I've been really curious as of late exactly what the demographic/rarities etc are here. (Thanks to Mikey's FILA and the 5 87 20'th Anny LS's) So, what EXACT Bird(s)/Cat(s) do you own NOW? I'd like to make up a registry eventually, so past cars will count if you still have a VIN. Here's what's needed, please fill it out:

FILA,

According to my 1984 full-line Thunderbird brochure:

All FILA's had 3.8L V6, quad-shocks, articulated seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, etc. No 5.0, posi was optional, etc. We need your door tag info.

According the the Vin # on mine, it has a 5.0, seats, the leather on the steering wheel is peeled off. I *think* I have trac lock. I can run to a freinds for the info. Give me 10 min's

From what I read, the 20th annys were not XR7's. I did a little research a while back because I thought the same thing. Maybe Eric or any of the other anny owners can give more info on this.

That is the only idiosyncracy...and I'm betting it was because a different company printed that booklet. Mix-ups happen all the time in the printing industry, especially in the 1980s. The 20th was NOT based on the XR7. It was an LS with the proper option package. This is taken straight from the Ford ordering literature. 5.0willgo, all myliterature shows that all years med canyon red is clearcoat metallic and that the only "regular" one is Bright Canyon Red. Which is yours?

As far as i know the 20th anniversary's had XR-7 Suspension.

I have paint code 2M, Medium Canyon Red Metallic. Eric has that listed as not being clearcoat on his site(unless he mistakenly mismarked it)
Maybe I'm wrong.
Unfortunately it isn't as simple as looking over the car for traces of clear since it was resprayed black :(

*EDIT - I found some color chip pages online and sure enough, they show it is clear coated. It's interesting that some '86 Mustangs the same color aren't clearcoated.

Michael, I added the door tag info of my TC and the other Tbird.
I'm curious what the top right numbers designate..F0084-R0032 for the TC, and F0076-R0083 for the V6 car.

Unfortunately it isn't as simple as looking over the car for traces of clear since it was resprayed black

*EDIT - I found some color chip pages online and sure enough, they show it is clear coated. It's interesting that some '86 Mustangs the same color aren't clearcoated.

Welcome to the wonderful world of trying to track down even the simplest bits of information about these cars. ;)

For simplicity, from 1984 on, all metallics were marked as basecoat/clearcoat.

And I would love for that to be the definitive statement.

But this is Ford, and these were 1980's cars with poor documentation, so anything can be correct. However, it's been my experience that that's generally the case: base/clear for metallics, and acrylic enamel for solid colors. Generally. There are some exceptions to the rule, such as black base/clear that Ric has on his '85 (special order/snuck through), and I know that Nick has on his '87 XR7 (presumably because it was an XR7). I've yet to see a base/clear Oxford White but it was possible. Same with the Scarlet and Canyon Reds.

It's also possible that some colors that started the model year as acrylic enamel was later changed to base/clear. Running changes did happen.

What's on my site is published information from the literature. Being that the literature is only about 75% accurate, though, it's possible that the interior/paint books have updated info. I'll double check that. One of these days LOL.

It was repainted the original color. I could have changed it at the time as I had the jams and the underside of the hood and trunk done at the same time. I liked the silver though.

That's why the 3.55 TC 8.8" is sitting on jack stands waiting to go in :D Just gotta fix the wheel bearing/axle shaft/differential pin problems and it's good to go. Funny that it would have 2.73 gears with the 10" drums and sway bar though...

Gray paint unsure of the code can't read the tag on the door frame. I do kow that the name is blue somthing. I even matched it up to a paint chip from 84 and it was blue something that matched inside the door frame no sun fade in that spot.

Ok uh...I just wrote down every single number shown on the door tag (where my VIN is) and this isnt matching up. My interior color should show a BL somewhere, but nowhere in my numbers is there such a string (this car has never been tampered with). I dont even know where to start.

As for the paint code, I'll check again on the tag. And all you had to do was look at my cardomain to see my Interior color and type :P . Shadow Blue cloth. Good thing because I'm not a fan of leather interiors.

I thought my car was pretty loaded (just without leather and moonroof, which I can do without), but it seems that there are tons of other options (like DUAL power seats opposed to my single power seat). Maybe I have most of them, but I'll have to see.

Added you, and I do believe you have the only factory leather consolette car I've ever seen.

I actually saw a black 88 LX at the wreakers once with smoke gray leather and a consolette. So I know there was at least one more T-bird with a consolette and leather from the factory.

Now that I know it's rare maybe I should have kept the consolette instead of installing the console when I had my seats re-upholstered:hick:

That pic has a little photo trickery.:D I took the pic a little before sunset, so with the sun being low it gives it that bronze-ish look. It's actually Brite Red hi solid clear, code 26. Basically burgundy red.

Mike: I updated some, and added a few more birds. I have most of the buck tags (radiator tags) but I'm trying to find a break down of the codes so I can figure out how I'm gonna post them. I'm not sure if where they are on the tag affects the decifering.

So the most popular exterior color is medium red clearcoat and the most popular interior color is scarlet red. Hmmm you guys like red. I wonder (we'll probably never find out) what the most popular color combo on theses cars was. On the other hand I've only seen one other silver metallic/smoke gray metallic tue-tone 88 T-bird. It was a V6 LX on ebay a year ago. It had 65,000 miles on it and looked to be in good shape. I should have bought it and had twins :D

2. Red is the most popular so blah!
3. Silver is 2nd popular and grey is the 2nd interior. Your car probably isn't all that rare. You have to have a really bizarre color or leather/moonroof/vent windows to be rare.
4. You've got a 351 and Rodlite's, who cares about rare? Go fast!

