I've got a set of wheels I want to do up in a satin black. The budget isn't going to allow for stripping/powdercoating, so I'm just going to clean/scuff/paint them.
I suppose the "std" Krylon or Rustoleum stuff would be ok. I've had real good luck with the high temp (500*) engine paint and thought about using that instead. I was going to then bake them afterwards.
Thoughts?
Dupli-Color Wheel Paint is THE bomb. $5.99/can, comes in about 8 different colors (white, argent, gunmetal, matte black, gloss black, bronze, and dark argent). Resistant to brake dust, looks GREAT. I restored some Magnum 500's with it and I have some Bronze for the GTO and some Gunmetal for Layla if it ever stops freaking raining!
Who carries that?
WalMart, NAPA, CSK, Summit, and direct from Dupli-Color.

Autozone and Advance both also carry that stuff...
Been thinking about trying out some of that myself. Would like to paint up my wheels with graphite.
Looks like I'll have to give the satin black a try.
Agreed, used it to paint my ponies and it works awesome.
Chuck, I use engine paint on just about every part on my car. I've had good luck with that stuff.
Alan
the dulicolor paint works great, also works good on carbs.
That 1200 degree engine paint does hold up pretty good, I've painted a bunch of stuff with it...it always goes on very well and seems pretty scratch resistant for spray paint.

Those are my MN12 7-spoke wheels after using the aforementioned Dupli-Color wheel paint (argent).
I think they turned out fantastic, but I have yet to install them on the car. I'm too cheap to put tires on them. :)
For what it's worth, this particular paint was very easy to work with. As long as I shook the can often, the metal flake didn't "pool" anywhere on the wheels; it applied very smoothly and evenly.
I used the wheel paint in gunmetal on my waffle stars, and it works very well.
They better not be Tri-bars! :D
What kind of prep work did everybody do? Or did you just clean them up a bit and started spraying?
well i did motorcycle wheels, have yet to do the wheels on ym bros car. With the bike rims i used the 3m pads, forget what they are called, but it cleaned and scuffed them up good
Yuppers....Not going for the Cobra R look though (kind of hard to do with a Scorpio ;) )
I'm thinking about painting mine black with the tbird snowflake centers... but they are just slightly too big and it kinda annoys me. I would like to get rid of that pony though. You keeping yours?

Nope...I'll probably just fill and smooth.
A shot on the old car...

what are they on?? and whats a scoprio?
Reading works wonders.
Anyways, for prep, i cleaned the wheels with some brake cleaner, and sprayed them. No scrubbing, no prep, nothing.
I used Duplicolor Textured Metallic on my snowflakes, and i wiped them off with a dirty rag, and sprayed them. Snow on the ground and all. Paint still looks decent.
didn't know that was the scorpio cause ive never seen one before, cause it said on the old car. And google is no help so:dunno:

Merkur Scorpio
o its a merkur, i only knew of the xr4ti i think there called. Sure is a different looking car
Well I got one done...still working on the others (cleaning, prepping, etc)
The satin black is a little more glossy than I like, but at least it's not high gloss.

That's hot. Why don't you do mine as well? :)
Uh, I don't know if you noticed, but you got some extra holes in yer wheels. :D
;) That's because the Scorpio bolt pattern is different than the SN-95.
It looks like it will take a full can (and maybe a touch more) per wheel if you do all of it.
This paint is not as satin as I would have liked, but at least it's not full glossy.
;)If the weather holds *pleads* I'll do mine this weekend.
I'm halfway done w/ mine. Need to get the other two prepped and sprayed.
I thought I would be slick and sneak out of here during my lunch break, but I just got a load of work dumped on my desk. This sucks, it's 70 degrees out too. :(
I love daylight savings... my fiance did the one on the left... or right. I forget.

What did you use to paint them?
I need to fill that stupid horsey on my center caps before I use them.
looks good
I wanted to fill mine in too, but I don't have those skills nor the time.
I used this (http://"http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=VHT%2DSP187&N=700+115&autoview=sku") paint. Worked pretty good. The nozzle sucked though. Really hard to press down. I think it's been on the shelf for a while. Whenever I would switch over to the Engine Paint can (for my exhaust) I would throw down a mess of paint.
with the horse can't you just bondo it?
The caps flex when you put them on and take them off, and bondo doesnt flex.
The caps (or at least these) don't flex that much if at all in the center. The tabs do most of the flexing.
then maybe like a plastic filler?
Well I got them done....

The paint works out pretty well.
The guy who mounted them did not even scratch them....I'm very impressed.
what are you running for tires?
The fronts are 235/45 and the rears are 245/45.
The tire are Falken
:D You just like copying me. Get your own style C-dub!
Those were the sizes I used previously...
Besides.....mine aren't mounted on a TBird or Cougar ;)
i have a set of rims that i would like to paint they are chrome with black inserts i would like to have the chrome part painted red and keep the black inserts as the theme of my bird is black/with red accent i am looking to find someone who powder coats but no luck yet if i have to paint the rims how do i prep the the chrome any help as always is greatly welcomed
How's your paint holding up Chuck? Mine is starting to chip around the rim. Pun unintended.
