Since my car isn't running right now and it's gotten too chilly outside to work on it again I've been thinking about my poor little H.O. 302. I've been wondering if I should keep the trickflow cam in there (its the 0.499/0.510 one) by itself or if I should make it more at home by adding some better flowing heads and an intake. Problem is cash: If I upgrade to too nice a set of heads and intake I run into the problem of outpacing my fuel system necessitating new injectors and a new mass airflow meter which won't help out with the budget thingy. So what I'm wondering is if I upgraded to something say like cast iron gt40 heads and an explorer intake or so would i have to upgrade my fuel system? Or would I be hovering around or below the 300 hp mark?
Of course to top it all off I've located some fully assembled gt40x heads for 800 bucks but that puts me right back at my first problem.
(BTW Carl if you're interested in those heads call me or send me an email)
Well,my ported and polished E-7 heads probably flow as good or a little better than the GT40 heads, and I also have tthe Explorer intake, and my H.O fuel pump and 19# injectors support it fine.My two cents.
What other mods have you done? The TFS stage 1 cam is a bit much for stock unported E-7's and unless you throw a shift kit at your AOD, you won't see the full potential of your cam due to the ar shifting around 4800-5200 RPM while that cam still pulls HARD till about 6000. Did you upgrade your pump?
I've installed transgo shiftkit and a b&m 2100 rpm stall converter with at turbocoupe rear out back 3.55 gears. And I also replaced the fuel pump with a 190 when i pulled and painted the gas tank, yes i wanted it pretty too. So what I'm wondering is with this setup would it be worthwhile to add some gt40 heads should I chance across them, or should I just pull out the trickflow cam and throw the stocker back in? Or just bust my ass and save up for some twisted wedge heads, BBK intake, 24lb injectors and new mass air meter, oh and 70mm throttlebody?
Would the gt40 heads with an explorer intake put me around 300 hp?
Absolutely, that is IF there are no piston-to-valve clearance issues....
Would the second combo you mentioned yield more power? yes it would, but as you stated it's gonna cost more.
I posted MY mods in another post, but here they are :
I tried a certain brand MAF with 24# injectors and it ran like poo-poo it idle. I mean it chugged and poured black smoke into the air! My problem was that company's (cough*starts with G, ends with I*cough) MAF. I have a 24# metering tube for my C&L and injectors, but the car's been running REAL good the way I have it setup and I really don't feel like pulling everything apart again just yet.
With the TFS cam you'd have more than that at the crank.......probably around 310-320 flywheel which would be 260-270 to the tires with the right valvetrain setup.
Save up asnd get the heads, injectors, maf and intakes.
All but the heads can be found for fairly cheap on sites like the corral,(cheaper than ebay)and the heads can be got for around 900-1000.
I bought my edelbrock performers off the corral for 750shipped with 1.6 ratio blue motorsport rockers.