Also, 88sportcoupe has been added, except for paint color (I have no idea what color 1C is). Where's the updates from the three ^^^^ mentioned earlier? Where's everybody else?

Sounds like the '87 Sport I junked that had Smoke(gray) paint, with gray interior... Still have the 7.5 TL around here some place, trashed the 2.73 gears...

Wiring, engine brackets, AC compressor, shifter, drive shaft, etc are in my TC...

FILA - On your Cougar we need the actual paint color(s) and code, and an actual options list. An actual list of the options on your FILA would be nice too, though I guessed some by your pics.

To throw a curve in the sport seat/console debate I don't think you had to get sport seats to get a console on Cougars. I pulled my console from an 87 Cougar LS. It had the base seats, power door locks, windows, power driver's seat, and black over metallic smoke gray tue-tone paint. Those were the only options. It even had column shift.

PLEASe, please, please post up a pic of the car, and the doorjamb (or wherever the color is still good), and the door tag (I know it's unreadable, but let us have a shot!). I'm really interested in getting to the bottom of your car!

From what I got on the RAdiator tag the paint code is 1Y. The computer at work calls it Drak charcoal. I remember the old pages of the paint book had a different name for it. I'll see what I can do about the pics it is raining today.

That's Dark Charcoal, Medium Red (hood), Black (header panel and passenger fender), and primer. :hick:

I definately see the blue tint in the Dark Charcoal, that's an awesome color! If you ever paint it, leave it Dark Charcoal (unless you "Sleeper" Black first :P )

Gonna go back to the stock color as soon as I get the 94 cougar on the road. The 94 is gonna be DD duty. The 84 is gonna get the body and interior restored to facotry or better. It has leather seats. dirver power. Both have the lumbar hand operated pumps. And the front leg pullouts. Also I dig the keyless entry way back in 84 that has got to be rare.

The paint code isnt on the same line as the body code and the other codes. It is actually above the body code.

well they're deleted b/c when i had to replace the front of my car i couldnt find the trim or the bulb to go in the holes. so i just went and got non turning lamp trim... i might go back to turning lamps after i find the trim and lights that go in the spot.

now for the codes. paint is R1, i think the int color code was 21? lemme go look at the thread that has the breakdown.

i couldnt get a good enough picture but i swear thats exactly where you said the paint code would be and thats what it said. when i tried to get a shot of it, my cam is so old (1mp) its just fuzzy, and even trying to read it is difficult. like the 21 im not sure if thats 2I or zi Z1 etc. but the R1 or RL was pretty clear.

So where is the master list at? Also is there some sort of comparison to the factory porduction numbers so we could find out how rare our car/cars are? I would really like to be able to have the info where we could break down and just see how rare some of these cars are. I know I can't be the only one to wonder how rare there cars is. Just think about its options, and some of the odd ball that ford did here and there some of us might have a one of a very low number. That would be killer to find that out. Anyone else want to know this? I think aerobird is doing a great job. If I can help let me know. I was thinking if we had the raw data that maybe we could put it into a easy to read format. Break it down as far as we can to get how many of what cars were made with what options(pw.ps.pl.pw,pm,tilt,cruise,keyless entry),colors,wheels, style(T/C,Sport,Elan), and anything else we could pile on the list to make it the most acurate this is how many of this or that were made.

Dunno if you want to count a car that no longer exists, but I found the VIN to the TC I dismantled:

Those base door panels and seats are normal in an '87 Sport.

Just a thing to add about that parts TC, that you made me think about in your thread about the Sport - my TC did not have the systems sentry panel. It had a blank panel with just the cig lighter, just like your Sport. I'm using it in my car to replace the home made panel I had installed when I first did the console swap.

As for that Luxury Light Group - it must have been available a-la-carte, as my '88 has the hood light (still works!) and the dual-beam dome light (I thought all Fords from about 1972-1990 used that same dome light, the big chrome one with ugly white lens and two "fisheyes"), but it had plain visors (no lights, no mirrors, no nuthin') and doesn't have the rear lights, I/P courtesy lights (I assume you mean the ones that light your feet up) or illuminated entry. Of course, thanks to the parts TC it has all of that now, except illuminated entry

Holy cow...somebody had some time to kill tonight. ;)

Well, while this g match was going on, I updated the 1984 Cougar color page: http://www.coolcats.net/fox/1984colors.html

It now reflects ALL correct interior color codes and materials, the correct factory vinyl top colors, the correct pinstriping color codes, and what interior colors were available with what exterior colors. So now someone has a base upon which to start the correct combinations for 1984 Cougars (and probably almost all '84 T-Birds). I'll have the 1985-86 colors done within the next few weeks. Possibly the '83 colors also.

Of interesting note: it was possible to have a 1984 Dark Academy Blue Metallic Clearcoat Cougar with a Canyon Red interior. Why? I would love to know myself. Again, this was Ford, in 1984. Who the hell knows. ;)

Anyway...I'm pretty tired of reading these verbal volleys here so I suggest we keep two separate databases for the time being. Everyone seems to be happy enough with both. We'll all contribute to both, where possible...it's not that difficult to copy and paste info. No big deal from where I sit.

Some idiot wrecked it and got a replacement hood, trunk, and front and rear bumpers from a white base Bird. He then painted the roof spray can white.

He does need a 2.3T for it. It came with the original non-WC T5 trans though.

I may have missed this, but how do you decode the radiator tags Mike? I know and understand the Vin and door coded but not the Tags. I'm in touch with another Fila guy and I wana see if there is some "code" or something that keeps them alike.

We don't know yet. That's kind of one of the points of this thread. Maybe Eric and Brent and look over all the radiator tags posted so far and give some insight.
