Question: what cars the best: thunderbird / cougar / mark VII

What type of transmission does a 84 mercury cougar w/ a 3.8L V6 Tfi have? whenever i floor my car while in the drive gear from the speed of 20 to about 40-45 it makes a grinding sound until i let off of the gas. what is the problem and what could be needing fixing from this question?:cougarsmily:

Your transmission is either C5 (three speed ) or AOD (four speed with overdrive).
P-R-N-D-2-1  C5 selector.
P-R-N-D-D-1  AOD selector.
 Don't know what your problem is.

Could you amplify on your symptoms? If its a AOD you only have this problem in Drive or in Overdrive too? What's the transmission fluid like?

Could have a gearset failure. Get a high contrast towel, white will do, wipe the dipstick onto the towel. Any contamination? Smell burnt?

i dont have overdrive and the sound is coming for the front of transmission. my transmission is a c3 i know.
