Title: started cleaning up the engine bay
Post by: 32VFoxBird on February 16, 2007, 09:43:00 AM
i know it isnt much, but its a start. im not much of a body guy, so im sure im doing things the hard way. i still have a lot more holes to fill, get it all back smooth, and re-primer it all. for all the large holes im welding in sheet metal. tell me what you guys think.

Im dreading all that work that i have to do to my stang. Motor is coming out, getting painted, and at that point in doing the frame, anything i can get out underneath the car, and the engine bay. All outside, on a driveway. fun fun fun, at least i have a shed for the motor.

if your gonna polish the intake id polish the covers. What color is the block and heads being painted?
Title: started cleaning up the engine bay
Post by: 32VFoxBird on February 27, 2007, 09:06:48 PM
the heads and block are aluminum, so they wont be painted. the front cover will probably be satin aluminum.

got to keep going with the steps it looks rough still you need to step it to like 1500 2000 and then really fine. a buffing wheel with some polish/compound will help. a dremle wo do the hard parts. and it could be realy polished. good luck

i havent been happy with it, since i took that pic. ive gone over it about 4 times now, and still cant get everything smooth like i want it.

i start with p120, then p220, then p320, then p800, then p2000, then i use mother's polish to shine it up.

yeah baby! yeah, the ford gt covers are baby blue wrinckle. mine will be PC when i get into the motor. either that or body color. id just have the ones you have powder coated that, or black wrinckle personally. silvers alright. i want the polished "ford raceing" coil covers but they are a tough pricey to pull the triger on those....that carb setup is gonna stick a good 2" - 3" out the hood, whats the plan?

yes, its from a 95 mustang. i also got the center console. the dash is gutted. no wiring or ducting for AC. its going to be a big job, but ive been researching it for awhile. ill also need to swap in the steering column, and that requires welding on a bearing plate for the steering shaft to pass through.

Title: started cleaning up the engine bay
Post by: baxo on April 12, 2007, 10:21:52 AM
I have the stang door panels too. width wise they fit, i think the bottom will have to be cut a bit short though. And the biggest challenge with that will be to move the door handle.

Nothing wrong with an '84 dash...it's nice and symmetrical, very fitting for the car. It's just under-gauged. ;)

I'm seeing a little bit of a competition going on here...kudos to both of you. Hopefully one will inspire the other, overcoming the obstacles along the way, and figuring all this stuff out. It's not an easy task by any stretch.

My gauges will be custom so no, the stang guages will be out. heater controls stay.. radio.. well installing a factory radio (cougar or stang) after having the interior out completely again would just be insanity :)

Anyways i'm not the originator of this thread, nor will i speak further of my plans.. I've already said too much ;)

Then buy a later car.  I prefer the earlier dashes over the later ones.  Stock gauges suck anyways....so you can always add what you need.

Personally I was never a fan of the SN-95 dash, even in the Mustang.  Props for undertaking the project though.
Title: started cleaning up the engine bay
Post by: kingcars on April 12, 2007, 02:44:19 PM
I think the dash looks pretty cool actually.  It's too much work for me, though, because the stock dash doesnt bother me at all and I dont feel a need to change it any time soon.  My Tbird will be bookin at least 350hp before it sees a new dash...thats a loooong way off :D.  Anyways, nice work guys!
Title: started cleaning up the engine bay
Post by: baxo on April 12, 2007, 02:51:34 PM
The reason why I did it, is it's a convertible. the inside counts just as much as the outside. So i had 2 choices, paint the old dash (which has been done before *Ahem ERIC ahem* or go for a completely different look. and I can't beat the deal i got on the mustang interior. So, mustang wins.
Title: started cleaning up the engine bay
Post by: kingcars on April 12, 2007, 02:56:16 PM
Yeah...I also dont have the luxury of a daily driver other than the Tbird, so I can't really embark on any long term projects just yet.  I'm doing what I can, though :) .  I cant wait to see both interiors finished and clean, though!

QFT...

Lol but interesting none the less.  I don't think I really had any problems with the dash in my 87.  I'd have liked an buttstuffog cluster, but meh.  I'd really savvy something like Eric's, but knowing me, I'd be waaay to lazy to embark in that bowl of spaghetti.

i wasnt going to use the sn 95 door pannels. it looked as if the stock tbird ones would have worked nicely with the sn 95 dash. way better than the guys in fox stangs trying to keep the stock door pannels. the sn95 door pannels are a ton of work to make fit right i guess. plus out door handles are in different spots. realy looking foward to finnished pics on this!

