Title: Dash Ideas?
Post by: DVP on February 10, 2007, 10:46:07 AM
So my dash just keeps gettting worse and worse and i hate the cracks, so I was thinking.... if i take out the dash( rather pull the windshield than pull it out but got to do something) and sand down the top of it flat and fill it with bondo/ filler to make it flush again. cover the whole thing in bondo/filler then primer and paint.

Problems-
- will the bondo crack also?
- I dont want the dash to loss the texture look to it. Is there a roller or something to put the texture back in the bondo? Guess it wouldn't be that bad.

anything else i might run into?

Why don't you just buy the new dashcap for $99 and slap it on?

Mine didn't look raised. All you have to do is sand the top of the dash down. Just follow the directions and they turn out really nice.

There is a guy on ebay that sells a form fitted cap to cover the dash.  I got one for my '83 and it's pretty nice.  I would highly recommend it.  I think I gave $40 for mine.  Snaps down to the existing and adheres with a silicone based adhesive.

mine doesn't look raised either, honestly I forgot I had one on there (~6-7 years ago) till I seen this thread.

That's unavoidable with a plastic dash cover. But the overall look is very acceptable otherwise. Once it's in you practically forget it's there. On my car I trimmed the underside around the speakers so that the speaker covers can still be removed (and the same can be true of the center cover). I've seen it where people pop those covers out, put the dash cover in, and then put the covers on loosely...they're loose but they blend in better, if that's the look you want.

That slightly "raised" look sure is more presentable than a dash covered with cracks, though.

The dash cap maybe the least expensive route, but if you are up for something different....On the zcar.com site, there was a guy who used LINE-X spray on bed liner to do the cargo area of his Z.  It actually looked really good. (Z cars are notorious for ped out dashes - an intact one sells for $900, & tore up interiors.)  I know there was some discussion on doing the dash - filling in with a plastic filler and then sanding and finishing with the Line-X.  I don't know if he ever did the dash.  Just a thought out of the box.
