Title: ?? About steering rack
Post by: Kitz Kat on February 13, 2007, 10:15:11 AM
I'm lookin to get a rebuilt steering rack. The problem is I don't know what one without rippin it out.I have cardone #'s as followed.

22-203A W/o performance,ford gear,2pc. bushing mount.

22-203F W/o perf.,ford gear,1pc.bushing mount.

22-203T TRW gear

22-207 With performance susp.,

They list it the same way for TC's+V8 fox stangs.
Lookin in tech sect. says the pumps should be different between 20-1+15-1 but they list them all the same.
Anybody shed some light on this for me?

K, just to clarify...

22-203A and 22-203F will be the 20:1 racks. Cars from 1983-85 used the Mustang-style 1-piece bushings. 1986-88 cars used the 2-piece bushings. This is due to the K-member change in 1986.

I would guess that with all your performance parts on the car, you'd want more of a performance rack as well, so it sounds like 22-207 is the 15:1 rack for ya. The TRW rack may or may not be 15:1...it should be but someone at the parts store would have to dig into that. TRW racks are good, but the Atsco rack in the convertible right now is incredibly tight and I wouldn't hesitate getting another non-TRW rack again. And there's usually a sharp price difference between TRW racks and the others. Of course, this all depends on where you shop for them.

Technically there are small differences between pumps. In the real world...I've never noticed any difference at all.

But Chuck W will chime in here shortly to shoot down this theory. ;)

Sure, the Atsco 15:1 rack is p/n 6439 at Auto Zone. I'm showing $82.99 with a $38 core charge, searching online. There is a limited lifetime warranty on it also.

I think that's what I wound up with, from Autozone, it's locking up after not very many miles just like the old one, hard spots and sometimes overassisting and things like that.  I wasn't all that happy with the quality, the input seal wasn't even in all the way when I got mine, just check it over carefully when you get it and be prepared to use the warranty.  Then again you may not have any problems, a lot of racks probably get remanned just for bad seals, but it troubles me that I would get a valve problem again, that can be pretty dangerous.