Towards the end of last year, I read about a 83' Cobra that a guy put the entire running gear and interior out of a 03' Cobra into it. They grafted part of the firewall into the 83' to make the installation of the A/C\heater suitcase easier. They made custom door panels and said that was a real pain in the butt. That gave me the idea of putting the sn95 dash into my car as well.......Darn it!!!!! You guys beat me to that!! :shoothead Oh well, so be it then, I'll just be know as another copybird, I mean copycat. Now just to sneak that one past the finance manager. :D

the pre 01 center console puts the cup holders too close to the shifter for one. it freakin drove me nuts when shifting. the 01-04 center consolemoves the cup holdders back, moves the second 12 source into the storage bin (not sure if thats actually better but whatever), deletes the stupid useless "coing holder" (sort of, i moved my foglight switch to that position), and adds a leather boot for the e-brake lever. upr makes some nice inserts for the cupholders for the later console as well. not sure bout the earlier ones. i think the storage bin was a touch bigger but im not sure. its been awhile since i swapped.

as far as the door pannels, i thought the tbird door handles would clear the dash and function well with the sn95 dash. the fox mustang guys have a problem with the fox door handles intersecting the sn95 dash because they are up so far. the birds/cougars handles are further back. props to you if you can make the sn95 door pannels work and all the ac stuff work.

It makes me hate my 84 dash so much more now

I like my 84 dash. Ive driven SN-95 Mustangs. Not a big fan of the dash. I dont mind a dash being more focused on the driver as in angle of things, but I like my stock dash just fine. Mine is mint too haha with an aftermarket dash pad on it since 89 muwahaha.

here's a pic of the stock panel dyed to match the dash. let me know what you think.

i still need to touch up a few areas and get a replacement carpet patch for the bottom. doesnt look to bad if you ask me.

The door panel matches suprisingly well. That's going to look trick!

How's the dash holding up? And all of the little pieces? Broken many clips? Have any rattles yet? I ask becuase every SN95 I've driven/ridden in (including test driving a new Mach 1) rattled like crazy!

I'm going to do some door panel work. How hard do you think it would be to replace the carpet on the panel making it conform to the shape. My panels are like yours.I had bought some grey TC panels, but actually,I don't like them. You did some very nice work so far. Thanks for the motivation.

cool, they do look decent. thats awesome! congrats... they work as well as i thought they would so im stoked for ya. my plan was to cut back where the map pocket was, build an enclosure for a 6.9 so it was tight to the door, but tilted up and back then carpeted again to match.

the sn95 stang door pannels (like baxo is finding out) are a royal pain in the jock. they mount entirely different. i wasnt going to get into that. they sure will be sick in there though.

mine is tight and makes 0 rattles or squeeks. the only weird interior noise i get is from the shaker gasket wiggling the hood.

But the Mustang dash is so, well, plasticky, for lack of a better term. The design is cool, but if I had to touch it on a daily basis *shudder*.

Now don't everyone get mad at me for saying this, but isn't our Bird dashes "Plasticky" also?? I know my center console sure is. I was going to pull it out....toss it.... custom make one that I like. Then again, I don't really want to do that either.
I like the way the stang dash flows and how the console flows with it. And besides......they look killer in our cars

YaaaaHoooooo!! Got the approval from the finance manager!! She says that she likes the stang dash better than the original. So If anyone wants or need a good dash let me know. PM or email me.

Dont forget to replace your heater core while the dash is out, you'll thank yourself later!

Point, our consoles are pretty bad. Not as bad as MN12 Bird's though! :hick: Our door panels are a LOT nicer, but you can keep those and have the Stang dash :D I have a question though, doesn't the passenger side glovebox area say "Mustang"?

