I belive that the stang door handles are black plastic. But they will work. I'd try to find another set from a bird/cougar though. They sell them new from Yearone in teh mustang catalog for about $20/set I think.

The 87-93 are plastic....79-86 metal.

Not sure if they interchange though...

According to coolcats, they do
Quote
Coolcats:
Door Handles and Locks All Fox cars with chrome metal handles, plus Escort/Lynx 2-door pre-1990; Tempo/Topaz 2-door all
**1987-93 Mustangs use flimsy plastic handles and should be avoided if possible; 1979-86 are metal.

Ive bought the aftermarket handles before.  The fitment isnt all that great and I had linkage problems.  If I ever need to do it again Im going with oem Ford pieces.

No worries.I hope to go back to that 40 acre salvage yard next Wednesday.I deed a few parts to modify for Pheonix.I have some cool stuff to do,but I want to make sure I  have extra parts in case the projects don't work how I hope.Plus,I've got to get some red interior parts to get for a member to do some trading.

1983-88 Cougars and T-Birds have the identical door handles as 1979-86 Mustangs.

What's different between the '79-'86  and the '87-'93 Stangs to make the door handles different?

Older ones are the chrome? metal ones and the newer are black plastic.

Black and chrome were just variants...same basic body.

1987-93 Mustang handles were plastic and are pr0ne to breaking, especially on cold mornings. I can't tell you how many times that's happened to my Mustang buddies' cars. The permanent solution is to replace them with the older metal-style handles.

You can get the replacments at the part store. I know we can get them in black. I know if I look them up in the computer the ask chrome or black. Also in the mid 80's ford made a switch from metal to plastic in alot of door handles. I've ordered many of the ford truck metal ones for the older truck because the newer plastic ones break all the time. Also once again look at other cars in the junkyard. Look at the handles on a tempo. They are metal and most of them are black in the newer years.

I appreciate your response ipsd.I want the Mustang ones if they'll fit right because they have some great deals on E-bay.I called Ford about the Thunderbird handles, and they're not cheap at all.I may go to the boneyard sometime and pull a handle from a Stang and compare them.I have a set of Mark VII handles, but they're not black. They do look nice.I like the chrome and brushed look with the ridge across the middle.Classy.Oh well, the definitive answer has to be out there somewhere.

Maxzone.com has pictures and rockauto.com has prices. Rock autos data base doesn't list a part for many years 1985 Mustang lists a part # and price. This is a after market part and it is black plastic.

F01311113 RH $9.04
F01310113 LH $10.08

On the other hand digging a little deeper I found this part # and price.

F01311101 doorhandle 20.79

price probably varies with quality.

For now,if the Mustang handles will work,I'd rather have them, because I can get them a lot cheaper. With the interior swap, paint, exhaust from the muflers back, heavily modified exhaust tips, and a few other things,I need to keep costs down.I can get two black metal handles for a Stang for $23.00 shipped.Or,over $20.00 each at Autozone for a Thunderbird. That's why I want to know if,for sure, the Stang handles will fit.
