Title: Help!! falls on face at 10psi
Post by: turbo86xr7 on February 18, 2007, 06:53:27 PM
I have an 86 cougar xr7 turbo with an automatic. I had a problem with it not starting. after swapping tfi and coil I found that i had a broken wire leading to the coil. After i got that taken care of I added a BOV. I was going to hook up the fmic that i mounted but didnt have enough pipe. So i get it together and take it for a spin and it gets to about 10 psi and falls on its face and stops pulling and engine rpms dont climb it justs stays at about 3000 rpm. If i slowly roll into the throttle it will go all the way to 5000 rpm if it doesnt build boost. I pluged off the line to the waste gate and disconnected the bcs i need help please:punchballs:

Your BOV may be opening under boost....

I thought about that but i dont think so! cause when i let off you can hear a whoosh . I talked to my buddy and he siad maybe the vam or the fuel pressure regulator went bad! I need some more ideas

Well of course it's going to "whoosh" if it's releasing 10# of  pressure...

What do you mean you "plugged off the line the waste gate"?

i thought maybe the waste gate was opening to soon or something so disconnected it and plugged the line. I also removed thye lines to the bcs and plugged them too.

Well that was silly.....if the WGA is not hooked up all it will do is not regulate boost...

How about checking the BOV....is there any adjustment to it?

i adjusted it in and out. If the wastegate is not hooked  up the turbo should make max boost correct?

It will make nothing but boost until something gives.

Take the BOV off and get things running properly first.

You could have a VAM issue....could be dirty, sticking, etc.

The turbo inlet hose could be sucking closed under boost.

Can you clean the VAM and how do you do it.?

ive always used brake cleaner to clean the vam out

Like chuck said remove the bov and see what it does. Also do not trust the stock gauge (if equipped) mine was 7-8 psi off at 10 psi .

even if the gauge was wrong it still doesnt explain why it falls on its face and engine wont rev and stays at 3000 rpm under booost at full throtle

Actually it possibly could if you are making 30+ psi and your gauge shows 10.

Do you have access to a code reader? maybe a trip to your local autozone and let them scan the codes. The problem you are having has so many variables to the cause. And even though fords diagnostics are poor it may give you a clue.

(My latest episode was a bad vam that caused a bad stumble/pop/pop underboost no rpm gain issue)but ive seen CTS/TPS/VAM/BAP/O2 cause the same issues

Well you've been given a couple things to look at.

Last one...first plug the WGA back up.  At the very least run a hose from the turbo compressor housing to the WGA.  Unplug the knock sensor.  It's possible the KS is pulling timing as well..thus making it feel like it falls on its face.  DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU RECONNECT THE WASTEGATE.

Other than that check the things that have already been pointed out and get it running right without the BOV first.

i have a autometer boost gauge hooked up. It just starts to pull under boost and then falls down. I dont see how timing would do that. it should still rev past 3000 rpm. Without getting into the boost it will erv way past 3000:punchballs:

The knock sensor will pull timing and the car will miss and fall down if it's excessive enough.  It will ease into it and be fine if you don't get into boost.

Since you obviously don't want to listen to any advice, I'm done...I have other things to do.....

What is your plug gap?

It is not that i dont want to listen to your advice i just want as many ideas as possible when i attack this thing.

Quit fishing for ideas and actually try some of his advice, chuck knows his stuff.

Also check your fuel pressure.

Plug wires and plugs are were I would start.Use only factory style plugs, turbo's dont like platinum plugs. I had a problem with my car cutting out when it got warm,I was told tfi, map, ect but no fix. The only thing that fixed it was a simple plugs, wires. Did I say "plugs n wires."

Chuck is right - you need to have the wastegate hooked up. You'll blow something up, otherwise.
When I first got my '86, it would start choking and shaking under WOT past 3k RPM, just as yours does. I did a full tune-up with Motorcraft parts and it changed everything. The car ran MUCH better after the tune-up.

Are you hearing a whooshing sound WHILE it's building boost, i.e. when it gets near 10 psi? Could be that boost is blowing out around one of your couplers, but it's not enough to actually blow the coupler off. I've had that happen a few times when I didn't tighten the clamps enough, it'd start to leak around the coupler once I got up near 10 psi or so.

Chuck was right. the intake hose was sucking shut. the last thing i checked:bowdown:

The stock hoses have a wire in them to keep from collapsing.

What did you do to rectify it?
