 probably wasn't too bad at all.

dw, good save man, about 5 years ago I saved my '86 cat from the crusher.  Now, fila saved it from being parted out, and then being sent to the crusher.

I was given mine by my mom. We had it stored for 15 years. My uncle owned it and was killed defending the car. So I guess I paid my uncles life. Thats why I am never getting rid of this car. Its not just a tribute to him. I love this car. Every hard earned penny is well worth it. I nicknamed it Curtis for him.
