i think i someone who can give me a 351w out of a 70's ford wagon. he started to take it apart to rebuild it pretty good while ago, but him not being a "ford guy" he didnt have motivation to finish it. heres where i step in.
but got some questions, i thought the 351w and the 302HO are pretty close, does that mean that cams and heads are interchangable? and if so, is this recomended, or stick wth 351 parts?also the block needs to be machined, so i figure while its at the shop me extra bore would be nice. so is .030 over the lagest and still be safe? or can a 351 handle the extra bore a little better then a 302 and i can take more off?
thanks,
Keith
I would stick with a .030" over bore from a longevity standpoint. You can swap the cam and heads over...your lower intake will not work due to the extra deck-height though. You could probably use stock HO headers or aftermarket shorties with no problem, just have to modify the h-pipe slightly. Ford racing sells an accessory bracket for the 351 if you need it. The also sell 351w specific headers if you can afford to buy new ones.
if i do use 302 heads on a 351w, u said that a 302 lower will not work, will a regular old 351w one work, or do i start to get into crazy custom fab stuff? will a 302 oil pan work also or do i need to buy the special 351 pan with a foxbody double sump design? and does an what a 351 .030 over is?
sorry for all the questions, i just dont want to get in too far above my head.
If you do use the 302 heads you will have to drill the head bolt holes out. the 302 uses 7/16" bolts the 351 uses 1/2"bolts.Also the 351 intake is wider than the 302 due to the taller deck height of the block.I rember someone made spacers to use a 302 intake on a 351 but that was years ago, but a good machine shop can make them.
The oil pan is different also the 351 has a kick out on the side of the block.Canton or Moroso make 351 swap pans or you can possibly use a CV or GM 351 pan I know the 5.0 pans are the same as the fox pans(I have an 87 GM has fox style pan.)

What CAN a Windsor do? How about 427?

If your going to bore it you will need new pistons, rings, and bearings also will need rod's and crank reworked, Might look at just getting it all together in a Kit like the one above for $1k
427 is pushing it it can be done but ive done my homework on the strokers on the safe side is 393, other then that you have durability probs down the road. I have asked enough people.
If its a 1970 351w long block definitely use the 351 heads. In 70 they had 1.84 intake valves and a slightly larger intake port than the 302 heads. The 69-70 351 heads are the equivalent to iron GT40 heads. Here's an easy way to tell what you've got. The early pre-74 windsors have L shaped water passages. All others are rectangular.
Here's a pic of some 69 351w heads. I circled the water passages.
A 302 pan wont work. FRPP has a 5.5 qt swap pan and pick up that is definitely the cheapest route (out side of the junk yard... only a true would try and get an oil pan there, heheh...). Summit sells them for $135...

You'll need a 351w specific intake... TFS has arguably the best ones. You'll also need to install longer fuel lines between your fuel rails.

You'll also need a 351w swap power steering/ac bracket.

Oh yeah, you'll need a 351w TFI distributor. I'd definitely get this from a wreching yard because an MSD will cost ya! Also make sure the distributor gear is compatable with the cam you're using. Chances are with a 70 block you'll want to use a hyd flat tappet cam after you price what a retro roller would cost you.

I'm not sure what you need to do about engine mounts but I'd definitely do some research in that dept.
I think that about covers it!
And these people have actually HAD one.. or is this “a Friend of a friends cousin’s niece told him so” situation?
I have been a member of this site http://www.ffcobra.com/ For a few years now and these 427w are quite common there due to the nature of the site. They are often referred to as Scary Fast (see thread below). But can't say I have ever heard much about reliability problems.
From people that actual own them.

im taking for a daily driver car a 427 is pushing it
hey thanks for all the information. i think im gonna try to go with a 302HO style cam, and 351w style heads just cus i dont wanna fool around with all the thats involved in swapping heads. ill let you all know how it goes. thanks again
Unless you are going to lower the engine somehow, you might have clearence issues with the hood. Well, that's what I'm planning for atleast
Heres some Ford info that you may find helpfull in relation to the possable clearance problems.

It looks to me like the Windsor sit's about 1.25 taller. I say "about" becouse It's not clear how there measuring deck height.
As for lowering the engine somehow, check Convertable moter mounts, I havent seen this for myself but I understand for some reason they are a lower profile mount.
EricCoolCats may be able to answer that.
I had a 351w in my cougar and i just used the motor mounts from a 302 and they worked just fine. i never had any clearance issues with the hood either, but i did use a air cleaner that droped down around the carb as well. it was from canadian tire, with a K&N filter. that setup seemed to work really good. If you have any other questions feel free to ask me and i can try to answer them for you.