And I went for lookey-see at the neighbors '01 and I remembered what rattled, all of the pieces around the shifter. He velcro'd his :hick:

not real sure. i need to get some money together, to have my heads "cleaned up". i was planning on painting the outside after i have the drivetrain in, but i may paint it before then. id like to get front and rear fiberglass bumper covers, and shave the "moldings" off for a smooth look all around.

another little update...

i finally got a steering column, shaft, and wheel. turns out the guy sent me the wrong key with the lock cylinder. so i figured i would replace it with a new one. turns out, you need the "correct" key to get the cylinder out. so i beat the ever loving shiznit out of it, till it popped out. then i go to oreilly's and buy a new assy for $15. come back and it slid right in.

later i was thinking if my t-bird cylinder would work, and after my son's ballgame, i gave it a try. and it worked! saves me from having to deal a bunch of keys now, and im going to take the new cylinder back for a refund. :D

oh, and the sn95 steering shaft will mate to the fox rack, if you use the fox steering knuckle on the sn95 shaft. the fox rack has splines, whereas the sn95 rack is more of a hex shape. i never could find any  detailed info on the column swap into a fox.

a little update:

i got the heads over to the shop last week. i should have them back next week, and then the motor will be assembled.

i did get another step of the dash swap finished. i had to cut out a piece of the firewall from a sn95 mustang to use the sn95 steering column. i got the fox knuckle bolted onto the sn95 shaft, also.

after 3.5hrs, i finally got the 4r70w in! i had to pull it back out, due to the converter not being engaged all the way. in the process it slipped off the jack. luckily my hand broke its fall. (would want to hurt my fresh trans) i am going to need to move my crossmember back about an inch now. it rubs the pan, and the the mount wont line up with the slots. its at the height it needs to be though. the oilpan now clears the rack by about 1/16"! i may switch to manual rack for extra clearance, since im using stock motor mounts. ill mess with the trans x-member once i get my bottle filled for my welder.

well, i decided to move the motor up into the front holes on the k-member. having the motor against the firewall wasnt worth the trouble of modifying everything to make it work. now everything clears and bolts up fine so far.

1st pic is when the motor was in the front slots of the k-member. 2nd pic is with it in the rear slots. i gained around 1.5" of clearance moving the motor.

1/2" longer according to the ford racing catalog.

EDIT: that's compared to a 03 cobra motor which uses 2 belts. my motor measures 23-3/8" from back of block to the face of the water pump .

i got the trans installed after locating some flexplate bolts. i had a friend come by and give me a hand. it only took about 20min to the 200lbs trans bolted in.

i ran into another snag on the oil pan. i bought a new pan for a 4.6 mustang, and when we were turning the motor over to get the converter nuts on, the motor would get in a bind. turns out one of the crank counterweights was rubbing the ser in the pan. so we had to lift it back up, drop the oil pan, and smooshed the sers down so the crank would clear. ill seems fine now.

im actually going to try to get it to start today, if i can get a fuel pump, and the ignition controller wired.

well, after many attempts, it wont run. i had  it start briefly, but then died. i hooked my laptop up to it, to see if it would tell anything, and it came with "cam sensor fail, coil 1 input, coil 3", and some other BS. im not sure if i was getting a 12v to the controller. i have the ignition on a 35a lighted toggle switch, and when i crank it over, the light on the switch will "blink". like its getting drained. i found my old starter solenoid, and im gonna see if having that wired in will fix any kind of power drain.

i also forgot to plug the cooler lines, so i had about 5 qts of tranny fluid blown all over my driveway. :shakehead

My memory of this info on these motors is vauge at best, But I belive there is "issues" with moving them from one car to another. A wireing issue that will (is intended to) stop them from running to make them useless or at least a pain in the ass for chop shops to steal them.

If you are aware of what I'm talking about then never mind.

If you have never heard of such a thing then I'm pretty sure where I read it was someplace on Sergio's site http://www.cobra4me.com/
when he was building his Super Cobra he came accrost it...

wtf, I went and found what I was talking about anyway.. (wasent going to bother if you were already aware)

This page
http://www.cobra4me.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=95

10th Message down..
" I wanted to make the engine run before I pull it, but the Passive Anti Theft System is denying me the pleasure, it seems that the mangled driver's door that I already threw in the trash had a module needed for the system to recognize the key, so there's no fuel and probably no spark for the engine to fire...it cranks and turns but won't start, so if I remove the components now and get rid of most of the wiring and unnecessary systems I think it will run ok.
"
THAT's what I'm taking about, and about all I know about it is that it exsist... Have you looked into this?

Sergio get's arround it and I'm sure you will also if you havent already, or even if it exisist on your perticular setup.

Just wanted to mention it.

there appears to be a problem with the motor. its most likely a bent valve, but may be rings. 2 of the cylinders show low compression on my tester, but im going to do a leak down test later today. in other words, im not happy at all. im at least going to have to pull a head off.

ive talked with the guy i bought the motor from, and he seems willing to help me out. i dont know exactly how far, but he wants to know the results of the leak down test.

Yeah you'll NEED that a sump. The engine in my 88 will stall under full throttle with less than 3/4 of a tank because the gas sloshes away from the fuel pump pick up. Your engine would probably be even better than mine at doing that with a stock tank :hick:

i also have another small update:

i sold me intake and carb........

carb was too big(from what several have told me), and wanted an intake with the water x-over. so i was able to order this the other day:

and i plan on buying a 650 for cheap, and putting a kit in it myself. i also found a trick way to install AN fittings on your hose without cutting the shiznit out of your hands, arms, face, etc. :D

for the polished look, the intake had to be sanded down to at least 320grit. so i took it too a chrome plating shop and had them do it. they did a good job. the exterior feels like glass.

now i need to get it to the other place for coating. i may go today, if my back stops hurting.

ok, so the dash height question still stands but also wondering how heavy that complete motor is...?

im not sure on the height of the dash. the motor weighs roughly 550lbs.

I'm really just looking for more of a feel, not a measurement.  For example, how will it be sitting in the seat and driving?  It appears a bit higher, think it'll be wierd to look over?

This might help. Here is a picture comparison from about the same distance and angle. It doesn't look like it's much different height wise.

yeah, that does help.  It looks a bit higher where the dash arches up, but not much, huh?  1-2" maybe?

The angles aren't exactly the same but it appears to be no more than an inch or two different if it is at all.

if you draw a line with your eye tangent to the top of the highest point of the dash and over to the mirror trim plate, they look nearly the same height to me.

So, why the talk in earlier posts about no A/C making the dash install easier?

because you have to trim about 3" off the back of it to make the dash fit flush to the windshield. along with tpuppies the steel supports to clear the a-pillars. it is no way a "bolt-in". if you are thinking about doing the swap, i would do a google search to see what everyone else has done to make it fit.

Oh yeah, I know it's not a bolt in!  That's what makes it fun!  I'm just wondering what tpuppies the dash has to do with the a/c.  I started a thread in the interior forum about an sn95 dash swap.  Would you mind sharing your personal experience over there?

my guess is ductwork prevents AC, with that much trimmed off.

Awesome work. One word of caution, though: do yourself a favor and take a CLOSE look at the spark plug threading in the heads, especially for plug #3. There have been reports that many of those engines don't have enough thread for the plugs and they sometimes spit the plugs out. An ounce of prevention and all that...

actually i was thinking of using the center section from the mach 1 hood, and glassing it onto a stock replacement fiberglass hood with the mach scoop. :D

That works even better than I expected.  The body lines match up pretty closely.  It will look great and function well as a bonus.

Are you going to raise up the back of it? I forgot that you had all that stuff. Looks good. totally original. Even if you didnt raise the back up i think it might look ok. Are you going to make a tray for the bottom of the scoop to mount on tha carb? Are you cutting out all of the hood that will be covered by the Mach section?

so many questions!

yes, ill make a bracket for the scoop. yes, ill be cutting a large section out of the hood. and ill have the hood look as close to a original mach as possible. the height of the scoop is going to determine how high the hood is going to be.

Sorry but I think I might be more excited than you to see it finish! I always wanted to make a cowl hood out of a 96-98 (cant remember what year it was) cobra R hood. I like the way it looks like it steps up twice. I guess now that i look at it more you could trim the front to make it a shorter height after leveling the rear too.

BTW, your interior looks tits, man!

Thanks!  Couldn't have done it without your parts (but the pedals were a nightmare, lol), not to mention the all important inspiration!  I had forgotten all about the SN dash swap for the last few years and this thread is actually what got me going.  Gonna start toying with those door panels next.

Anyway, good luck with that hood!  I can't wait to see a shaker on that 'bird.  Gonna be so dope!

another update!

i redid all the brake lines, except the ones that run along the rear axle. those were redone a couple years back. its all 3/16" tubing with a mix of 45* tube nuts and 37* AN fittings. :hick:

one of the pics shows where i had to drill a hole in the strut tower, just so one of the lines could screw onto the MC.

Fake Shaker :shakehead:

Functional Shaker :headbang:

Please do me one favor so that I don't have nightmares.  Put either some hose (fuel line or vacuum) over those lines where they pass through metal, or add some grommets.

Lookin' good.

i spent a good 2 hours getting the length of these hoses cut, so i could get them screwed on. i havent messed with braided hoses in awhile, but ill say this. Jeg's brand hose ends are the EASIEST to work with. i had absolute hell with one XRP fitting.
